Rich, just got my first laser yesterday and have been learning LightBurn by watching KZbin videos and trial and error (so far, I haven't caught any furniture on fire). I was engraving fairly small pieces (about 1" by 1") and was pulling my hair out trying to figure out how to get the laser module / beam to return to the same spot when there was a new piece to be engraved. The first project came out perfect, but darned if I could get that laser module / beam back to where it needed to be on subsequent pieces. OMG! I'm old, my hair is already falling out, so I really don't need to be ripping it out by the roots. I stumbled across your KZbin video (yeah, you are a bit chatty, but we'll just call that being overly social?) and I will be forever grateful for you explaining how to establish an ORIGIN and ways to reestablish the ORIGIN. I’ve always been fascinated by quantum physics. But, I am an absolute right brained individual and promptly fell asleep in trying to read books about quantum physics. So I never got the benefit of reading those books. But then, out comes Down the Rabbit Hole movie; a movie about quantum physics. As I watched this, all of my lights went on and I immediately understood so much of what I had previously read. I experience the same “lights going on” phenomenon when watching your videos. Thanks again Rich! I read the F1 doc as you suggested but couldn't get my head around it! My husband has been an analyst programmer for 35+years and one of his favourite sayings is "Shit in Shit out!" and always says "Make KZbin your friend". Hey Rich, I’ve been using my laser(XTool D1Pro 10w) for approximately 2 months now and I’ve learnt so much from you and your channel. I just came across this video of laser positioning and again I have to make more room in my brain for useful info. Like the elderly gent you mentioned, I to lack certain skills with computers and laser programs. I do so much appreciate fellows such as yourself that are sooo willing to share your knowledge. I did use remote assistance once before fixing our tankless water heater and wow it was fantastic learning by “hands on “ method. PS. Hello Louisiana Hoby Guy I just bought a Sculpfun S6 and assembled it yesterday before heading to work. Never ventured into the laser life before but I am excited to get started..watched soooo many tutorials whenever I can and also listened with one ear bud while working(I'm a CNC Milling machine operator) And I'm a sponge whether I understand or not of what I hear and see; I want to learn as much as I can! Heat won't damage it Jill, but humidity will. Definitely make and enclosure or bag it when not in use in a thick garbage bag.

It's kinda funny, I had just gone through all of the Lightburn docs and have to say, everything is in there. They were a great help in getting me going with my new CNC machine and understanding how the coordinates really work.I'm learning my machine for both CNC and the laser side purely for my own enjoyment (at age 61) and am having a blast learning and with videos like yours it really is satisfying to make progress and have things work the way they are supposed to..BTW, I only started down this path this past spring with a Genmitsu 6050...Fun stuff for sure, I should have done this years ago ! I need to do some coasters tonight, so will try this method. I should also burn the grid on my spoil board, and ensure my laser is "fastened" to the spoil board so it doesn't move, right? YOU ROCK!

18:24 I do something similar to the framing square. But I have a honeycomb that I always leave in place. Instead of a framing square I screw a 12 inch square piece of 1/8 inch plywood in the corner of the honeycomb. I then draw a 12 inch square with the top left corner at the absolute position of X = 20 & Y = 20. This leaves an "L" shape corner which is perfectly square with the laser and at the exact location of 20 20. Now I can put my material in the corner and draw the material and set it to a "Tool Path" and use that to center my project. Or put material in the corner and draw an array of places to put multiple blanks for coasters or anything. It is so simple in use, but hard to explain.

Hey Rich, Thanks for your time and great tutorial. could you expand this tutorial for the YRC Ortur Roller with your other tutorial *Understanding Lightburn Origins, Absolute Coordinates & Settings!*. I had power outage while engraving LM2 pro and YRC chuck, but I was not able to continue the job. probably because I was using "current position". well I am not sure on how to use the other positioning modes when I have my rotary enabled.

I got a corner bracket 3d printed for the same reason. Having a physical stop to line up 0/0 takes a lot of the headache away and for the simple solution of a framing square and some double sided tape it is well worth it! Too often people just think they can drop a workpiece down and get perfect results and they are disappointed when the burn ends poorly.

I too just printed a set of corner brackets that align my honeycomb in a usable area of the 400x410 workspace my laser advertises. For instance with a pencil jig previously made, based on this video, what I'm gathering is to push the laser to the "new" origin (0,0 of the centered bed), fire it and line it up and then hit set origin along with user origin and lower left dot? Question then becomes like the elderly man you assisted, how do I re-align the jig design so I can just drop pencils in and print names? My sense tells me to make another one :-(, but my gut tells me there's a way. Thoughts?

Yes, I agree completely! As a computer engineer, it's pretty frustrating when people get spun up because "nothing is working correctly", when they simply haven't taken the time to RTFM (Read the Freakin' Manual). We tell them it's due to an ID-10-T error and then have them write that error code down on a piece of paper to remember for later. I love watching their face when they finally recognize what the code means! (IDIOT) ;-)

Great videos. I have installed a LT K-20 on my ORTUR LM2 Pro S2, and I had to move the limit switches. How does that affect Absolute Coordinates?

0/0 will be where the limit switch activates. You'll need to keep the laser from going to far to top of the Y (the amount you moved the switch) or it will hit the top rail.

You have to mount the laser to a waste board so it doesn't move. Once you've done that, you can download a grid on my free forums, in the Members Only Download section: lahobbyguy.com/bb. Then you set it to output and burn the grid on the wood. Once that's done, you select everything on the work bed in Lightburn and put it on a tool path, layer T1 or T2. You have to be on the Art Library to load them. There are two tabs, Library for settings, and Art Library for art files.

Hopefully you see this and are kind enough to answer. Your videos are FANTASTIC, they got me going. I believe I screwed up a setting...comgrow 3018 w/ laser head. It seems to reset home to the upper right, out of bounds, trips things and stops with errors. If I manually rehome the head and restart the laser it agrees 0/0 lower left is home. After cutting ANYTHING 'home' is now upper right and lower left is -299/-180. And it won't let me jog back to the lower left. If I stop it as it homes to the upper right I can jog left and right, but BOTH Y buttons jog up and away... I assume I have set something wrong in LIghtburn OR need some G code to set things right when I start up.

apparently because it can be a CnC as well the bed is in negative coords. Got it mostly figured out now..trial and error and bourbon. tomorrow is another day. if it's consistent i'll do burn/performance/focus tests and try some actual products.

Hi Rich, do you have a video on installing limit switches on a diode laser machine and how to switch or reverse the stepper motor? It's moving the laser head to the left back side of the machine where the limit switch is on the lower left side corner. Now I gotta order a new belt for my machine. I need advice badly. I'm still new to lightburn . The machine is f50 laser fumorclu 5.5w with a Makerbase V1.1 thanks for your videos they help a lot. I'm also installing lightburn Cam 500.

No, but it seems you have the origin set wrong in Lightburn. Go to the Device Settings and set the origin to the bottom left.
