JUST got my first striping kit a few weeks ago. Double-Fat-Singles are on lock down, getting into the MATH, throwing fert down, lawn journaling, and of course... dominating the neighbor (who gets True Green™ monthly and mows WAYYYYY too low). Still learning of course. Thanks for all info, tips, humor and regular vids!

My new home’s lawn was looking dead when I moved in and following your advice it has completely turned around into a pretty green and nice looking lawn. Just wish some brown spots would grown in some green grass. Your advice is priceless. Mow high every week water twice a week up to an inch and have fun putting down Milorganite!!!

The LCN has really opened my eyes to proper lawn care and the difference between synthetic and organic fertiliser. I'm sold. It's been my experience that you have to throw down a lot of MILO. The bag rate just doesn't do it for my lawn, for a variety if reasons. I will aerate this fall and throw down a double dose in September and then late October if I can find it

Well done! Math!! You must get the “it’s expensive” a lot! I’ve had to do a math break down for peeps more then I enjoy... (I’m a liar... I LOVE the math!) People get caught up in the initial cost, not understating the ROI ( great investing term), cost per application, concentration of active ingredient and how many applications can be applied. When the break down comes out, MOST of the time, the professional products are cheaper in those aspects. Thanks for your cost recap of diy lawn care! Amazing stuff Allyn!

So I have a little bitty yard, but I can tell ya that 36lbs/1000sf will work (milo)! Crazy, but works. And man does it smell good! On the plus side I'm like the only guy still thriving green in SE Mich from my early June throw down. After a good stretch in the 90's on the north side of the rust belt and every bit of lawn hunger and thirst shows up real quick, and let me tell you, it's showing everywhere around here. The cost of some of this stuff (milo) pales in comparison to the cost of water requirements a homeowner needs when committing to maintaining their turf to a high level of dominance. When budgeting DO NOT forget the cost to keep your lawn well hydrated. A human can go without food for about three weeks but would typically only last three to four days without water. Your lawn is not much different.

Well.. I have a 50,000 sq.ft. Plot. Minus the house and garage foot print, and trees, then around 48,000 sq. ft. This is my 1st year of using your suggested products. It's costing me a large amount for "green" to make that green, but I'm in SC and our rain is very off and on, and watering is limited for me. So far I've spent $250 between Milo and RGS package that I got from you. But I have to tell you, it's working. Thanks,LCN

TruGreen does my neighbor's lawn across the street. I was digging out an old stump this spring when TruGreen came by to do the first app on the neighbor's lawn. One of the guys came over to give me a hard time about digging out the huge stump. One thing led to another and we got on the topic of pricing. I live in Central Wisconsin. For starters, he said they were doing an 8,000 SF app on the neighbor's land even though he thought it was closer to 12,000 or 13,000 SF just from walking it. I asked why he didn't change the app and he said it's all calculated back at the office which is computed from Google maps (or similar). Out of curiosity, I asked the gentleman for a rough price to do my lawn (even though I had zero intent to do that since I am following every one of Allyn's tips - working out terrifically btw). The guy asked me how big my lawn was - I immediately answered that it was 14,000 since I just measured it last year. He didn't believe me and gave me a price for a 10,000SF lawn and the cost was over $600 for the year. I can manage my lawn for less than $300 and I get the full applications it needs. Not to mention, my lawn looks twice as good as the neighbor's which is under TruGreen's care. Then I proceeded to put down some LCN signature double wide, double fat stripes before the TruGreen guys left.

I bought a brand new house and moved in about a month ago. Want to dominate for sure. I have 4 bags of Milo in the garage and waiting to throw it down, mowing Sundays and Wednesdays sometimes 3 times per week. Grass still growing in certain spots can't wait until a full coverage. Love it. Watching these videos and zipping my orange juice and Cointreau liquor at night its just freacking awesome. Have a Troy built tractor all the way raised up. Going nuts trying to figure out how I can raise it up bit more as the higher settings are 4 inches however think the builder had the lawn bit lower than side walk. Hate it want the grass higher. May have to throw some dirt over the winter to raise the grass nice and high next spring.. What you guys think? Or should I try to buy bigger tires?

