I hope you reconsider the skylight idea, I have a pitched roof as well, and had a similar notion to bring in more light. The following winter I discovered that the cold and ice played hell with the window seals after a winter of troublesome leaks, the next spring found out the water damage meant the trusses had to be replaced and a new roof put on. $30,000 later, I wish I had just bought LED lights. Good luck with the new workspace!

I just wanted to stop in and tell you how much my mother and I enjoy this new channel of yours! We are both makers, and we love anything to do with treasure hunting, upcycling, assemblage, or repurposing found objects, so your mudlarking channel has been a favorite of ours for a while now. But we also have a keen interest in home improvement, gardening, sustainable practices, animals and nature, and of course, your beautiful Scotland, (we live in Florida) and so we were thrilled when you started this channel! We really enjoy sharing in your adventures as you settle into your magical Scottish homestead, and we love how you work so well together! You somehow manage to make even the most mundane projects look enjoyable, and we've thoroughly enjoyed every single video, from the assembly of the peackock shelter and the changing of the tire, to the hatching of the schwoos and the cultivation of your amazing wildflower patch. (and we can't wait to see the wysteria over your door come into bloom!) You're living the life most of us dream of, but for one reason or another, haven't been able to achieve, so we turn to channels like this for inspiration and motivation. So,thank you for taking us along for the ride and letting us live vicariously through you! You're both just lovely, and we are rooting for you every step of the way! P.S. I just watched your video about the felled horse chestnut tree, and heard you mention something about the two feuding families that once lived on the bordering properties. My maternal grandfather was an Armstrong, and we've traced his lineage back to Scotland. So, who knows? It may have been my ancestors who once lived on that property! 🙂

Do you have access to a table saw because you could cut your slats from bed frame and from desk you dismantled to create more shelves to store your crafting stuffs. just a suggestion really but repurposing is what you do isn't it 😊 also with mirror you could use it as backing for your shelves so you can locate items on back of shelves when hunting for that perfect piece. frame mirror and then attach it on back!

Hello ladies! I'm dying to tell you my secret for getting things done - which my kids think is hilarious but it works for me. I'm a senior now so as you can guess I have a few aches and pains. When I need to get busy I don my "supersuit" which consists of overalls ,gloves, ugly shoes and most importantly, knee pads . You will be surprised how much more you can do because you will get on your knees more (rather than bending) and your grip is much better with gloves! I look pretty funny but it really works mentally as well to get you more prepared to do the dirty work. Just felt like passing this along because my supersuit is really super haha!

@Objective-Observer

The first thing I noticed was the lack of light, and upright wall space. I would suggest 'tract' lighting with moveable light heads, so you can always have a light directly above you. That roof line is too shallow to get into it to run electrical wires for lights. The tract lighting system is a long 'tube' so the wire can be connected from a wall. The actual light heads can be on a Goose Neck support, so they bend any direction you want. That would be the least expensive, labor wise, for getting light into that room. IF you have that style of light fixture on that side of the pond. The Main Light fixture, again, I would opt for a multi bulb round modern chandlier style fixture; the more light bulbs you have in that room, the better the light. Talk with paint expert for options that will reflect the most light around that room. Bright white in a high gloss comes to mind, but with this plaster, that can affect what you put on that surface. Tables/ work surfaces need to be on the long 'half wall,' with the tract light above. That will give you plenty of space for many different types of projects and work spaces. Look at garage tool storage ideas that hang on the walls, to utilize the space on the wall above the tables... that will help keep the table tops uncluttered. The corner of the shorter half wall is way too dark for working. THAT is where you store supplies and where I would put your repurposed shelving from the bed. Again a tract lighting system on that slanted roof with goose necks light bulb heads to direct the light where you need it. Tall Storage on the wall across from the window. Alex, my humblest aplogies, but you do NOT want a work space under that window. That puts light IN your face and makes it harder for your eyes to focus ON the project in front of you, because that project would be in shadow. Ask me how I know this...lol. I would reupholster that that two seat couch and put THAT under the window. That will give you a place to sit and inspect your work under natural light, because the light will come from behind you. You can also put your knees on the couch and look out the window. You need a comfy place to sit for breaks, afternoon tea in the work room, to help keep your brain fresh and rest your hands, shoulders, neck, arms and back. The French Desk, I would put that in front of the two seat couch as an Inspection, planning and Sketching Area, and place for afternoon tea. This will give you a very comfy and stylish seating area that will catch the eye when you enter the room. The utilitarian purposes of the room of the room, are to the sides almost out of sight. The floor I would sand it down and put a natural oil finish on it. I would add a cheap, solid color room rug under the work table to catch the pieces that fall, and protect the floor. The Gaming chair- just sell it. It can be readjusted to sit up straight, and if you find it comfortable; make a chair slip cover to hide the racing theme. Thank you, ladies for sharing your journey with us.

I agree with everything you described. There's no substitute for life experience, eh? 🤣🤣 If the loveseat is too low, leg extenders could be added to raise it. Also, it can be surprising how much a thorough vacuuming and upholstery shampooing can renew an old piece of furniture. 😁 Best of luck, Gail & Alex. I'm sending you tons of energy and intestinal fortitude through the ether. 😂😍😘🤗💖👍👋

@@noraleestone2859 Thank you for the kind words. It's been my experience, if you are ready to throw something in the trash; you must strip it and completely change the look. Otherwise, you wil always doubt you choice to keep it. And it might be cheaper, to simply replace that piece. I would still put a comfy seating and the desk in front of the window. I come from a family of tradesmen in the US. My grandfather was a carpenter; his brother was a plumber. My spouse studied carpentry, and their father was an electrician. Consequentially, I've learned from many people's experience. Well, and my own hand work business.

