Honestly some people don’t but that’s because their guard is up, or they’re consciously ignoring it. If you are trying you are probably learning

Are you in an environment where people speak only English, including at home? That's the biggest hurdle in general when people don't improve (unless you're only B1 level or below, where you *have* to study to improve quickly)

You inspired me today. I have spent a lot of time writing about travel. In major cities it was easy. Someone can speak English, Spanish, or German to me. It has been harder for me when I go to more remote areas. I need to learn.... When I tried in Estonia people respected me for attempting. I learned a lot just from trying . Thanks Steve for sharing your own story. Being from Northern Ireland I have been immersed in English but I have decided to learn Irish to connect me to my heritage and to speak to my sister's partner (who is Gaeilgeoir and translator). Would love if LingQ had Irish as I think I've gone as far with it as Duolingo can offer but maybe in the future. Learning Greek on LingQ though and so far so good 👍

Steve, whilst I agree with most of what you said in terms of seeking input, and practicing as an immigrant family. I profoundly disagree about not speaking your native language at home and in particular to your children. The children will be fine learning both languages simultaneously but will quickly lose their heritage language if not spoken at home. Also home should be a place to relax and unwind, not a language learning exercise. Fine 2-3 generations down the line inevitably the heritage language gets lost, but first generation children should have their heritage language at home, if nothing else to be able to communicate with their parents grandparents and family.

As a Filipino where my country depends on exporting skilled contract workers and emigrants as a means of getting foreign exchange reserves, our government must make studying Spanish compulsory so that Filipinos will migrate en masse to Spain and Latin America to get immersed in Spanish so that when they return to the Philippines, they will propagate the language to the Filipinos living in the Philippines.

I’m Japanese and a decade ago I’d been to study art college in UK for 2and half years. Since backing to my home, completely I’ve obsessed with my mother tongue world. At the moment I’d got between B2 and C1 level in English though. However, all of a sudden, last spring I remembered one of dream that I used to have in 20’s …becoming a tourist professional guide( government certified). For that I needed to refresh my command of English once again from scratch. That’s why I’ve been struggling with everyday😅 Now I’ve got work for German airline company as Japanese brunch telephone operator. Currently I’m in for 6months, now I’ve got feel a bit more confidence than before. BUT, every time I come across native English speaker, I’m so awkward in terms of speaking(English call is very few). I really know my speaking is yet to be unstable and not well communicated. Other my colleagues is so fluent to have their voices…amazingly😢 My immediate facing matter is…how overcome speaking so clear understanding as business level!! ( Systemic environment is English essential and German partially) I’m going to tackle with your excellent programs and apps day by day. If possible, let me know some hints for my improvement above!! Access to healthcare is a huge issue with a language barrier. I work in Medicare health insurance and it takes between two to three times as long to help someone get enrolled into a plan using a translator. (At least when you are legitimately trying to help the member learn about how coverage will work) Most insurance companies do have Spanish speaking agents, but there are not enough and it can really make things difficult for Spanish only speakers. And this is just over the phone with easy access to a translator. Fortunately our system does inform us of the non-English languages that are available at doctors offices so it’s easier for me to help someone get a Spanish speaking doctor. This does go for all languages, not only Spanish, but Spanish is the most common non-English language in the USA, especially in the states I have an insurance license in.

I enjoy your videos and I generally agree with you but I think it is not realistic to learn 300 new words a day, in my opinion, if you can learn 10 new words every single day it's very good because you have to review periodically those words to remember them

Sometimes the motivation to improve ultrafast is there. The more you do upfront the more motivation you also get from the excitement of understanding more the second you step foot outside.

¿Hablar el idioma local en casa siendo inmigrante? No me parece bien a no ser que parte de tu familia no tenga el mismo idioma materno, por ejemplo si tu pareja no lo tiene. Dentro de la familia hay que hablar el idioma materno siempre que sea el mismo para todas las personas que la integran; eso hace que la comunicación sea más auténtica, en mi opinión.

Speaking your heritage language helps you not to lose it. Speaking the local language at home allows you - or your family - to learn the local language more quickly. Why not speak both languages?

Para aprender una lengua no es necesario hablarla dentro de la familia cuando se usa en el resto de espacios. En todo caso la decisión corresponde a las familias, pero no me parece bien que se las presione para hacer algo que naturalmente no harían, haciéndoles cargar con una responsabilidad que no les corresponde.

@@Itziar_hay_yan I completely agree with the idea that the language(s) the family speaks at home should be their own choice and decision. Every situation is different, and different countries have different levels of friendliness or tolerance towards foreign languages. I still think that there could be reasons for speaking two or more languages at home. There also could be reasons to avoid speaking some language, or to stick to only one language at home.

I have read a couple fantasy books in Portuguese and it was so difficult! Like 60% or more new words.. some book I read and didn't understand at all but I pushed myself through it.. now.. months later . I'm reading a comedic/romance and I would almost say it's easy. I still have some difficulty but I understand 90% atleast of the content. Enough to actually understand why it's funny.. which I think it's important.. when you understand a joke in a language I think this is a good sign you've improved a lot. However my listening skills are much worse. I don't think I'd understand very well if I had the ebook version of this book. I don't think there is one . But I might just buy it if so just to see how I'd do:)
