Hi Stella good fix, very fiddly things these small 2 strokes machines, but I enjoy working on them. I’m currently been working on a 2004 Ryobi hedge trimmer i believe it’s just badged Ryobi as the quality looks better than modern Ryobi stuff. That poor Torch spark plug, I bet HE would have worked 😂😂 obviously whatever it needed a new plug in it. Nice professional repair Stella especially liked you using the trim removal tools to avoid damage to the plastics most would be jamming steel screwdrivers in there. In Canada we likely would have ended up owning this unit for parts since we charge a 1/2 hour minimum labour rate and would likely have quoted 1 hour labour plus the coil cost for this repair. I believe this unit is around $145 tax included new and our repair cost at this years rate would have been maybe $25 less than that cost.

Hey Lawnmower Lady! Late to this video but hope you are still around. I've watched a lot of Leaf Blower repair videos, this one is the best by far. Excellent presentation and thorough explanations! I love it! I especially liked the explanation for testing the coil with a meter and the bonus explanation for using the analog multimeter. I have both, but now know how to use the old one from my Dad! Question for you, can the coil simply be too weak to produce adequate spark, or is it an all or nothing situation? I have what seems to be adequate spark at the plug itself and have spark in the plug tester that I use (clear tube with spark point inside), I seem to have fuel flowing to the engine, the fuel is fresh, I've even tried using starter fluid sprayed directly into the cylinder and there is no start, not even a muttering of combustion. The kill switch functions as expected. I even took it apart, cleaned it and it tests properly on its own off the blower. When installed on the blower it disconnects the circuit properly and stops the spark getting to the plug when the switch it depressed and the rope is pulled. There seems to be compression (using your thumb test) but I don't have a gauge. I simply can't get the Leaf blower to start. It ran great just recently (In the winter I use it for blowing away lighter powder snow from the paths, vehicles and such, before it melts into ice) and do that for several of my neighbors, so it runs for quite awhile each time I use it. Sometimes it would be hard to start after I shut it off, but it would usually start again without issues when I went to use it again a few days later. Today however, no dice. It won't even try to start. I'm reluctant to do a tear down on this unit again, or just start replacing parts randomly, but am at a loss. Any ideas? BTW, my blower is a Ryobi Back Pack style, BP42. So a different configuration but essentially the same overall construction. Thanks so much for putting up this video!
@TheLawnmowerLady10 ай бұрын
Hmmmm. Generally speaking, failing ignition coils will start to fail when hot. They don't necessarily over heat and stop sparking, but more like when you stop the machine temporally to add fuel or change an attachment. It must cool down for 10-20 minutes before it restarts. I didn't see you mention if you change out the spark plug. They can test good in open air and fail when under compression. They are inexpensive (don't buy the cheapest Torch of E3 plug), so it's not a huge investment of throwing parts at the machine. Get a NGK or Champion. Not sure where you are located, but if you are doomed to purchase only ethanol laced fuel, a carb clean/service might help. Continued use of ethanol can make gaskets, seals and diaphragms stiff and crunchy. Blowers are notorious for stirring up a lot of dust and debris that will clog both the fuel filter and a tiny inlet screen inside the carburetor. This video might help if you've never gone into one of these small carbs ( although it's a Husqvarna trimmer, it covers the same principles of fuel system service on small 2-stroke engines that have a purge bulb) kzbin.info/www/bejne/mnS0i5l5mZd1aM0 Hope this helps.

@TheLawnmowerLady Жыл бұрын
@@kevangM Before you throw any more $$ into the machine, I would make sure you are covering the basics: spark, fuel, and air. The easiest way to tackle all three at once is to spray a few CC of fuel directly into the carb intake, open the throttle wide open and pull the starter several times. If the machine burbles and coughs to life for a few seconds, you've confirmed it has spark and air. That leaves fuel issues: worn/dirty carb, broken fuel lines, clogged fuel filter, etc. Eliminate one thing at a time. I would not rule out a faulty aftermarket carb, try this with the original carb. Hope this helps.

@TheLawnmowerLady no, i just dont want to overspeed the unit beyond manufacturers recommendation. On my Husqvarna HU800AWD mower with honda engine, max RPM is 3850 ±150rpm. Didnt know if there was something similar for the blower as well. Btw: love your channel. Keep up the good work!

