Ah, shovel. Excellent choice. Axe is only for *very* confident fighters.

Now you’re in the part of the game where combat will become a bit more prevalent. The savages can be a source of rags for bandages, staffs (which you may find more comfortable than a 2x4), and alcohol. If you’re brave, you can make and equip a lantern on your hotbar, which will passively generates light around you, and you can patrol around your home and confront any events/sounds. The Shadows event can shut off your lantern however! So get near the remaining lit lamp or pop a flare. Keep on keepin’ on, friend.

the only downside to dying during a night is that you get no trader rep, dying outside is a different story since you have to look after your stuff which is all in a tiny bag (also that new trader dialogue was because of your first night at the new hideout)

I wish normal mode had the chance of having your material items looted after dying, so it's not totally recoverable when you die in your base.

Just popped in for a quick tip: It is possible to create perfect barricades for every one of the houses in the first half of the game using furnature and some Tetris wizardry. Monsters can still get in if they really try, but they only intentionally break things if they encounter a boarded up door or see you. This is great for the first half of the game, because otherwise you'd be spending resources faster than your reputation can buy. In the second half of the game, you've got to do a 180 on your tactics. Barricades will not work anymore, as enemies can pop out of the ground, so all you would be doing is blocking yourself from escape. But you earn enough reputation each night to refill your ammunition reserves, so active combat is the better option along with traps.

"Is there going to become a point where I'm going to be using firearms most of the time?" *Yes.* There is going to be a point were you'll be blasting away at the woods. You're not there yet, but you're getting close. You can also repair the furniture, it's just take a lot of nails and planks. On you're last night you had the right idea with the furniture blocking the doors on the outside. You can also try to make a wedge with two or more pieces of furniture to make a barricade as well.

I noticed in the little symbol spot you got that knife from that there was one of those shiny stones on the ground. I don't know about you, but if you keep running into issues with needing rep with people like Wolfman, maybe that sort of thing would be useful? I also really like the bike man's little parting phrase. "Like a nun in a cucumber field"? It really solidifies his character as a dirty old drunk. Anyways, I believe that your window barricade got broken, you missed it in the chaos, but there was another savage beating on your barricade. Speaking of that night, a big issue was that you were at half health. Librarian, you knucklehead, you can heal yourself near electric lights! Speaking of electric lights, your base is full of them, just standing outside. Maybe that's why you have such a problem with savages? And you don't want to die in your base for that rep, good sir! Seriously, you'd start running into problems fast without the trader's help. Oh, those shrines aren't some game specific lore piece. That's just something you see in Slavic countries, little shrines, usually with the Virgin Mary in the little alcove in the middle. Although, the fact that they're all knocked over could have some meaning? Oooh, and it looks like you got complacent around an elk. Those things are bloody evil, you really gotta stop pausing to check your inventory when one's rushing you down. In general, the wolfman mentioned that you gotta be tough to make it through here...

Rep gain when surviving the night is worth x2.8 cans of gas, and that's just at the first hideout! Later, more difficult hideouts give you even more rep!

btw, i hope you aren't bothered by all the advice-giving from people, incl. myself. I've watched like 3 people stream this game. One of them ragequit, and another one almost did before the end. Granted, both of them played really recklessly but still. Game is no joke. edit: You have a dodge button. Special abilities too. You can board up doors and repair dressers ('plus sign on mouse=context menu' on everything!). 33:00 Besides the rep loss & corpse run, if you really want to suffer from dying you could turn the difficulty up ;)

(minor spoilers imo) Do I remember it wrong or isn't hard also limited lifes like hardcore but you have several instead of just one? That creates a lot more dread about dying but he's just a little bit too uncomfortable and underequipped for combat to do that just yet. I love however that the only complaints about this game are minute balancing issues regarding difficulty and the felt severity of dying because of it. There needs to be a setting in between where you definitely lose something of value if you die, like the watch or ammunition in my opinion. Otherwise, dying CAN feel to inconsequential on normal and way too punishing on higher difficulty. (considering the rogue lime elements, a save system like suggested would ruin the game if not severely restricted because it would turn into a quickload-fest quickly) Well... if he dies in a harrowing location instead of at the hideout though... edit: I'll watch until the end before writing a comment next time (:

@@Reggae-Gandalf imo i dislike that the only difficulty options are Normal, Easier Permadeath, and Permadeath(Ironman?). I want difficulty modifiers that actually change something, like reduced resources in particular (I was swimming in stuff by the end bc of my scrounging).

