the funny thing is even though rings of power constantly does call backs to Lord of the Rings, it does not do the single greatest call back that is 100% cannon. Having Sauron put on the One Ring and Celebrimbor hearing (in Eregeon) "One Ring to Rule them all, One Ring to Find them, One ring to Bring them all. And in the Darkness Bind them. In the Land of Mordor, where the shadows lie. Because the rings can enable people to communicate telepathically to an extent Sauron literally broadcast that into Celebrimbor's mind even though they were far apart. (And the book says, "At that moment Celebrimbor knew he had been betrayed") Then they could have had a battle of Wills as Sauron sought to dominate the Elve's via their Rings as the Elves fought to resist him and take off their rings.

the whole scene with Sauron suggesting an alloy is such a hilarious self report on the part of the writers. "I've heard adding nickel (an element completely unknown until very modern times, they'd have known it as a natural copper alloy called 'cupronickel') to iron makes it lighter and stronger..." uhhh.... it makes it heavier, harder but considerably more brittle. Thus considerably less useful to what would be the equivalent of a medieval smith, since it would be an alloy hard to work with and frankly kind of useless for things like tool, weapons and armor... and somehow Sauron getting even the most basics of smithing ass-backwards impresses the grandson of Feanor This might seem a small thing.... but even Wikipedia gets this right. Nobody writing that scene did even the slightest bit of research...

​@@TheLittlePlatoon I slightly disagree. I usually do not like the "write by the seat of your pants" style of writing, but I have seen it work. More frustrating for me is when a writer accidentally makes a compelling story beat or premise, and then deliberately or accidentally destroys that due to not understanding the story they made and the people it was made for. I particularly remember a story that had a divide between the main heroes and another faction over how to respond to an impending crisis. Both sides had compelling arguments, but the writers wanted viewers to side with the heroes. The next season then made the second faction cartoonishly evil just so you had to side with the heroes. Funnily enough they weren't much better :)

So yesterday I and a few friends met for a session of TTRPG. I was the DM and I wrote the story from scratch. We all had an excellent time and played quite far into the night, engrossed in our adventure. At the end, I was complimented by my friends for both my story and my performance acting it out as a DM. Being a DM is the only experience I have as a writer. I can say with sincerity and objectivity that I wrote a better story than both seasons of the Rings of Power. I poured more effort, reflexion, research and respect for the world in which the story took place than the RoP showrunners ever did with the show. I wrote this story over a few days with the objective to spend a nice evening with friends. The RoP showrunners wrote for months to create two seasons of the most expensive TV show ever made. Utterly baffling.

That’s such a bizarrely stupid thing to say that the more charitable assumption is that they’re lying. However, it might explain why the reveal of his name was dragged out across season 2. The thing about that that makes me suspect they’re lying - perhaps to avoid all their interviews coming across as spoilers - is that there are so many blindingly obvious clues throughout S1 that that’s who he is. They even give him Gandalf’s lines. I don’t see them doing that if they don’t already intend for him to be Gandalf.

At which point they wrote themselves into a corner because of course he has to be Gandalf. As I said, the more charitable assumption is that they're lying. But it's a bizarre lie to tell because it's unbelievably stupid. I don't know people who intentionally portray themselves as more stupid than they are unless it's in a poker game.

Absolutely do it. Although if you don't read much it might be a little dense for you, it's really meant for people who love reading. It's not actually that bad but if you are used to reading popular paperbacks the prose can seem thick. Although only in parts. Just doing expect a lot of action, its a relaxed book for the most part, and he likes to slip into biblical or classical prose when it is a battle scene, to make it seem more grand and epic. But definitely give it a try, I read it when I was like 11, and didn't have any real issue with it.

