What makes the combine grunts and metro police worse than the others is that they fully know what they’re doing, they receive zero augmentation and beat and kill their fellow man for just a little bit extra food or better housing, the combine use humanity’s selfishness
@paulssss54633 ай бұрын
Just a lore tidbit, the metrocops aren't heavily augmented. They're simply human collaborators. I believe that they have the option to become a soldier, which involves lots of augmentations. In Half Life: Alyx, many soldiers still have some of their personality, despite their augmentations. This suggests that either lower level soldiers are less augmented than their superiors, or that over the years they've become less and less human due to additional augmentations.

I kinda wish retail HL2 had kept _some_ of this atmosphere and drear. The original original plan where every major NPC died as soon as you were done talking to them, I'm okay with that being cut as I enjoy Eli, Alyx, Barney, and Kliener. But I do feel that some aspects of retail's dystopia was _too_ subtle. That is, it made it difficult to fully appreciate how bad the rule of the Combine was without a lot of deep thought. A perfect example of this is the sea levels. There's a lot of ingame evidence to suggest where the waterline used to be, and now you see boats embedded in the exposed sea floor. But nothing really compares to actually _seeing_ it. Some of the HL2 maps got a pre-combine version, and it's only there that that aspect is _truly_ rung home. A longer tour of City 17 before reaching Kliener's Lab would also have been a good idea too. Something about as long as HL1's tram ride, I think. The beta _did_ have a longer section originally, and I wish they kept that for the same reasons. What's in the game we got is not enough to _fully_ appreciate just how bad the Combine screwed over Earth. Again, there's enough to _explain_ it, but that's necessarily the same thing as appreciating the scope. It's a weird double case of "show not tell." They show-not-tell certain aspects of the world, but those aspects _themselves_ are telling without showing. It's weird but I'm hoping someone out there understands what I'm trying to say.
@lewdslurkeragent3 ай бұрын
I do (understand) and completely agree. People keep saying subtle this, not outright apparent that.. but i see it as a bad argument because 90% of players don't even know that Earth was defeated in 7 hours or what is even happening. That is bad storytelling to be honest. There are more moments that make little sense. Every citizen is helping you for whatever reason too instead of being scared of the consequences or you know.. just meeting you for the first time in their life. Combine doesn't deploy stronger synth that we know they have (the 2 shown in the citadel) and spams weak humanoid overwatch soldiers with little change in difficulty, Striders and Gunships are shown as strong in one sections, then underpowered in the other, Breen is dressed like a school principal, all zombies wear white hoodies, there is no Xen or other alien infestation and creatures aside from lame overused antlions (not even bullsquids or houndeyes), no weaponized scanners, battle inside Citadel (big disappointment) was quite lame too when you get the blue gun and just go around ragdolling everyone with extra armor not meeting anything remotely alien or scary aside from one scene with crab and mortar synths, etc.

Welcome to the world of the Half-Life 2 beta my friend, where Valve had many concepts and ideas that unfortunately didn't make it into the final game. Despite not being a part of the retail game, there are some interesting and intriguing facts about the locations and details on the map that I'd like to share with you. Let's dive in, shall we? First, let's talk about the man on the screen - the Consul, as he's known throughout the story drafts. We never actually learn his real name but that doesn't really matter one you should know about the Consul is that he isn't human longer if you actually take a look at him when he's about to make his announcement you only see his head and shoulders and that's it really and you could interpret that rest of his body is just disgusting synthetic body that he shall forever thanks to his masters. the second fact at 5:43 is that the big building you try to enter that place is called the manhack arcade where citizens can go play an arcade machine that lets them play as a manhack and you definitely not controlling real manhack that metro cops deploy and you are definitely not accidentally killing rebels and refugees what nonsense is that. That's all I got for now because I'm tired as hell i hope you find this facts interesting and have a good day/night.

When it comes to humanity, how do we come back? We adapt. As we always have. That`s why humans are one of the most prolific and succesful larger single species to ever live. Because humans have just the right mix of intelligence, durability and capability to effect our enviroment to manage to be the only speciess to manage to survive in every, and proliferate in nearly every enviroment we come across. So even after such devastating events, humans would take two or three generations at most to be back at normal life. And with what the combine left around likely quickly surpass what we had before. And it also wouldn`t be the first cataclysm humanity survived and came back from stronger, not even the first "near apocalypse".

I want a game where someone discovers Aperture labs and reclaims it's portal and AI tech. imagine a world where the aperture researchers and the people from black mesa had access to such advanced technology. wait... what if cyberpunk is just set in the future of the halflife universe? honestly if that's what we end up with after the combine are beaten I'd be fine with that.

As much as I love the HL2 beta aesthetic, I think I prefer retail HL2 for presenting it's dystopian world in a more subtle way. You discover more about the world through observation, rather than it just being right in front of your face. I think the main thing I would want from the cut version is the enemy and weapon variety, at least some of it.
@lewdslurkeragent3 ай бұрын
What subtlety? When there is barely anything presentable you don't have subtlety, you have missed opportunities and lack of believable environments or world in general. Dark Interval's environment (not gameplay) aside from Manhack arcade and Raising the Bar Redux show the superiority of HL2 Beta. There is no copium observation and other excuses that Retail forces one to make. You instead see, feel and live through it, getting that dystopian world under cruel alien subjugation. Take for example a simple scan drone. It is not a useless flying camera like in retail, it is there to both record/scan and engage the target if necessary. Or stalkers which combine in Beta made to be more of a dangerous enemy from your former "allies" instead of walking laser lump being a waste of resources. The lack of if not absence of alien flora and fauna aside from overused antlions is one of the dumbest choices that they went with in Retail. Not to mention lack of any enemy variety or weapons. We get boring humanoid looking overwatch soldiers instead of cut Beta synth units that would fit perfectly into the setting. You can barely tell the importance of an elite combine overwatch soldier aside from his alt ar2 fire ability. I could go on and on but I am sure you understand by now.

Besides even the versions that feature the pollution also got a chapter in which you are "fixing" the pollution (Air Exchange). So no more "dark and gritty" pollution after that.