When I was a child we lived in Uganda and when we went on holiday or any long cross country journey, if we got stuck in the middle of nowhere a man always seemed to appear out of nowhere and help change a tyre or pump one up. They always checked the air pressure by kicking the tyre and when we finally got to a garage and checked they were always spot on.

Mattresses and sofas are just synthetic materials and it really does make me feel ill binning stuff for that reason 😑 Here is a top tip though, for the upright supports for storage racks and shelves, those flat packed chip board furniture pieces are great cut down and, painted and reused, with the proper wood for the shelves. My Dad, a mechanic, used to kick the tires to test for a few things actually. One if the lug nuts were tight enough. If not the tired would move a bit. Two if the tire was inflated enough. If it gave under the pressure of your foot then it needed air. Low air pressure could cause a few problems if left for too long. And three, to make sure the tires were in good shape. You'd be surprised how many times the tires look good but a little kick reveals that it is in fact rotted. Most guys have seen their mechanic do that and don't really know why they are doing it but repeat it themselves anyway.

Sorry but, I was cracking up at the tire escapade. We took off today for a Sat. adventure, mainly I wanted to go to a quilt shop for fabric and we were going to eat lunch at a very good buffet. 15 miles down the road, the tire pressure monitor went off, conveniently we were near a gas station so put air in the back drivers side tire and went on our way. Another 20 miles down the road, I had to use the rest-room, stopped and as I walked around the front of the truck, I heard a hissing sound, looked down big screw in the tire!!! So in 33 miles, 2 tires. We changed that one as it was visibly losing air. Found one tire place open 9 minutes away. Several hours later we finally got them fixed. Icing on the cake.....the first tire actually had a nail AND a screw in it. 3 punctures!! Well that day didn't go as planned. LOL

I learned one thing having had a flat on my truck. Always carry a 4 way long wrench and regular jack. Changing a tire is much easier with these 2 items.

Back in the before-time, there were "hub caps". When one changed a tyre, one could put the nuts into it until needed.

Well done, Ladies! Alex mentioned you have all antiques in your home -- I am a avid/rabid antique lover and I thought it would be a thought to perhaps highlight an individual piece and discuss a brief history. I realize you may not wish to trapse the masses through your personal spaces, but perhaps a piece at a time for historical information purposes? Loving the videos. xx

That little sofa looks so cosy. I would give it a good cleaning up so it's not smelly and put a slip cover over it and it would be like brand new. I could see myself sitting cosy for hours crafting on that sofa.

Hiya from Monika in Australia. You two are amazing. Its mind blowing what a couple of woman can achieve in a day. I'm widowed and my hubby and dad were both builders, so I picked up alot by helping and watching. 11yrs on my own and sometimes doing it hard, those skills have helped me big time. Yr a great teacher Gail and Alex is so good at everything. Much love and can't wait to see how it goes. ✌😊💕

Another Great video girls, I really enjoyed it, and I couldnt stop laughing at you both doing the ceremonial kicking the car tire🤔😆😂🤣also love the floorboards and the way you said you hate the gaps between them especially when you drop things that get stuck between them, when you sand them you can keep the sawdust and mixed with resin to fill in the spaces then another quick sand before vanishing them, it is a thing people do as it stops draughts and dust buildup, just google how to fill in gaps between floorboards with sawdust? and there will be directions online or even on youtube, they do this in school halls, french chateaus, and obviously peoples homes, but I can not wait to see you both now fixing up this room it will look great as your craft space to work in❤👍🏼

I am doing the same thing here in America. I am changing my guest bedroom into a craft room. Right now my garage is my craft room. In the summer it is to hot and winter it is to cold. So good luck on your renovation, I don't have as much work as you do

Surprisingly satisfying just watching someone else working. My wife has 'Crafting Room Envy' , especially as hers is about a quarter the size of yours, but we are both excited to see how your project develops. From experience I am sorry to say that you will have absolutely no success trying to get any financial return from your Local Council regarding your wheel, I found that if they are able to show that they have a system of checking the roads in place you have no hope. Even if they know that the pot hole was there 😪 I really enjoyed this video, thank you.

I’m impressed with your tyre changing skills ladies. That is going to be an awesome craft room. Hard to believe there isn’t any kind of a heating system in the house, living in Canada central heating is a necessity. I have a very vocal cat too. Her name is Lily.

You girls do work hard,I love it. I was the same way when I was young. Now I can still garden somewhat. Walk the dog. Watercolor and slow stitch. That’s about all. I love watching you mudlark and wish I could be there with you. So much fun. Thank you for all your videos.❤️🌺💕🌵🌲😎from Arizona

I love how you didn't let a bump in the road deter your craft room project! You are going to LOVE a dedicated room for your projects and having everything together and close at hand. The relationship between you two is great to watch no matter what you do. Even changing a tire. I can't wait to see what you come up with for the next video. In the meantime I'll continue to chuckle about your tire kicking.

What a disaster to the car tire. I hope they fix that pot hole in the road before another car's tire gets wrecked. What a job in removing carpet from room. Can't wait to see how it all goes.

Don't buy electric oil filled radiators. They can cost more to maintain them and very expensive to run yr meter will be whizzing around very quickly it will be like running 5 iron's at one time, and blow air heaters are not economical either can cost asmuch as oil filled radiators too