Yeah this was....one of the weirdest things....Celebrimbor being told basic knowledge of metal mixing into alloys pfff....and he calls it 'inspiring suggestion' hah...well in the lore Elves obviously knew how to make alloys :), all cultures eventually learned that when they were learning metalwork skills at all :)..bronze, the most basic of alloys, and other (and speaking of mithril alloys....one can surmise that the ithildin that the elves made OF mithril was some sort of alloy which they worked for it's 'magical' property of reflecting only light of moon and stars, additionally also activated with words apparently in some cases) "Mithril! All folk desired it. It could be beaten like copper, and polished like glass; and the Dwarves could make of it a metal, light and yet harder than tempered steel. Its beauty was like to that of common silver, but the beauty of mithril did not tarnish or grow dim. The Elves dearly loved it, and among many uses they made of it ithildin, starmoon" ... "'They are wrought of ithildin that mirrors only starlight and moonlight, and sleeps until it is touched by one who speaks words now long forgotten in Middle-earth." Fellowship of the Ring Book II Chapter 4: "A Journey in the Dark" In this case of the Rings also...the 'secret arts' that Annatar was supposed to teach the Elves....one can certainly say shorthand for 'magic'. Elves would know all the physical/purely scientific knowledge of metalworking, metallurgy etc. In the First Age they worked with many metals making alloys...hell one of the famous seven gates of Gondolin was 'Gate of Bronze': ""hung with shields and plates of bronze, wherein were wrought many figures and strange signs."

he isn't half elf/half human? I could have sworn he was, but I might have misunderstood it. As I thought it was, his brother chose the human side and mortality, while Elrond chose the elf side and immortality, but I didn't see it as them giving up the side they didn't choose-Elrond's brother certainly had a much, much longer lifespan than a regular human would have, and those of his line had similarly long lifespans, though diminishing over time, while Elrond I think was one of the elves most humanlike in actually going about and doing stuff rather than sitting back and watching the world turn (though I am perhaps misremembering this bit, or conflating it with the general tone of elves in many other settings where they are like ents in LOTR that are basically almost catatonic compared to how active humans are)

His father Earendil is a half-elf, being the son of Idril the elven princess of Gondolin and Tuor the human emissary of Ulmo. His mother Elwing is the daughter of Dior, the son of Beren the human and Luthien the half-maiar, half-elf. Dior presumably married a full elf as the inheritor of the elven kingdom Doriath.

@BaneofGods Yes, he had a human father and an elven mother, but in Tolkien, elves and humans normally can not breed. Once Elrond chooses to be elvish, he is an elf fully on the DNA level. That is why Arwin is not called quarter human, or some such. Nor is he like a mule, the descendent of a donkey and a horse, i.e., a new species. Aragorn has a longer lifespan because he is a descendent of the Numenoreans as a whole, who were given the Island of Nemenor (the Valar raised up from the sea bottom) and longer lifespan than lesser folk as a reward for their service in the war against Morgoth. Their lifespan did start to wan, mostly because of marriage with those of lesser folk. Elves in the world of Tolkien are very active in the Fisrt and Second Age. By the time we see them in the Third Age, their civilization is winding down, and Humans are taking over.

@@zarinaromanets7290 well to be precise there is still the matter of perfection of the craft, so yes there is the process of achieving the 'height of skill', so in lore the elven-smiths of Eegion under teachings of Annatar at first started making these 'lesser rings' ("mere essays in craft before it was full grown") so basically there was still first experimental prototypes then full blown art of finished product :), but in the general sense yes there is that theme of decline, and how the older periods kind of like mythological golden age has stuff grander and more majestic, and there are acts of creativity that cannot be repeated, almost unique...but the general 'technological progress' is more complicated in terms of Middle-earth....it's not a clear cut process of development but rather cycles, civilizations rise and fall and achieve great things...obviously the more the world ages, the more the 'general enthropy' or decay or whatever we will call it, things pass that are harder to replicate because they are works of art, unique expressions of the artist, not to mention there is also this sort of the closer to the 'divine' light and knowledge granted by the Valar the more 'advanced' feel...Elves of Aman are able to create magnificen civilization with works that the later ages cannot easily replicate because of the teachings of the Valar. Elven civilization in Middle-earth is in decline as those who have that knowledge pass away over the sea or get destroyed in various wars, disasters and so on. But obviously the 'human civilizations' can also benefit from some of the teachings...Numenor rises to be the greates of the men's cultures...it's descendants lose much of that knowledge etc. As the Third Age is a sort of decline dark ages of that culture.