Great video as always! Point of clarification: ROI has to include a RETURN, I.e., a profit. The ROI in this case is a question of how sweet does the lawn look for what amount of investment, or even how much does the home value increase because of the sweet lawn at what cost? That’s gonna be hard to calculate for sure. You drive a really good point here about the costs though, and guys and gals will have to figure out if their money is well spent or if they’re better off with a Frankenlawn

Great video. I do have a question though. I have approximately 1200 square foot of grass in my backyard and that is it. All the products you show in your video will treat my yard for years to come. So my question is what is the shelf life on these products. Well heat shortening the shelf life? Does cold shorten the shelf life? All this must be taken into consideration when purchasing these products and the cost of using them.

Allyn, thanks for taking the time to calculate the costs for those various treatments. Sticker Shock is real when you're a new DIY'er. IMO, you skipped one of the most important tip, which is your PreM application. Proper mowing and PreM app are going to be some of the best cultural practices a new DIY'er can do. Great job with explaining how the cost of GreenePunch isn't that much off of an app of Milo. Great looking beard sir.

Thank you LCN. I love your videos. I never EVER cared about my lawn before and I am now gearing up for a major overseed in late August. Question - Herbicide shelf life. I have a small lawn. Roughly 2000 square feet. Using your Blindside calculation - One bottle covers roughly 35,000 Square feet. If I applied Blindside two times a year - 35,000 divided by 2000 equals 17.5 Using my lawn as an example, I could use Blindside 17.5 times. Applied twice a year it would take 8.75 years to finish a bottle. Does this stuff last that long?

I wish your book had the math numbers for the Green Punch cost per 1,000, because I'm not doing a 7,000 sqft lawn. I did some quick math and it's $3.375/1000, which is slightly higher than milo, but since it's easier to measure off liquid than granular, the 2 bags is a higher "overall" cost.

Being in Western Washington, I'm having a VERY DIFFICULT time trying to find a "blog" for DIY Lawncare that fits MY NEEDS...😥 All I'm finding is, how to Get Rid Of Moss. I say, AERATE, DETHATCH, RAKE IT OUT & AMEND SOIL! We have alot of CLAY! But we also have a BUNCH of "Nasty Weeds" such as -SHOTWEED- that has been impervious to anything I have thrown at it. I "would" just pull it at Blossom, but, I have a REALLY BAD BACK, so bending down to physically pull weeds, IS OUT OF QUESTION! If you POSSIBLY have any recommendations or information to assist my lawn to be the "NEIGHBORHOOD KING", I'm all eyes & ears! Take care, -🤓 Washington State (Zone 8B)

Weed killers are nice but they are not everything. A lawn with lots of weeds and noxious grasses is endemic of other problems, primarily Ph. When we moved here 12 years ago I brought with me pleanty of plugs of st. Augustine grass from my former home in South Georgia. I also planted new azaleas, gardenias, dogwoods and similar plants that I had at my former home. After a few months I had a yard full of sticks and my st. Augustine was hanging on by its fingernails. After 10 years I only had one spot where my st. Augustine still existed and it was up next to my brick foundation. That was the time I ran a Ph test on my yard. The vial came out a deep brown. Then, I knew what the problem was -acidic soil. I started lacing my yard with dolomite lime at the highest setting on my rotary spreader. I have put close to 2,000# on my half acre since then. I guess the original Ph in my yard was under 4.0. Now, it is close to 7.0 and I have grass growing everywhere. I rolled the yard today with two bags of lime and one bag of 10-10-10. I would have rolled it with Milo but nobody has any. My st Augustine is spread in out in the back yard and I have Bermuda and fescue in the rest. I think 90% of the problems that folks have in their yards is due to a low Ph. Fescue requires a Ph of at least 6.0, Bermuda 6.5 and st. Augustine over 6.5. Centiped, the grass on most of the yards near me, requires a Ph of 4.5, minimum. Check that first and if the vial is not at least yellow, lime it until you get it green colored. I do not care about the other tests, just the Ph. I can adjust the other values by my choice of ferterlizer and suplements.

