That is why I constantly monitor Pokevision on one of my browser tabs throughout the day. If you tick out the pokemon you already have, and put it at your current location, you will know that when a pokemon appears on the map that it is a rare one, and/or a pokemon you don't have yet. This should work for everyone as a workaround (a helpful one at it!) until they fix the 3 footstep bug. Even then, Pokevision gives you a unfair/fair advantage of seeing pokemon near your location. Trust me, some pokemon will appear near your location but be a tad far that it doesn't appear in the nearby list, so how would you know unless you use Pokevision? Hope this helps you! ^^
