POV: you're the overnight security guard at the orphanage and every night over the cameras you watch the cleaning guy come in and pretend to host a podcast to maintain his sanity. You know what big-budget series really got horror? The X-Files. That show was willing to let horror breathe, to leave it unresolved. And even when it did get resolved, it wasn’t a victory, if anything it was often more tragic and distressing. Horrors chewed up and spit up by the modern world. The Jersey Devil being gunned down, as Mulder mourns her. Eugene Tooms being ground up by an escalator in what was once his home. A cursed creature bringing Mulder back from the dead so it could finally die. Horror works best when it’s both mystery and tragedy. Nothing else quite compares.

1:02:57 I think Phasmophobia is less about rendering a house safe from hauntings, and sorta the inverse of VCD. You are the crew that identifies the type of spirit before Sam and Dean or the Ghostbusters are involved, like in VCD where you are the janitor during the aftermath of a horror movie.

I love your talk about what makes effective horror in media and a movie I remember like that is the original alien. Throughout the movie you don't get any naked look of the creature and almost every kill it does is off screen or obscured letting your imagination conjure who knows what about it, also no explanation is given about it's origins that carries to Aliens with the exception that they have a queen.

This game is a horror-game. Keeper of the Hall of Books got demoted after getting 90%. Truly realistic and horrifying.
@Techhunter_Talon2 жыл бұрын
That's another annoying thing with VCD. If you get less than 91% completion then the game acts as though you barely did anything. Then again, in this case, the Librarian actually didn't do as much as he thought. The writings on the walls* and the canned food actually did need to be disposed of. Him stacking crates actually saved him from getting less than 90% on the level. *The utility dispenser in the basement of this level can dispense vials of acid that is used to 'weaken' the graffiti on the walls when you smash them against it. At that point, you can mop it up.

You are, literally the only man that I wouldn't mind watching a whole play through of this game from. I love those Cleaning type games. I recently had the pleasure of playing powerwash... until my PC broke.
@Official_Arion2 жыл бұрын
As much as I wanted to be a fast commenter, I wanted to wait to see if the map is modded before I said anything... But something I didn't think about (until your video on the house of horrors) that REALLY expands this game's playtime is the fact that there's workshop support! I already love this game a lot, so there being modded maps out there makes me really happy, though since I have my attention split between tons of other games and videos, I hardly have the time to focus on this game, despite being one of my favorites. Edit to add some horror movie discussion... My favorite horror movies are Sinister, The Gallows, this first Paranormal Activity, and Grave Encounters. You can probably sense a theme there. I think my favorite part about found footage horror is that it's tied very closely to realism, but even so, horrific things tend to happen. With my favorite scare out of all of these movies being the scene where a character falls from a tall ladder in The Gallows. The tension behind it along with the terrifying pay off being super rewarding. I can remember the first time I watched the scene and how terrified I was before, during, and after. Honestly, it realized a lot of the fear of ladders (and falling off them) for me. But I think the movie that did tension and no final resolution was Sinister, the entire movie was intended to be inescapable, though don't even watch the sequel if you hate final battles with ghosts, because it has one, and it's a spectacle, sure, but it turns pretty action-y. Though it keeps some of the pros from the first. Paranormal activity and grave encounters are just terrifying and are probably responsible for half of my nightmares... They really fit the ghost bill so well, and there's no final conflict, just tons of tension and tons of horror. These two are probably the hallmark of paranormal horror, and for a good reason.
@TehCakeIzALie12 жыл бұрын
You'd probably like The Borderlands ('Final Prayer' in the US). A really solid found footage movie, with one of my favorite endings in horror cinema.

Just to add on to the list of good horror movies, my personal favorite is 'The Void'. The effects are absolutely amazing and the story nails what's so terrifying about Lovecraftian-style horror. Kinda sad that there aren't any bodies. Having to guess how they died and then having it tell you you're wrong is one of the funnier parts of the game.
@Techhunter_Talon2 жыл бұрын
There would have been bodies if the 'squatters', aka: the cannibals that I'm pretty sure were grownup orphans that were originally residing in the orphanage, weren't so eager to leave the place and get away from the spirit haunting the place. Some of the other maps I suggested are similar where there's not any bodies to cleanup. I THINK only one that I had suggested actually had a major incident that you're cleaning up after.

I have to say that the first movie was the only "awesome" movie in the trilogy, but I also have to admit, if I knew more movies like Hell House LLC, I probably would become a movie person. I LOVE the sense of interactivity I get when a movie does a subtle scare that might be missed by the viewers. Sadly, jumpscare fests achieve the opposite by punishing you if you pay too much attention.

At around 3:00, it wouldn't be VCD without something getting lodged in something... and it's not even something with the map itself. XD 7:36 To be honest, the developer puts the bucket machine a fair bit deep into their maps so there's a higher likelihood you experience stuff... and to get the player to find their way through the map and see where things connect. Which some official maps do that too where you have to wade through the map's messes to find where your semi-unreliable dispensers are. 11:20 At worst from what I've observed is that you might get fired for taking too long... but if you just are playing these as one offs and not collecting things then VCD's speedrun mode should be fine. When you get fired, you lose everything you collected and brought into the office. Bad for collectors but for those that are just playing the game and don't feel they have anything to lose then it's fine.

On another topic, I get why you'd wanna play the Ghostbusters game for the athmospheric element on your channel, but I once made a let's play and I really don't recommend it. There are some gameplay mechanics that, combined with the absolutely lousy npc ai, just make for one frustrating experience, to a point where it literally kills the mood.
