I use print outs (ironically from google maps on a PC lol) for walking guides and a satnav I plug in the cigarette lighter in the car, google maps is just one of those apps I was able to uninstall from my phone so bc I was never in the habit of using it I deleted it just for the extra space. But like you I have gmails even if not for email specifically but yh bc play services on Android and obvs KZbin.

Yeah, self hosting is a niche now, but a lot of things we take for granted now were niche in the past. The Internet is a good example of that.

KZbin is the only google service that I pretty much can't leave. I use invidious when I can but it's not perfect. I have managed to replace every other google service entirely though.

Firefox just isn't what it was anymore. Without Google account I miss out on to many things.

Google is that one company that has mastered the Surveillance Capitalism business model to that extent, that leaving Google is a very difficult thing to do. Surveillance Capitalism is quite simple, create a disruptive and useful product, make it freely available, market it properly to users and let them come, collect every single piece of data from those users and use that same data to fuel the personalized advertising campaigns. But hey you don't want your users getting out of your ecosystem, that's your actual product! (the users). So apart from making the product literally so disruptive and useful that users will find difficult to leave it, design the product using dark patterns and make it a skinner box, this way users are encouraged to stay using the product and actually never think about leaving it.

For almost 5 years, I've been using Linux. The same amount of time, i don't use Chrome on the computer or on my Android phone. I don't use Google search too. But i do use Gmail and Google photos and maps.

We need the open source community to make a browser NOT using Chromium. (also could totally make Ubuntu Mobile more viable for the de-Googling crowd by removing the need for Android.) Some day, Google will join Stadia. Probably not in the next century, but maybe the one after that.

The FUTO voice keyboard for Android is great. The keyboard itself isn't as great, but the voice processing (on device!) is much faster and for me more accurate than the Google default.

54:00 it actually depends on the time of day also, i like to watch tech stuff during the day and then fall asleep to podcasts. when im in youtube during the day i see max 20, 30min videos, when i go there past 10pm i see a lot, and i mean a lot of podcasts, i dont see them during the day.

greetings from germany. matt keep up the good work. we are trying to reduce google and other cloud dependencies in the company. it's a hard road, but we are making steady progress and have reduced some costs and complexity. the next big step will be how to reduce our dependency on microsoft.

A handiman can certainly access YT videos without signing in with an account. There are third party apps for this that replace the YT cellphone app.

I can't de-google myself completely yet but i can reduce amount of data they collect to bare minimum. I would need to check out content on youtube alternatives such as odysee because it's mostly youtube that keeps me stuck to google.

@@TheLinuxCast from what I can see it's a purchased license to support them, you can still use it for free. I get being wary but I personally am happy to pay a one off $99 to support the devs of the currently closest project to Google Photos. Also from that blog "We think if you like and use software, you should pay for it, but *we're never going to force anyone to pay or try to limit Immich for those who don't.*"

@@TheLinuxCast Louis Rossman did a couple videos about it. The gist is they will be asking people to buy a license to pay for development but allowing you to use it without. The company currently does the same with Grayjay and Futo Keyboard.

KZbin, Android and chromium based browser are the things I still use. I want to switch to de-googled android but it is a bit more complicated to implement. Have no idea what to do wuth KZbin and browser, practically no alternatives.

The only alternative to Chromium Browser(Internet Explorer) got Microsoft sued for giving it to us (while Google and Apple were doing the exact same thing scot free) so now we have Google's Chrome, or Google's Chromium, nothing else. As for Android, we have Huawei which Google anti-consumered into irrelevance by blocking their stuff on their devices. (Microsoft, how could yo-...) Even on Linux it's Google or nothing, same for Mac/iOS.

You can self host but what’s going to happen is you won’t be able to send emails to gmail or outlook or apple emails because your domain isn’t trusted. You will still need to use a gmail relay server. The answer is no. Not actually. It’s either google, Microsoft, or apple, pick your poison. Or be an internet nomad and don’t make accounts which is silly.
