I’d love a tv series that’s a mixture between viscera cleanup detail and civil protection. Two workers that are just completely unfazed by the horrific gore all around them and any paranormal events that occur because they’re both so used to and sick of their job, and spend more time discussing completely unrelated things like grandmas brownies and which mythological creature would win in a fight.

Heavy agree on the thing where horror loses its impact when the protagonists start fighting back. To me, personally, I think horror (especially supernatural horror) is also a lot better when there's accountability for the protags' actions. For example, did the protagonist ignore the warnings about not disturbing the sacred object? Then, let them receive the supernatural punishment for it. Did the protagonist act all skeptical and high-and-mighty about a certain superstition? Let them have the consequences of that. A lot of horror nowadays seem to have allergy to the concept of holding their protagonists accountable for the things THEY start, it's boring. Either that or they empower the protagonist to fight against something that's unfightable and win... hate that. imo, horror should be leaving me full of newfound paranoias afterwards, i should be fearing the consequences of going against the supernatural not acting like it's a school bully I'm gonna figure out how to fight behind McDonalds.
@TheLibrarianYT2 жыл бұрын
I think it can be really scary when a protagonist ends up in a situation through no fault of their own as well, or because of someone else.
@onicore2 жыл бұрын
@@TheLibrarianYT True! Having to deal with the aftermath of someone else's actions, accidentally getting in the situation or even having the problem kinda stumble upon a protagonist that was minding their business instead also makes for REALLY good storytelling. When they're not at fault there's that extra layer of "i have to find out WHY this is happening in the first place", which is really really nice

i think what you're talking about with the structure of horror movies and how tension is built and then sometimes thrown away is the difference between a horror and a thriller. some movies are pure horror - tension and ambiguity with maybe a catharsis at the end - and some are thrillers - think jurassic park, it's horrible and scary but the threat is clear the entire time - and some movies switch from being a horror to a thriller if the catharthis is done somewhat early. a horror could also have the characters actively fighting the threat but with increasing understanding of the futility of it, and a thriller could have the characters powerless to do anything (again think jurassic park). i think all styles can be done well but it's also largely a matter of taste.

The reason that you see so many prison like asylums in media, is that they tend to be based on early sanitoriums. Which had initially started with good intentions to help the disabled, insane, and otherwise challenged. As time went on, sanitoriums often led to poor treatment of patients, lack of kind treatment, and most often neglect. At the end of days of the sanitoriums, most were very overfilled, understaffed, and running off of an ever decreasing budget.
@Spider8itchy Жыл бұрын

@foogriffy Жыл бұрын
unfortunately that last sentence describes mental health facilities today as well. i've been in several, and while i've never seen or experienced anything nearly as bad as it was in sanitoriums, it's uhhh not great. abuse and neglect are still sadly happening plenty. maybe in the coming decades, horror media will feature the terrifying 'Behavioral Hospital' with their overly sterile, bland atmosphere, permanently closed blinds locked between slabs of bulletproof glass, nurse stations designed to keep the staff safe from aggressive patients, and the lingering understanding of how little the patients were actually helped in most cases. plus a lot of coloring pages and sickeningly clinical therapy worksheets maybe with a few graphorrheoic scrawlings on them

1:22:20 ish Talking about mental health institutions: They still exist in a "modern" form, at least here in Germany, and I heard a few people who said it helped them. But for the most part and friends over the years, I hear these are horrible places. Especially if you don't want to be there. They take everything away from you, lock you into rooms with cameras, if you try to flee they will try to capture you with force and they want you to take meds. The only way how some friends escaped, is that they played the roleplay of getting better and feeling ready to go back to society. I never want to be even close to these places. Just horrifying. I can't evaluate if these people are evil or just bad in helping others.

If it's subtlety you're looking for, I highly recommend the movie Annihilation, it's a movie that gets a lot of its creepiness and its draw from strange biological/scientific anomalies and the parts that are especially scary are shot in that exact kind of "You know when the character knows" way. It sets up a pretty interesting Cosmic Horror Esc mystery, even after you've taken the time to break it down. You never feel like you really answered every single question, and the horror and mystery of the story is mostly setup through its environment and somewhat surreal and creepy set pieces. Plus, not to spoil too much, there is a scene with a bear in it that genuinely had my heart racing the whole time and as someone who has grown up on horror since they were eight years old that effect cannot be understated.

For me, the horror movie I like the most is Scream (1 to 4), Ghostface is an interesting "character", I mean, its a specific image of the "same" killer, but, its not one specific character, its many people, literally everyone can be Ghostface, but still, its always the same personification but always a different identity, so they always discover who he is, always kills him and then he will always comes back and nobody knows him again. Its not a demon, not a ghost, but a legacy that goes from person to person from one movie to another

The idea that Asylums could be benign is interesting, but people really do like the evil experiments side of things. I remember watching Sucker Punch and thinking that the whole thing is probably happening inside the mind of a person who was lobotomized due to nefarious reasons. It’s terrifying to think about, you being stuck in your own little world as a result of permanent damage done to your brain done by nefarious individuals in order to keep you quiet. Regarding your talking about horror movie structure and going on the offensive, how do you feel about the first Alien movie?
@themanformerlyknownascomme7772 жыл бұрын
on the controvesial opinion: I think most people's problem (at least in my experience) with the consequences was not that they existed, but HOW they come about, you can have your high casulty pyhric victory, but don't turn your character's brains off for 15 minutes to get them in said scenario. with your own specific example of the beginning space battle, people weren't pissed that then Resistence lost so many assets, they were pissed that the Resistence was using craft far inferior to what it's previously used to make a very obvious callback to WW2 high altitude bombing, nevermind the fact that this was more an homage to the public perception of said high altitude bombing and not the reality, the b-17 was a fast, well armed and armoured beast (see Sacred Cow Shipyard's breakdown of the Star Fortress for more detail). I think many people would agree with you that having something new would be beneficial to the franchise, however, they want said evolution to make sense and be logical not just from a storytelling perspective, but a more practical "realistic" sense, because nerds can, will and have used their own creativity and tactical thinking on the galaxy of star wars (or any franchise) give them any element and they will be able to find a way to weaponize the most mundane or handwave element into something that breaks the franchise (the infamous example in this movie was the hyperspace suicide attack, once you weaponize FTL, every single point in the franchise both before and after the scene now has that looming over it like a sword of damacolis as nerds quickly took the concept and turned it into a basis for a mass production missile superweapon). TLDR, it's not the concept so much as the execution.
