The Rev. Dr. Matthew C. Harrison, president of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, explains Martin Luther's ITCP method of prayer, which features four steps: instruction, thanksgiving, confession and prayer. Harrison also recommends "A Simple Way to Pray," which Luther penned in 1535 after his barber and friend, Peter Beskendorf, asked for some practical guidance on how to pray. I grew up Lutheran and found, over time having moved to different cities throughout the U.S., the more and more I appreciate my Lutheran upbringing. Luther's perspectives were based in humility and avoided sensationalism - something I find in a lot Churches today. It's distracting from having an education (of sorts).

I was baptized in a LC MS as a baby. I'm 49 yrs old now. God has brought me full circle recently to the church of my baptism. I want to spend the rest of my life living my life as a Lutheran . I'm so thankful for God's faithfulness to bring me home to the beauty of the Liturgy and the faith of my ancestors.

I love this formula! It keeps I feel selfishness out of the equation. Being a confessional church I think addresses that best for me. It keeps me in check when I feel my life's not going the way I would like but instead helps me focus on what I have done in sin and not done in distraction by my self sorrow and grievances. Faith that his will be done and my obedience has always produced fruit in my life. Maybe not always the way I have intended but nonetheless, God will see me through but through his will.

Hi Gretchen. After three years, I hope you've received an answer to your question. Should it be helpful, I'd like to give you my thoughts. First, by "supplication," I assume you mean prayers for others in need. I see two places for that. One place is in Confession. We can (should?) confess the sins of our people. Nehemiah does this in Nehemiah, chapter 1. Another place is in the Prayer, which weaves everything together. This is where one may ask that his neighbor's faith be strengthened or that God provide your neighbor his daily bread (anything he needs to sustain his body and life), etc. I hope this is helpful.
