before you comment about the boycotting stuff, this is what NL had to say in the Discord server: -I had no idea what McDonalds had to do with gaza and still don't but I will read up on it -well I don't want people to make excuses like "yet you use a cellphone" etc -- the real excuse is I just didn't know so that's on me -it's important to people and they can express their feelings over it, moreover it will impact my behavior in the future -it's all good honestly, I appreciate being made aware stuff regarding the subreddit hate threads: -I will not check the subreddit, that is the hater domain and I love that for them -it is just normie brain where the older I get the more I'm like, if you haven't liked something for this long just leave -when I had more time I tried to interface more w people like that to keep them happy but there's no winning really bc for every person you placate you change something that irritates more people anyway -this has happened enough times in the past -- new logo/branding, psychoanalysis after NLSSes, changing the thumbnails to not just be cartoons anymore, etc. -people are entitled to not enjoy the content and post about it I'm just surprised, wouldn't be me -in the end I do the same thing with stuff I don't like on stream so you won't hear me getting on my high horse too much

Honestly, I was most disappointed that the thing was in Canada only, as if most of his viewers weren't from other places in the world, and McDonald's wasn't spread around most of the world. Politics be damned, don't care. The whole segment was really bizarre though, NL shilling for the McD's app so shamelessly and repeatedly asking for "lionFries" in the chat. For a couple hours he turned into a chinese tiktok streamer.

@@rocktheboat56 Then I suggest thinking a little more critically about the world you live in. McDonalds has been a pioneering company, not only responsible for its own activities but for wide ranging changes in how we live our lives generally. We can recount some of their achievements: -Like tobacco and oil companies that have suppressed science and regulation harmful to their businesses, fast food companies like McDonalds actively campaign against animal welfare legislation, nutrition disclosure legislation, environmental information about how harmful meat consumption is, and labor laws that impact their reliance on extremely poorly compensated workers
-Meat consumption is the most environmentally destructive habit we have, and McDonalds is in a real sense responsible for the massive growth in the rate of beef consumption in rich countries. -Consumption of food like that served at McDonalds is also directly responsible for the most common forms of morbidity in rich countries (diabetes, heart disease)

-McDonalds pioneered a form of advertising that sought to obfuscate the relationship between corporation and consumer. It started with a clown aimed a children, a general wholesome Americana image. Later, McDonalds began targeting the black community in America (who are currently much more likely to die from heart disease than white Americans). McDonalds very aggressively moves into developing countries now, exporting a wasteful, destructive, and unhealthy way of eating that outcompetes local options just as it did in the US

-In the context of the discussion about “parasocial relationships” with influencers common around these parts, it’s telling that so successful has the McDonalds branding model been that many can’t even understand the degree to which they’ve been influenced into feeling a strong emotional bond with a corporation

-McDonalds also pioneered a starvation wage, assembly line approach to food service built on the lie that it is a “stepping stone” job for teenagers. Wages have been driven down for decades as a result of the success of this approach, and the ability of companies like McDonalds to aggressively move into markets and erode alternative forms of employment.

@@saintsalieri Either you copy and pasted that, or you actually sat down and wrote all of that. Whichever the case, it's sad because I'm not taking the time to read probably even half of it because I'm not going to write an essay responding to it. However i'll still state my argument, the tech industry as a whole is to my knowledge much worse for the environment, and humanity. With some quick googles the mobile games industry rakes in 90b~ a year and mcdonalds at 25b~ a year. With that directly funding companies like google and apple(google store and apple playing being the 2 largest mobile gaming platforms pretty much uncontested), which im sure we both know aren't the best multibillion dollar corporations, through them taking 30% cuts. Mobile gaming addiction is also crazy bad in quite a few cases, being addicted to your phone is not good, pouring your bank account into it is worse. The predatory practices of some of these game companies and how they hook you. I could easily be making an argument about how we need to be protesting mobile games to stick it to google and apple. But the problem with that is the entire tech industry being in bed with each other and my protest would more than likely never been seen or heard by anyone, if they wanted it that way. At least with mcdonalds there's a physical store to stand out front of to spread your word, whether mcdonalds likes it or not. Mobile games being relatively low effort to make for the amount of money they bring in is insane and not good because that money just feeds into even bigger facets of the tech industry. Mobile games as a whole just pushes forward the crazy dystopian future we're heading towards, theyre just fucking trash that you don't get anything for doing that you pour money into and at least with mcdonalds you get a fucking burger and i could just keep ranting. I guess i wrote an essay anyway. youre not going to convince me you're right. mobile games are still and will continue to be worse for humanity as a whole than mcdonalds, and i'd urge you to reconsider yourself to think a little more critically about the world we live in.

Same with the streams with Jerma, Ludwig etc. Did some advertising and made sure it was entertaining. I'm okay with that, compared to weird invasive ad stuff, dark patterns or sneaky advertising. Edit: Just remembered the Digital Storm one too. He's good at being an endearing shill.

i think it was more of a shock to people when the usual sponsored segment is him saying "we were sponsored to play this game its on sale now" to looking like hes streaming on the mcdonalds twitch channel. still though the people who spend too much time on the internet are blowing this way out of proportion.

Can someone explain to me how supporting a McDonalds in Canada would help the McDonalds in Israel? They're franchised restaurants right?
@mdaily318
@mdaily318 8 ай бұрын
You are correct. It just depends on your perspective really. Even though these franchises actions were not done with the corporations permission according to the actual corporation, to some not stopping it is just as bad as donating money directly to Israel. Now you draw your own conclusions from that, but do remember that people in Palestine and now outside of Palestine (including innocent non-Zionist Jews) are suffering

Get off your high horse, no one is being kept up at night by this. When you post something publicly on the internet you expect engage with it including negatively. The sponsored stream was obviously different so of course people are going to mention it. Ironically everybody that is defending the sponsored stream thinks they’re normal when in reality they are the ones being abnormal defending their parasocial relationship with a millionaire streamer who doesn’t even know they exist. Believe it or not, people can be fans, engage with content, and express their dissatisfaction with said content. You don’t need to defend and baby him, he’ll be okay. 😁

@@stauner32 That's not how advertising works though and you know this. They aren't paying small streamers to advertise them. They're paying the big ones. He has a wife and a daughter and 2 very real human sons Tomo and Ryuka. His job is to make money to support his family and he has regularly done sponsored streams. Frankly, this stream is better than the countless number of crappy roguelikes he's been payed to play and then never touched again. The McDonald's overlay took over 15% of the screen, when he's paid to play a crappy video game it takes over 100% of the screen. People don't have this level of backlash when he's sponsored to play a video game, being sponsored by McDonalds isn't any different yet probably paid a lot more.