1:40:58 you know, the sad part is that within the margins of the cannon is a second age period where salron ACTUALLY IS repentant. It is indicated that his repentance is more out of fear and shame, but repentant none the less. There actually is a place within cannon for this moment of indecision. There's a lot that could be done here, but they literally just go with the badboy hunk. I also think that, as a concept, Adar is a cool original character with a cool backstory. The first orc? That makes him one of the eldest elves. That lends a weight to his existence that is never touched upon here. The idea that the orcs, whilst Morgoth is unsealed and no other great evil is ascendant, have a short period of self determination, and yet are still characteristically evil, is a FASCINATING idea. AND IT ALL FITS IN THE MARGINS OF CANNON, BUT THEY BLOW IT! Personally I think adar would have been a cool idea for a post RotK story that is completely extra-cannonical.

I like how Sauron can just take on various forms of people in front of Galadriel and she hesitates like "oh, i can't kill him, he's a good guy! You cannot simply alloy Mithril. The fact he hasn't done it yet means he hasn't done it yet. I know, such revelations are a shock to the mental giants that write rings of power. Metallurgy is very complicated, it takes quite a lot of effort to figure out the right metals and proportions of those metals, or perhaps not EVEN metals at all, to get a product that can perform whatever task you need it for. In order to create an alloy of Mithril, you would need quite a lot of Mithril. You can't just toss it into some steel or silver and expect it to work perfectly first time, while also just so happening to be using just the right amount that you have to stretch into functional pieces that you need. This is actually a really good way of solving problems like are rampant in Star Wars. Star Wars has a bunch of bullshit metals like, if we're talking most recently, Cortosis. A metal that useful would be everywhere, and Smilo has a substantial source of it, yet only made one helmet and a gauntlet out of the stuff, rather than a full suit, making the Jedi Hunter immune to Jedi, since in Disney canon it even blocks the force. The correct way to introduce a material like this is to make the actual base metal borderline useless. Instead what you do is you get Cortosis, and you mix it with something else, iron even, but the twist is you need a LOT of the Cortosis for the alloy to turn out correctly. So from a hefty vein of Cortosis, you can only actually forge a couple things. Now each vein of Cortosis would be VERY valuable, and it would explain why this stuff isn't all over the galaxy, because the formula to make it is absurdly inefficient in its use of the most scarce ingredient. Disney writers aren't nearly intelligent enough to do that though. In this, he's just assuming that if he sprinkles some Mithril into another metal, the resulting alloy will be perfect to make his rings. Really it's just as likely to create an alloy that EXPLODES when it contacts water. Or the magical properties can all be drained out of the Mithril and made useless. Or it becomes SO powerful it kills anyone who tries to touch it! You can't know with magical metals. The writers are actually SO retarded they correctly made Celebrimbor not suggest alloying the Mithril, but NOT because he doesn't have enough Mithril to find a functional formula, but because the MASTER ELVEN SMITH didn't think of it! I hate this fucking show.

Worst aspect of Celebrimbor not knowing anything about alloys is then the Elvens instantly went from Copper tools and weapons to Iron instead of having a Bronze Age. Or even the idea of Bronze would be both because they don’t know how to mix Copper and Tin. The Palantiri were created by Feanor, and basically let one person with a palantir to make zoom calls to other palantiri. They don't show the past or future. I think the writers of RoP thought the palantiri were corrupting in some way, because they misunderstood the movies. Saruman was corrupted by talking with Sauron through his palantir, but not the palantir itself. It was Sauron. They weren't crystal balls, they were closer to fiberoptic cable.