I bet TruGreen (AKA Chemlawn) is cheaper than the recommend DIY approach, however, I doubt they care for the lawn nor apply the same quality products. When I lived in the North East I had TruGreen care for my lawn starting my second summer I was there. I had this lawn looking beautiful, but started traveling a lot for the job. They ruined all my hard work and I had to start from scratch... I ended up firing them and taking over... hence why I subscribe to this channel.

ok just a minor question. ok when mapping the lawn if you have a section that is 255 SQ ft curb strip and a 1,133 sq foot section. Do you calculate both into one app or calculate the 225 seperate from the 1,133 Section?? also since the milo is hard to find in my area. are you going to test the and Do a video with the 18-0-1 and a test regiment??

Come on Allyn, make a spreadsheet where we can plug in our lawn size, cost for what we are applying, application rate, etc. and send it out with the weekly newsletter. That would be the bomb. Maybe a subscriber could help with it if you can’t do it. That would be throwin’ down the math!

I have over 1.5 acres but my house and driveway come out of that. I need to measure how much lawn I actually have. I have had a national lawn care company do my lawn for the past 4 years and the results are VERY mediocre. They have killed bushes and two small spruce trees and I pay over $1000 a year for 7 applications. I’m going to do this myself but I hope the cost isn’t crazy high for sure!

LCN, so I still use Milorganite and I use starter fertilizer in Spring and Fall as well as Solucal lime on my lawn. I did a soil sample and it came back low on PH(5.5) and low pottasium. My problem is I have 1/2 acre of lawn to take care of and I don’t want to spend too much money on lawn. What can I add to make up for low potassium that will be a supplement to what I currently use without breaking the bank? Thanks

Great video and explanation. Two questions, with milo use what do you use if your lawn is low in potassium? Do you still use starter fert for that? Second, love your reggae music in your videos. What’s your favorite reggae band?

How about equipment costs? Getting a decent spreader and sprayer is going to run about $200 which should be factored in for those who are really trying to figure out their RoI.

Dimension ~$38 per application per acre. This Pre emergent is the longest lasting out there. If you drop this down in March, more than likely you are good for the year. Scotts Turf Bulder $39 for 15,000 Sq ft so 3 bags per acre Tenacity ~1 Acre Treatment $20 kills just about every weed you will have in a lawn without killing your turf and is all around an amazing product. Honesty, these 3 things are really all you need. I would say no more than $175 bucks a year on your ACRE. Not only that, you are using high quality products. Both Tenacity and Dimension are both commercial products. If you have less than an acre the prices goes down considerably. I do like MILO, but the bang for buck isn't there for me.

Not bad at all for a small lawn but mine is 6 acres in total. Just my front yard is ~70,000 sq/ft(~1.75) acres. Any suggestions for a large scale lawn?

Hey LCN! New Sub here. I have watched a TON of your videos in the past 3 days. I'm up in Idaho and currently dealing with an ugly lawn. Had my house built and they did sod in the front yard and no grass in the back yard. So my sod was doing fine in spring... But is now very yellow/brown in the middle, but green on all the edges -_- Anyways, I am now starting with the restoration process following your tips. However, I get lost easily. And it made me think, there would be a GREAT video you could make for people like me. I think it would be super helpful if you had some form of list of what are "Throw'er down" products and what aren't. And when is okay to "Throw'er down" and when isn't! A video like that would be awesome. And I bet you already have one, or talk about that in a lot of your videos. It's just hard to find :P

I was at Lowes tonight and they had Milo in stock so I bought 5 bags. The guy that helped me load it up said in the last month they have been having a lot of customers coming in and asking for Milorganite if I could tell him why?? I told him about your channel on KZbin and he said he was going to go watch it when he got home and when I told him some of the benefits he said he was going to start recommending it :) lol. I am in the Miami part of the state so I guess you have a bit of an audience down here - so darn, I thought I had you all to myself lol. I do have a question if I may - I saw the Scotts Bonus S and the Bayer Souther Weed and Feed for St Aug grass. I ordered a bottle of Blindside, If I put that down, can I fertilize with Milorganite close to throwing down the Blindside to mimic thier weed & feed scenario? Thanks, from Peter, see you in the lawn-run :)
