As a kid I always thought LBJ looked old. And now that I am 57 years old I understand because I look just like that.

I feel LBJ was subconsciously trying to set a precedent when it comes to respect to his predecessor as President. Offering the use of government vehicles, doctors, etc...to both former Presidents Truman and Eisenhower. He's probably hoping his successors would provide the same level of respect.

No, he did it because Harry Truman was one of the poorest presidents in the history of the country and even said he would probably be on welfare if it was not for his presidential pension. Of course, LBJ also wanted to keep Truman on his side

truman was considered to be a joke as president. Newspapers wrote about him with the headline : The worst of its times? - when he left office he had one of the lowest approval rates in history. It is history that made turman a "giant". But at the time of his presidency he was not.

the people who lived during his presidency were not so sure about this. He was called the worst of our times... when he left office in 1953 his approval ratings were close to 25% lower than LBJ´s after Tet and even lower before richard nixons resignation in august 1974. Even Trump never had an approval rate down to the twenties... But historians today ranked him as one of the top 10 presidents in the history of the U.S.

I am a Reagan conservative to the core. And with that stated Harry Truman was the best president of the 20th century save Ronald Reagan. And he is a very close second at that. Both of the believed in the greatness of America and never took the American people for granted.

@@firgasz2920 Part of that was because he didn’t go to war with China and fired MacArthur for wanting to go, however, I think no war with China was good because it would’ve escalated into a horrible conflict.

They were all so polite back then. I think people today think that if they are polite to those they disagree with that they are showing weakness. It is actually quite the opposite.

In my perception Truman and Eisenhower kept a certain, safe distance towards LBJ. He was 'asking' them for their assent. But he didn't got it. They knew about the content.
