Great years. Thanks for the memories especially the one in Staubachs last regular season game in dec. 79, in ridiculous dramatic Staubach fashion in a huge comeback that won the division. Staubach to Hill on an 8 yard redzone pass put us ahead and sealed the victory and then held off a last ditch effort from the skins which was ferocious. We wanted it more tho.

1st - LUV your work ... 2nd ..I see before I start it's a 16 min video. Heads up .. I am a Landry super fan. 16 min???? #ComeOnMan ... you can barely cover his wardrobe with that and he only wore one hat :) I will be adding to this comment as the video progresses .... (spoiler alert .. he nailed it) U impressed me right away with the nuance about Landry losing his speed. You touched lightly on that effect. If I may .. it impacted everything about his game. Bob Hayes was in his sights for a reason. Jim Lee Howel was a genius often spending his days in the office while his two coordinators fought over practice time for their respective units. Little known fact: When Lombardi left the Giants Lombardi asked for (and received) a copy of Landry's defensive playbook. Pointing out Landry's love for the offense was key (well done) ... and also why he did not ask for Lombardi's (six-play) playbook. 'Landry believed the shift ....' This lag concept led to Bob Lilly sitting in team meetings, turning his hand knife-edge and striking between his eyes in repetition the entire meeting. He was doing it to train himself not to blink to alleviate the 'lag' from getting hit and refocusing. #NextLevelShit Landry didn't know the safety was too deep before he called the play .. BUT .. he did envision it via the earlier defensive responses ergo dialing it up. I remember this game. Per-the-norm you give credit where it is due for the shotgun offense ie: not Landry. Well done. Drawing attention to his nuances? Priceless. Way to call focus on the shovel pass!!! The Landry-Reeves-Shanahan connection is well done. Wish more were aware. Coaching Tree: ... thank you .. aware of some but in no way was I aware of the breadth. Thank you. 16 min is not enough? Hmmm .. Perhaps my fav video you have ever done. Props.

I believe his greatest accomplishment was creating a unique ETHOS with the Cowboys. The way the team played and operated were more important than a mere focus on winning and coaching a collection of players. This meant that a Cowboys culture emerged with winning being a by-product of that. People have always hated the Cowboys more than any team exactly because they possessed a culture that set them apart...and above...all other NFL franchises.
@redmustangredmustangАй бұрын
The Cowboys just had the right people at the right time to start the franchise. Thankfully ownership stuck with Landry and things DID turn around. It was also great scouting by Gil Brandt by getting players from unknown FCS and black colleges. From the 1960's up to the early 80's, the Cowboys were always competitive and were either in a Super Bowl or an NFC Championship. As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end. Cowboys had bad draft picks, players were getting older, Tom Landry's offense and the flex defense was getting passed over by the early 80's. It's just sadly the Landry Cowboys just couldn't adjust and by 1988 things really hit rock bottom with that 3-13 record. I just wish Landry could have retired after the 1988 season. At least Jerry wouldn't have had to be the bad guy and force Landry out which needed to happen.