Bravo, Platoon. This series on The Rings of Power has become one of the greatest pieces of writing criticism on KZbin. You've done a fantastic job displaying why the show fails on an adaptation level, and by it's own rules. Amazon accomplished the impossible, and made a franchise installment worse than the Star Wars sequels. The Rings of Power is my go to example of a show made by people who fundamentally misunderstand the material they're adapting. Their values and worldview are diametrically opposed to Tolkien's. But instead of humbling themselves, and setting aside their own personal beliefs and politics to faithfully adapt another's work, they instead hijack Tolkien's work, and use it as a vessel for their own convictions and agendas The reaction to this show has been encouraging however, yes there is a group of clapping seals who love this show regardless of how dreadful it is, but I've seen a lot of blowback against this show, and I think it's a testament to the Tolkien fanbase. Tolkien fans are, on average, very well read and intelligent people, they have very little patience for the type of writing the Rings of Power contains. I look forward to your analysis of season 2, keep up the good work Platoon, and God bless.

I would like to report a consideration of mine: ever since I learned that this series would be set in the second era, with the forging of the rings of power, I thought it could be an excellent opportunity to talk about what Tolkien had left mostly in the background of his narration. That is, to give greater space to those populations of men who, both in the books and in the previous transpositions, were aligned with Sauron. In short, it was an opportunity to insert nuances into the Easterlings and Haradrim, in order to show how within these hordes there were actually factions inclined to listen to the call of power, and others who instead rejected it, choosing to ally themselves with elves and numeroeans. The premises were already there (just think of the arrogance that the Numenoreans will later develop towards the Haradrim and which will be one of the reasons used by Sauron to foment them against Gondor), it was enough to have a little courage and break away from the land more slippery to have a narrative that focused more on these human populations, leaving elves and dwarves in the background. Instead, what was achieved? Well, certainly not a good series, even if it goes beyond adherence to the writings (and the fact that in the various pre-season 1 interviews, there was mention of wanting to improve another person's work, is always a red flag of impressive dimensions). Indeed, let's just say that compared to the source material and considering the previous film trilogies, this series is unworthy of any praise.

Elves not only knew alloys but also magic. The door to moria that you mention for example is also magical. The rings of power directors could not come up with a new magical systems or were not allowed to use the one implied by Tolkien -- the one using verses or songs, I think.

As I continued through this, a thought occurred to me. They used that first tavern scene with Clearance Aisle Don Lemon to paint those waiting for the Promised King with the same brush as Trump supporters. In so doing, they've painted Sauron (who in Tolkien's lore is evil) as Donald Trump himself. I would not go so deep as to say that Galadriel is an analog or stand-in for Hillary Clinton or Kamala Harris, but she is certainly supposed to be a character opposed to his evil. However, the show also portrays Sauron/Halbrand as a sympathetic working man who's pushed into tyranny out of necessity and/or reverence to the words and faith bestowed upon him by Galadriel. In their own desire to draw allegory and parallel to real life politics, they have made Donald Trump a good guy by their ham-fisted attempt to draw parallel between him and "The Promised King" the Southlanders believe in.

I always got the impression that the Istari were forbidden to match Sauron strength for strength also because of the destructive nature of the war of wrath which literally sunk a continent, and the Valar couldn’t let that happen again, even if on a smaller scale. 04:00 - My enjoyment of the Lord of the Rings movies somehow diminishes as they go along. I loved the first, had issues with the second, and had LOTS of issues with the third. Indeed, they left out too much. Killing off Saruman like he was a nobody and leaving out the Scouring of the Shire was a mistake. Yes, would have made the movie longer, but it had a message that Tolkien himself learned after he came back from Germany - you can never go back to the old way you lived. Some of war and the evils you experienced will follow you. And its effects will have changed your homeland too. Also, it gave a chance for the Hobbits to show that they are now experienced heroes, warriors and leaders, that they can resolve their own problems even when wizards and kings are not behind them to help.