@TheLawnmowerLady also, this unit ive already rebuilt carb, replaced fuel lines and filter, and replaced the coil, spark plug. Runs like a champ.

Mowers are based on safe blade rotational speeds. That said, I think you'd be hard pressed to over rev that blower with the limits of the trim screws on the carb. I'd think you would wouldn't be able to keep it running if the carb was adjusted so lean as to over heat the head and score the piston. If you're looking for a good spot for tuning, I'd let it warm up well, increase the idle speed a few hundred RPM then find the sweet spot for your idle on the low speed screw. Pin the throttle and adjust the high speed screw somewhere between too rich (burbling or 4-stroking) and too lean. On a blower, you do need the tubes in place, and some people say pointed at the ground to simulate the blower under load. When you are happy with your settings, roll the idle speed screw back down. Hope this helps. Cheers!

At the beginning, you just saw ‘torch’ on the name of the spark plug and immediately said that would be a problem. Why would that be??
@TheLawnmowerLady3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Ms Inisfad. There is a significant, albeit antidotal amounts of reported failures and poor performance reported by many small engine mechanics. I personally have had more problems with those overpriced, and overhyped E3 plugs.

Why you to put a business card between the coil and impaler
@TheLawnmowerLady26 күн бұрын
Many DIYers don't have special tools like feeler gauges. Business card is a good substitute to get the correct air gap required between the flywheel magnets and coil.

My dealers around me won’t even do this repair

It's pretty tedious as you can see, and at their shop labor rate, not worth the $$ to repair. Thanks for watching.

@@TheLawnmowerLady thanks I’m going to try the repair myself! Can’t hurt I guess. I’ll wther save it or kill it lol

My small engine repairman, whom I visited too often according to my wallet, seems to hate your videos. Not only do I not visit him as often anymore, but it seems that I also "steal" customers from him, by repairing the equipment of my friends and neighbors.

Glad to hear that! I'm honestly just trying to save the planet, not to lighten any repairman's wallet. I appreciate you watching. Cheers!

Never did I see anything bad on a leaf blower other than a string repair. Mix your oil right ,don't store old gas.

Bro what are you taking about. the ignition coil went bad over time has nothing to do with the maintenance of the machine. You could have the cleanest engine and the coil still goes bad lol I’ve hade a blower like this for 6 years and hade 0 issues in its life always kept it running mint. My coil still went lol

Gave you a thumbs up, Stella. The second one of your videos I’ve watched and your production qualities are great! I like how you add fastener sizes visually. One thing - the pretty much accepted vernacular for measurements is “thousandths”, and I realize you’re aiming your instructions at novices, but maybe better if you use that description so viewers are all on the same page with the professionals. Just a thought. Also, I think most newbies nowadays pick up an inexpensive digital caliper for $15 or less. I did and now wonder how I ever did without it, especially since my eyes at almost 75 aren’t what they used to be. Question - I see you have some mowers stored vertically outside. Other than saving space is there any reason you do it that way? I may follow your example as I have 10 at last count. Draining fluids first, of course! Thanks for doing such a great job! Will continue to watch more of your older ones. 👍😉🧰

Thanks for Rein! More than 35% of my viewers are not in the US. The rest of the world is metric, and I hope to make my videos more accessible. All those mowers are parts mowers, and they are upright to take up less space. I appreciate you watching. Cheers!

Thank you. I cut off before you showed how to adjust gap. Now I have to take it apart and do that. 🥲.

@@TheLawnmowerLady I took the Ryobi apart and set the clearance like you showed with a business card. Now, I can't get it to start. After putting in the new coil and before adjusting it started and ran for about a minute. Then won't start again. I checked for a spark last night I was getting spark on the spark plug gap. I tried to prime with gas but still won't start. I checked the compression, and it is 130 pounds. Is it possible that the coil went bad or am I missing something. I checked the spark plug by using a known good one from my lawnmower. I hate to throw the unit away. I replaced the carburetor as It wouldn't prime. If I sprayed some gas in it would start and run. Now that doesn't work. Any ideas?🤔

My best advice is to go back one step at a time, and look for problems. Maybe a pinched wire? A disconnected ground? No spark leads me to believe it's down to the wiring, maybe the switch?