In case you never found out, that red light was a flare. There's a night event where a villager can light a flare outside your hideout and run away.

Alright, one tip about the combat. Let the enemy swing first, then react. This can easily be applied to the savages with the sticks. If he raises his stick above his head, it means he'll swing in the middle. React by charging up your shovel and sidestepping either to the right or left. If he looks like he'll do a swipe around him, just step back, charge your shovel, see if it swings back, then step foward and hit him with your shovel. If you're out of loop with the timing of hitting your enemy, middle click to do a quick jab. That's all I got with my experience with the shovel, I hope this bit of advice on shovel handling can help.

Hmm, so right now your best approach is definitely to make the switch from your board with nails to a shovel and begin upgrading that (it is a shame it's going to take a bit of set up to accomplish, but it's definitely doable). There seems to be consistently a notable difficulty curve each new hideout you go to, so it definitely pays to make upgrades you feel are necessary to your equipment/load-out before you move on. Right now, until you are able to more consistently survive nights, you may definitely notice a reputation shortage with your trader buddy. However, one immediate thing that may help you out when it comes to enemy incursions is to actively move around and evade enemies. Sometimes they may not be busting in to come after you specifically, but instead are dead set on clearing obstructions and passing through your shelter. So sometimes it is best to retreat and hope they lose interest unless they have spotted/heard you and you know they are actively hunting you. In this regard, having a larger area of your shelter to hole up in will definitely help; you have more room to dodge/bunker down depending on what shenanigans the local enemies are up to that night. Of course, in case of the 'shadows' night event, you may find your options more limited, so it definitely pays to be well equipped to fight off enemies in the event you are left with no other choice. Firearms may not be necessary quite yet until the next shelter, but right now, you definitely are on the right track by packing things like pills for healing/stamina regen + molotovs ontop of your bear trap setup. Those may end up saving your life if you use them with caution in conjunction with a shovel until you are able to reliably arm yourself with ranged weapons.

You wait until the last second before nightfall to turn on the generator, arrive after nightfall and then cause a lot of noise by moving furniture around, of course many enemies will come if you make so much noise at night.

my theory when you die is: You don't ACTUALLY die. The Trader ( or mr. gasmask to me. ) saves you and makes sure you are still alive until it is day, meanwhile out in the woods (or the wilderness) he can't cause the amount of enemies. (& or foes. )

*Dear Mr Librarian* I believe I've got some important information regarding deaths It all really really depends on the difficulty. Based on the wiki: *Normal Mode:* "The forgiving mode. When dying, you drop a part of your equipment." *Hard Mode:* "The unforgiving mode. You have a limited number of lives. After that, it's game over." *Nightmare Mode:* "The ultimate thrill. Death is permanent." Also Quick Important Notes worth mentioning: *When dying, your enemies you've killed that day will respawn at different locations, except from the ones in special location (probably for the sake of not cheating by knowing the surprises of bosses maybe?)(generally tho it looks as if you were brought back in time or something, which sounds very reasonable in that scenario)(correct me if im wrong!) *Regardless of the location and difficulty, you randomly drop half of the items you are carrying, stored inside a backpack on the spot of your death, marked with a blood splatter on the map and on the ground aswell.

It's notable that the mode you're playing with infinite lives is an "accessibility" mode more or less, and I would argue that the 3-lives or permadeath lend themselves more to the overall tone of the game.
