Harry Truman once said that if you want a friend in Washington, get a dog!

God, LBJ would have been the ultimate wingman. I've never heard a smoother talker.

Because of Harry Truman my father is alive. When he gave the order to drop the atomic bomb he saved many many American lives including my father. God bless Harry Truman.

Wonder what history would have turned out like if Henry Wallace became the president instead of Harry Truman

LBJ was so good at being nice when he wanted to. What a dying skill it is. The purpose of the call was done within the first 80 seconds. The first 50 being spent on making HT feel totally at ease. Then HT tries to interject by saying "You know what [I'm coming anyway]" LBJ just stretches out the moment of good feeling for another minute. He was a master of people and communication.

Man. Were it not for Vietnam, Johnson, with all his flaws, all his character failings, all his corruption and backdoor dealing, would have been one of our greatest Presidents. No better political operator in our history. Tragic.

No, he basically created, along with FDR, the massive welfare state and entitlement attitude that so hampers us today

"You're entitled to be spoiled. You've done enough for your country that you're entitled to be spoiled." I completely agree with LBJ. HST was an amazing President, and better than FDR!

I agree. And I also believe he did the right thing with Japan. The bomb may have taken many lives, but it saved countless more by ending the war with Japan.

Couldn't agree more. I could wish a nuclear weapon had never been used, and I wish that door had never been opened, but there was no way at the time to know what the horrific, lingering effects of the bomb would be.
