As far as standards from the American Songbook are concerned,Monk is the absolute master of reinvention.

Thelonious Monk... an incredible interpretation of a beautiful song. It bring me memories of "Hannah and Her Sisters" (where it is played on the piano). This is sublime...

Notice the rhythm...the piano is a percussion instrument....subtle syncopated stuff here....this requires both hemispheres of a brilliant musical mind [Edit: Also those crushed asymmetric almost but not quite atonal seconds...wow].

@raybobus Feel the same way, What a beautiful album this is. And the postage stamp cover is just great! The story is Riverside, afraid the public was going to be scared or frightened by the "weird High Priest of Bop" decided to have him play Ellington and standards on his first 2 albums so the public could ease on in. Of course, the standards album led into 3 of the greatest albums ever made: Brilliant Corners, Thelonious Himself, and Monk's Music. Monk added so much beauty to this world.

And the beautiful thing about Orrin Keepnews' very smart strategy was that, it not only showed that Monk could really play, but he retained the integrity of the melody while not sacrificing his own unmistakable style. The jazz public then realized what they had.And today he remains one of the main influences in jazz, and even other facets of popular music.

@raybobus Couldn't agree with you more. Monk will always be enjoyed as long as great music is listened to. It's funny how one's musical tastes change. Just recently I've grown to really like a punk album that I really didn't care for for 25 years. You might be interested in a few comments I left on other Monk songs. On Misterioso [it's the 1st one shown with a black and white photo of Monk at a piano] and I Surrender Dear [it's from the Brilliant Corners lp cover photo] Just some of my feelings.

What can I say, Monk is Monk, the rest is the same. Who says Pettiford is not a bass player and Art Bdeki is not a drummer?)

This ART was meant for those stay-up-late fora, not this BS Newport, Carmel stuff. I caught Basie, for example, in an intimate setting on Sunset Blvd. years ago and the mood was groovy. No, Newport and Carmel isn't the setting!

You know the name Thelonious Monk could pass as a punk rock or heavy metal band. Maybe change out the Th with a F. No? Love this number though.
