For the issue/question discussed at 35:00, I think the reason criticism from our partner feels like an attack and/or earth shattering is because, as a society, we (women) are unconsciously programmed with the idea that we should be perfect. From childhood (at least in the black community) the expectation is that girls will do well in school and boys will cut up. When girl misbehave the conversation is of shock, but when boys misbehave, the messaging is ‘boys will be boys’. Then fast forward into adulthood, the message when it comes to relationships is, “What you won’t do, another will”, the existence of side chicks, strip clubs, etc.) All unconsciously creating the mindset that we must be “perfect” and we don’t measure up, there is another waiting in the wing to replace us. So, on a deeper level and even unbeknownst to us, we see criticism as not us not meeting the standard that has been placed on us all our lives, but also a possible pathway to infidelity.
@lifeofneu1438
@lifeofneu1438 4 жыл бұрын
You ain lie! I know I'm not perfect but when I called out, it feels so crushing because there's so much placed on us women from childhood. No one ever says "girls will be girls". Proverbs 31, every church mother and their advice to the women. There's a meme about women not being able to admit when we're wrong, but lowkey, a part of that is because of societal conditioning that men will make their mistakes, but we don't have that same window of grace as women.

@59:23 - Two things - 1) Yes, society did not treat Black men kindly in those days. But Black women dealt with racism as well. 2) The whole Suzie Homemaker thing was not a reality for most Black women in the 50s. A lot of them worked outside the home, too.
@nca4794
@nca4794 4 жыл бұрын
That's true, but it doesn't mean the principles and expectations to "make a home" were different just because you worked. Employed outside or working for the family inside, there was still the idea that being a good woman meant catering to the needs of the family, especially their men, first. That's why so many women in the next generation started to reject marriage and motherhood in the 60s. Plus, there's a cultural element with her family also. I grew up in a West Indian family, and making a plate is seen as showing reverence to the husband as the head of the household. I know men who expect their plate before the children have eaten. I wasn't raised in a household like that, but it's no less real than taking your shoes off at the door.
@boomboom6577
@boomboom6577 4 жыл бұрын
Facts. In fact, the majority of black women worked outside of the household after the great migration north. And the myth of the mother homemaker was facilitated by black women domestic workers who cared for the house holds of white women. And yes, to the commenter who pointed out that black women were still expected to maintain a home for their children and husband. And when people assessed the state of black America, they blamed black women for working and displacing men from the workforce AND the household. The Moynihan Report is the most glaring and influential example that.

Yes Khadeen!!!! I absolutely believe in the concept of men's jobs. I DO NOT take out the trash, shovel snow (unless ABSOLUTELY necessary), cut grass....etc. My husband & I have a very clear understanding of this. However, he doesn't cook, wash dishes, do laundry or clean the house (unless absolutely necessary) and I'm totally fine with that. Not only do I cook daily, I make his plate for him. Not because he demands it but because I choose to. He works full time AND is a full time Pastor and he takes very good care of me financially, emotionally and spiritually. This has worked for us for 30 years. To each their own!

I am always excited about any conversation had by these couples. Their authenticity and honesty is so comforting. As a single female working on herself to be a part of a lifelong partnership, I appreciate the truths they share that are applicable even in my ‘singlehood’. At 28 I wish these conversations were regular parts of my upbringing but I am elated that they are now being had and so frequently. These conversations really allow us to acknowledge the fact that there isn’t an ideal marriage; there’s just the one that works for you and your partner along with the work you both commit to putting in to make it work. Thank you guys so so much. You all just spoke to my heart, embraced my soul and sparked new paths in my mind.

This is a really good gem. I'm 53mins in and the convo about wanting vs needing help needs its own video. I often say understanding you can "be" independent is much different than trying to be "alone" and not know it. Relationships must have a give and take to make each person feel as if they contribute and not a burden, when you mentality is I can do all this by myself, you're trying to prove something to "you" and not necessarily the partner but at what cost

Yesss, Melissa....you hit the nail on the head for me & definitely shined a light on a lot of things.... "I lovvvvve understanding & hearing dynamics of different relationships.....we're all normal & going through the same things, just different in some ways....at the end of the day, we all have the same core values--to feel valued, to feel loved, to feel connected" yessss....absolutely loved this episode!!

Re: Devale's question @ 35:00 - In my experience it's been the opposite. I'm able to process issues & concerns expressed by my partner, but then when I share an issue they (majority of men I've dated) react defensively. So I would say it's an individual case by case thing, not gender. Although a woman, I resonate the most with Devale. I wonder how many men resonate more with Khadeen & Melissa, etc. I think the combination of our personalities, trauma, coping mechanisms and attachment styles have a lot to do with it. The openness of this conversation is really beautiful. This is real life. Everyone on the planet has issues and your vulnerability in sharing where you're at in navigating & working through yours is a gift for those of us on the same journey. Thank you all. #BlackLove #youlovetoseeit

I love the honesty!! I feel like people assume because there are spats the marriage isn't happy. I certainly struggle with that. Especially if one person holds grudges and never just leaves past arguments in the past.

Brangee Ellis We had a conversation and got honest and real about where we are in our marriage and we determined it was not so good . So we created a list of things we do together whether it be prayer time together , deep intimate conversation , a good friend recommended listening to this podcast and we listen together each week and share together our takeaways. It’s been amazing and has brought us closer together and more open and vulnerable .

Kay, Devale, Kevin and Melissa I love what you said: self happiness, grace, space, room and support for change and allowing each other to be self and not assuming there is one way or definition to be a husband or wife. Truth was spoken, thank you from the bottom of my heart.

This was great! I definitely walked away with some great tips to apply to my own marriage. It's great to see black couples be so honest and transparent about their relationship. Also it's great to see the positivity. 🖤 In my own life I've only see broken marriages or messy relationships so to see that there's couples like this it's inspiring and makes me hope we meet couples like this in the future. New subscriber, can't wait to watch more of these. 🖤💐

MELISSA.....when you used the cookie cutter analogy at the end, I was on the BRINK OF TEARS (I cried enough in church yesterday - I didn’t want to cry no more lol). You literally encompassed how I’ve been feeling for the past 8 years in my marriage. All I can say is I’m reclaiming my arm, leg, back, and booty and I’m gonna keep on keeping on!!! Thanks for this HEALTHY content. I love you guys!!