Exactly right. Nobody sharper than Landry and the PERFECT personality for America's team. Don't overlook Schramm & Brandt & an owner (Murchison years at least) who just backed off & let football guys make football decisions. I catch crap continually as some old head hater because of what I think of Jones especially his treatment of the GOAT. He got lucky with Jimmy Johnson, but couldn't be hands off. Every time I see some stupidity like: not allowing Romo to reclaim his job; drafting Taco just ahead of TJ Watt or Fehoko just ahead of Herbig or going Elliott plus a cripple instead of Ramsey & Henry of sticking with his 8-8 puppet all those years I am SO happy to have grown up a fan of Don & Staubach & Hayes & Reeves & Rentzel & Dorsett & The Pearsons & T Hill & & Rayfield & Nate Newton & Donavon & Lilly & LeRoy & Cornell & Renfro & Harris & Waters & White & Harvey & Pugh & Andrie & Too Tall. With THIS video I realize that yeah I'm right. Those WERE the glory days. That WAS America's Team. My heroes WERE the greatest. But even though I KNEW Landry was a genius & I still have those 2 old rotten paperbacks Staubach 's Time Enough to Win & Landry. Still now I realize though I can still probably recite most if the 2 deep O & D from like 66ish through 83ish it was THE SCHEMES. I actually grew up LOVING The Flex Defense & The Shotgun & Motion offense more than even those players & why I continue to double down & say even though it pains me that until that idiot Jones gets his hands off of it my favorite team will win NATHAN. Just lately seeing Herbig & TJ pound Panicky overrated overpaid Dak & force TWO redzone turnovers & Henry steamroll our D...KNOWING that idiot Jones coulda made up for his 2016 draft stupidity when King Henry actually WANTED to be a Cowboy just THIS PAST off season I could only shake my head. The uniform & even then I like the silver pants & away jerseys silver helmet & blue star NO need to play all the throwback & alternate games other teams play when we already have THE best ... remember we considered it bad luck to wear our home jerseys at one time. We were like 4-3 over a span of several years & teams like St. Louis used to wear their aways at home just to force us to wear blue...& then those STILL awesome cheerleaders. At least Jones hasn't messed with the hot pants but SO sad when those are the 2 things a fan has to hang his hat on. Thank you Logical Cowboy for reminding me of the good ol' days & of geniuses & heroes & the actual eyes for talent that turned option QBs & MLBs into HoF WRs & DTs & combing those tiny places like Fort Valley State & Ouachita & the HBCUs including those NOT named Grambling or Jackson State before ANYBODY & turning THAT talent into HoFers too even employing computers to find OUR kind of guys...and even in his later years going BACK to Grambling to get Walls when the NFL was giving up on The Eddie Robinson School... & of course Landry getting Irvin The Playmaker in his final draft. Knute Rockne was doing shifting before the snap back in the 1920s. It was so effective that it prompted a rules change. So I'm not sure Landry was exactly the first to come up with such an idea.
@thelogicalcowboyАй бұрын
@NigelIncubatorJones Correct. But if you listen to those old clips you can hear the audibles. His shift was more so of a basic audible to switch to another play. The landry shift was inherently different. He did his just to manipulate the defense. To catch them off guard in timing alignments or to hide blocking schemes. No one had ever used these concepts as a means of deception until Landry arrived. The same for the shotgun. Teams before landry ran the shotgun out of a running formation. They would occasionally pass the ball from this formation. But most of the time it was a running formation. Landry's shotgun was mainly a passing formation on passing downs where they would occasionally run the ball. No one ever made the shotgun a passing formation before landry.
@NigelIncubatorJonesАй бұрын
@@thelogicalcowboy Given how carefully choreographed and timed that it was, however, it still seems to me to fit the idea of getting inside the decision loop of the defense's brains. The Rockne shift was snapping the ball pretty much the moment the backs finished their shift. Interestingly, the Kansas City Chiefs ran the Rockne Shift once or twice a few years ago. It was fascinating to see it resurface. But what is old becomes new again, like Landry with the shotgun, or the Dolphins with the wildcat a while back. It's what makes football a fascinating game. What was revolutionary decades ago (e.g. the Dolphins' 53 defense) seems rather quaint and simplistic by today's standards.
@komradkolonelАй бұрын
The offense and defense of the Bears during their glory days under Mike Ditka were basically a copy of the Cowboys under Tom Landry. Of course he was a player in Dallas his last year of his career and he served as an assistant coach under Landry. The only thing that was really different was that gimmicky 46 defense of Buddy Ryan's. That defense worked well for a short time, until its fatal flaw was exposed and exploited. Then it went the way of the dodo. Buddy Ryan wasn't anywhere near the defensive mind that Landry was.

He was moving to the big mauling type linemen and it began with Nate and Tuinei moving to offense, Crefotd Kerr, Zimmerman. Jimmy takes to much credit. When TL saw Troy workout at Texas Staduthe week of the Cotton Bowl he said, I waited 28 yearsto get the QB I always wanted. Jimmy did Troy a HUGE disservice when he let go ...for reasons I will never know receivers like Kelvin Edwards and Ray Alexander...bith who could play very well. Troy would have had Irvin (until injury) Edwards (who was killing Pittsburgh WK 1 1988 until he broke a bone in his leg, Ray Alexander who was amazing in the slot and Kelvin Martin. Doug Cosbie would not have been let go ...instead Troy was given THE WORST tight end in Cowboys history Steve Foldom who was 3rd string for the 1980 eagles. Yes Cosbir had a back issue but could have given us one more year. We would not have traded Walker, However Tom would have turned it around just the same. One of my favorite Cowboys games I have on dcd ( over 800) was the 89 preseason finale vs Houston. Both team played their starters and Troy as usual was a bloody mess, blood all over his jersey looking like the spirit of 76...and hechad Edwards, Alexander , Irvin, K-Mart..threw forco e 300 yards and the Oilers had a playoff team. All of a suddenhalf the guys Troy worked with are gone for James Dixon?? Dennis McKinnon and Sheppard who Troy got very close with,.,...Btw. Everyone killing Guyton right now....Erik Williams rookie season they put him on the left vs the Cards (91 @Texas Stadium) Well Emmiit scored 4 TD 's howevevTroy was pummeled all day. Again a bloody mess...Erik gave up 4 sacks, they moved him to RT and he should be in the ROH/HOF....HOW IS HE NOT??? Even after the car wreck he destroyed Racist Reggie. . Landry and then Gil Brandt and his contacts to small black colleges....Tex in his ways....all 3 were so far ahead in every aspect of ...Ermal Allen was the man you saw talking to Dandy Don. I IMPLORE EVERYONE to read the folowing books: Dallas Cowboys and the NFL (1970), Dallas Cowboys Pro or Con by Sam Blair. The Dallas Cowboys: An Illustrated History (1981) and both Steve Perkins book (Next YeArs Champ and Winning The Big One also We Love You Cowboys Bob StJohn. My Cowboys librayr print and video is massive . Believe me if nit for the Landry Era....we still benefit from that era in huge ways. . especially read Dallas Cowboys and the NFL. It truly is an extension of this video. As the Cowboys do now on the freedom the dot.com podcasts have, this book was shocking and revealing when it wa released.
