How do we actually succeed in learning a new language? Methods and resources are important, but an often overlooked but hugely important aspect is successfully building a habit around your learning activities!
Today we take a look at some interesting research on habit formation and how you might actually want to consider planning to study a bit LESS in the beginning, in order to set yourself up for successfully learning a foreign language 😄
As always, I hope you enjoy these polyglot tips and another great discussion on building language learning habits!

I'm using this free time to learn japanese and chinese and I'm studying like, 3 hours to each language per day since two weeks ago, and I'm not a English native speaker

totally agree. i did the assimil farsi books+cd for years and never learnt to write. it was just too intimidating. and finally ... this year was the breakthrough. and it was just writing five words a day that broke the deadlock.

I really enjoy your videos, you have such great ideas and a fantastic way of expressing them. Personally, I prefer to not time myself. I prefer to go by motivation, but I ensure I study every day. First thing in the morning, I use Anki. Then, later in the day, I listen, read, write, and speak. I study until I can no longer focus and then do just one more paragraph, video, etc. This ensures that I get at least 15 minutes of the language each day. I have found timing an activity makes me focus on the clock too much, and not enough on the content. Maybe this is something to consider for others who focus too much on the clock when timing themselves. I'm looking forward to your next video!

Thanks for this great comment, Joseph! I'm really glad you find my videos to be enjoyable 😄 And you make a great point! Perhaps I should have mentioned that it doesn't necessarily have to be specifically a measure of time. I'm sure this comment will be helpful for people! 🙂 Thanks for the support and see you on Monday! 💪🏼

I'm on my first foreign language. I dont time myself, and I dont have a study plan. I wake up, have coffee then do my french. Whatever I feel like for that day. I translate songs I like, or a part of a fanfiction I want to read or watch a french in action episode... I just decide daily on a whim what I feel like doing. I think this is what keeps me motivated.

Hi Robin! It seems like in every video you address a question I'm struggling with just at that moment. It's uncanny. Thanks for the great advice.😊

I actually just started a new language a couple days ago, so this video came right in time. Definitely going to use your advice, and I'm going to make a solid plan. (I'm also still sort of working on another language, but I'm in the latter stretch so I've allowed myself to go ahead with a new one.)

This is good advice! The amount of times I've overloaded myself in the beginning and then stopped after a few days is ridiculous haha.

Ah, I'm going through exactly this now. Started Japanese three weeks ago. Flew out the gates studying at least 2.5 hours per day, and the last few days it's hard to get myself to come close to that at all. Also am studying Portuguese after shelving it a while back, so the new Japanese combined with the "where was I again?" in Portuguese has got me all discombobulated. But it'll get better soon!

I think this is great advice! I have let you language coaches smooth talk me into learning several languages, and now I have too many languages on my plate. This should help me whittle the plate down.
