Located in the Silver Valley of Idaho’s Panhandle region, Silver Mountain Bike Park overlooks Interstate 90 and the tiny town of Kellogg. This bike park is a bit of a sleeper in the sense that many people outside the neighboring riding communities have never heard of it. Despite being voted the #1 best bike park in the Northwest four years in a row, most of the people we’ve talked to in our travels had never been, or heard of Silver Mountain. Although we’re probably going to ruffle some feathers from local riders who love this park’s under-the-radar vibe, we’d be remiss if we didn’t say this park has some incredibly fun and challenging terrain that riders will truly love.
Silver Mountain has one of the longest gondolas in the world and the longest in North America covering a distance of 3.1 miles. Total elevation gained on the massive gondola is 3,400 feet while a second chair services another section of the mountain and provides riders with a quick turnaround to shred 800 vertical feet on several trails of various levels. Many beginning riders spend time on the Chair 3 zone and get comfortable on the mellower trails before tackling the full 3,400-foot descent back to the village. For comparison Whistler Bike Park’s elevation change from the Garbanzo zone to the village is roughly 3,800 feet and the lower Fitzsimmons zone which houses crowd favorites like A-Line, Dirt Merchant and Schleyer drop just over 1,100 feet of vert. Needless to say, Silver Mountain has the terrain to challenge the greats. Now it’s just about adding to the infrastructure.
About 40 gravity-oriented trails wind down Silver Mountain and funnel riders into downtown Kellogg where a short and scenic pedal back to the gondola gives visitors a unique perspective of this town and Dave Smith’s impressive collection of new Dodge trucks and cars. After a pedal through downtown riders pass by the small pumptrack and camp-friendly parking lot before returning to the Morning Star Lodge and Gondola Village for another ride back to the top. We’d suggest grabbing a huckleberry lemonade from Noah’s for the long ride back up.
LODGING AND ON-SITE AMENITIES
Kellogg is a quiet town with a rich mining history. Over the years mining jobs and revenue have slowed due to environmental protection and northern Idaho has shifted focus to more recreational avenues to support communities and locals, well that and Dave Smith’s inescapable grasp on everything from car dealerships to repair shops and vehicle storage. While the town is small, there are plenty of places to stay in the form of camping, Airbnb, motels and the very nice Morning Star Lodge.

8:54 If you're looking for another hidden gem in Kellogg a 5 min pedal away from the gondola base: Humdinger burgers. Get the jalepeno burger. I have memories of being like 10yo eating there. It's a time capsule.

I had a good time there - looking forward to going back now that I'm more confident in my rides! The full experience all the way back down to the town was awesome, if not exhausting. But I popped a tire on PayDay (green) cause it was crazy rocky that day/time of year. Walking down bike patrol passed and was like "oh yeah, you WILL pop a tire here" -_-

They have technical trails, looking at your frankenbeans, but it’s about finding the flow in the trails, and learning the smooth lines. I agree it’s rocky, I even blew a tire running 30 psi, but most green and blue trails aren’t super choppy. Also you have been their enough until you get kick out of the local night life... 😂

😂Not even sure what you coulda done to earn that! haha. Frankenbeans is definitely a blast! And a trail we forgot about sometimes honestly...dang. We wanna go back already.

Haha😂... If you watched the beginning of our eMTB Roundup videos, my trusty can of Murray's Pomade made an appearance. Based on all the comments and questions about the hair, we thought it'd be a fun little joke. Murray's orange tin but after 12 years of use, I've started using this a bit more www.murrayspomade.com/beeswax/Murrays-BEESWAX

LOL @ 9:28 tight and flowy is a bit of an oxymoron. Yeah Silver Mountain is about at raw as it gets. There's not much flow on the mountain until you really start to open up and let off the brakes.
@TheLoamWolf
@TheLoamWolf 3 жыл бұрын
Well, we'd disagree. There are lots of tight and flowy trails. It's a different kind of flow, just like different types of dancing have different movements that are in tune with the music, different types of trails have different types of flow... Some of our favorite trails zig and zag between tight trees and have quick snappy turns. Then again Drew will go to Whistler for a week and not hit A-Line once... So what does he know?
@lokmtb8503
@lokmtb8503 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheLoamWolf No need to be defensive my friend. Did you watch the clip at that time mark? It's just funny to see Drew call something tight and flowy and then watch the scenes that they cut to are chunky and gnarly while Drew exclaims "ooooohhhh god" and "I think there are some roots on this trail". while riding a trail that's a rooty techy trail.
@Noondog
@Noondog 3 жыл бұрын
LW isn’t being defensive, they just said they disagree haha c’mon. I think a trail can absolutely be both tight and flowy. That is, a trail can be anything and everything simultaneously. One persons tech or loose is another persons flow, and vice versa. It’s silly to argue what a trail is or isn’t when one persons opinion is as valid as another. My rule of thumb; if the trail has a hand-built berm somewhere, the trail has “flow” at least for that moment. That’s my opinion.

Better than whistler?
@lokmtb8503
@lokmtb8503 3 жыл бұрын
Not better at all. It's a place that will push you because of how janky and raw it is and it's a lot of fun if you have the skills to ride there. Just don't expect to be going down big well made jump lines. When Drew said it was voted best bike park in North America he meant that it got voted best bike park in the NW of the USA in 2018. Silver mountain Didn't hold that spot in last years vote Big Sky MT got #1 in 2019.
@TheLoamWolf
@TheLoamWolf 3 жыл бұрын
@@lokmtb8503 @LōK MTB Thanks for clarifying. Yes @Peyton we meant best in North America for MTB Parks survey. Better than Whistler? We'd say not. But it's a pretty rad park and while we wouldn't say it's janky, it definitely is raw!
@kylecomstock2426
@kylecomstock2426 3 жыл бұрын
If you can ride Silver’s jankyness (which I like!) whistler’s perfectly manicured trails are no problem. If ya like it RAW, Silver’s your spot.
