Yes Khadeen!!!! I absolutely believe in the concept of men's jobs. I DO NOT take out the trash, shovel snow (unless ABSOLUTELY necessary), cut grass....etc. My husband & I have a very clear understanding of this. However, he doesn't cook, wash dishes, do laundry or clean the house (unless absolutely necessary) and I'm totally fine with that. Not only do I cook daily, I make his plate for him. Not because he demands it but because I choose to. He works full time AND is a full time Pastor and he takes very good care of me financially, emotionally and spiritually. This has worked for us for 30 years. To each their own!
@AC-hp2es5 жыл бұрын
For the issue/question discussed at 35:00, I think the reason criticism from our partner feels like an attack and/or earth shattering is because, as a society, we (women) are unconsciously programmed with the idea that we should be perfect. From childhood (at least in the black community) the expectation is that girls will do well in school and boys will cut up. When girl misbehave the conversation is of shock, but when boys misbehave, the messaging is ‘boys will be boys’. Then fast forward into adulthood, the message when it comes to relationships is, “What you won’t do, another will”, the existence of side chicks, strip clubs, etc.) All unconsciously creating the mindset that we must be “perfect” and we don’t measure up, there is another waiting in the wing to replace us. So, on a deeper level and even unbeknownst to us, we see criticism as not us not meeting the standard that has been placed on us all our lives, but also a possible pathway to infidelity.
@lifeofneu14385 жыл бұрын
You ain lie! I know I'm not perfect but when I called out, it feels so crushing because there's so much placed on us women from childhood. No one ever says "girls will be girls". Proverbs 31, every church mother and their advice to the women. There's a meme about women not being able to admit when we're wrong, but lowkey, a part of that is because of societal conditioning that men will make their mistakes, but we don't have that same window of grace as women.

When Devale said, "find someone who has found happiness in themselves," I literally started crying. 😢😢 I am diagnosed with major reoccurring depression and general anxiety disorder. I struggle with finding happiness in myself all of the time, and I wondered if it was even possible for me to be in a relationship with someone because they almost never live up to my expectations or I start relying on them to make me happy when they really can't. But I don't want to be alone because I don't have a lot emotional support outside of myself. Waiting until I "fix" things in my life is a slow and isolating process. So I don't know what to do, and I get scared when I meet someone I like. I want to wait, but I need love in my life outside of just myself to pick me up when I can't do it.
@shawandasmith38185 жыл бұрын
sleepbaby17 Don’t think that you have to be fixed to find love, sometimes finding love in those moments will catapult you to your best self. My relationship with my ex taught me my triggers and flaws and now I am a different level than I was before.

Just know you'll be all right. You don't have to isolate yourself. I understand where you're coming from - especially when you don't have the support. Know that you're worth love, just gotta find it in you first. God made you special and He made you YOU for a reason. Once you find your light, you'll find your purpose... once you find your purpose- you won't be so focused on what you didn't have, but what power you hold to be great on your own. You're worth it. If you believe just a little bit- it can help. Don't let your depression define you, once you let go of its power over you you'll find strength you didn't know you had. You're here for a reason & you'll get to see it if you keep your head to the sky. Remener... love attracts love

You are enough! Happiness doesn’t even come from ourselves but from God our Father. When He gives us joy nobody can take it away. Looking for Jesus will allow you to find yourself. I tried it your way once looking to my husband to find my happiness but it wasn’t until I began to focus on my faith and my Creator that I finally realized it’s not about me or my husband...there’s a bigger picture and purpose ❤️. Be blessed😘

Both my bf and I have depression, and we have helped each other grow and heal. I honestly would not be doing as well as I am right now without him, it's a myth that you have to "fix" yourself before a relationship. You have to be accountable with yourself, open to fix bad habits and modable

@59:23 - Two things - 1) Yes, society did not treat Black men kindly in those days. But Black women dealt with racism as well. 2) The whole Suzie Homemaker thing was not a reality for most Black women in the 50s. A lot of them worked outside the home, too.
@nca47945 жыл бұрын
That's true, but it doesn't mean the principles and expectations to "make a home" were different just because you worked. Employed outside or working for the family inside, there was still the idea that being a good woman meant catering to the needs of the family, especially their men, first. That's why so many women in the next generation started to reject marriage and motherhood in the 60s. Plus, there's a cultural element with her family also. I grew up in a West Indian family, and making a plate is seen as showing reverence to the husband as the head of the household. I know men who expect their plate before the children have eaten. I wasn't raised in a household like that, but it's no less real than taking your shoes off at the door.
@boomboom65775 жыл бұрын
Facts. In fact, the majority of black women worked outside of the household after the great migration north. And the myth of the mother homemaker was facilitated by black women domestic workers who cared for the house holds of white women. And yes, to the commenter who pointed out that black women were still expected to maintain a home for their children and husband. And when people assessed the state of black America, they blamed black women for working and displacing men from the workforce AND the household. The Moynihan Report is the most glaring and influential example that.

Loved this podcast, but I'd like to see Devale and Khadeen answer the questions in full. I know it's difficult being that you guys have so much in common, but a lot of the questions thrown at Devale weren't answered in full cuz Kev had a similar personal story to tell

I am glad they're not putting up a fake front about how relationships really are, like how many people do on social media, then behind the scenes they are screaming and miserable and toxic. Many times people have fights, don't talk to each other, irritate each other... the mature thing is to know the limits of each other, recognize that each person has their own inner life which they keep to themselves, to have a base set of rules about fighting and disagreement and to give each other benefit of doubt.

I am always excited about any conversation had by these couples. Their authenticity and honesty is so comforting. As a single female working on herself to be a part of a lifelong partnership, I appreciate the truths they share that are applicable even in my ‘singlehood’. At 28 I wish these conversations were regular parts of my upbringing but I am elated that they are now being had and so frequently. These conversations really allow us to acknowledge the fact that there isn’t an ideal marriage; there’s just the one that works for you and your partner along with the work you both commit to putting in to make it work. Thank you guys so so much. You all just spoke to my heart, embraced my soul and sparked new paths in my mind.

THISSSSSSSSS!! My goodness, this is the absolute best video I've EVER and I mean EVER watched on KZbin. This video was on time. This video is real. This video is enlightening and such an amazing conversation. Thank you all for your transparency.

Thank you so much for this episode. I have never, ever commented on a KZbin post or channel before in my life. However, I do believe it is warranted. I am currently in a long term relationship, engaged and to be married very soon. This episode has really given me insight into soo much that I am struggling with. I rely on episodes like this because not one elder, on both sides of my family, has had a successful relationship that I could lean on. I am trying to learn everything thing that I can as a business partner, fiancé and future wife to my spouse. I find I just don't know what to do and you all have eloquently expressed yourselves in such a vulnerable way so that our generation can succeed. So, thank you for this. It is truly life changing.🙏🏽

This is like therapy for me. I appreciate what you guys are doing. It really helps. I shed some tears about the comment that black men only feel like kings at home and it hit me because I have had to express that in a past relationship. Excellent content.

Great show, my 3 keys I look for in a man is Faith, Health, and yes willing to grow together all through life. It's good to find someone who you can be just be yourself around and willing to always put the work in even when you don't feel like it. May God continue to bless these real couples!

Lol, this episode is hilarious (and I'm only 13 mins in), Devale's face when he said they moved MiMi to Cali, lol!! I absolutely love & respect the open honesty between all of you, communication is definitely important--brutal honesty!!! Kev: "turn around & huggggg me, don't dap me up" hahaha, I completely understand that! Omg, I'm in tears laughing at Melissa & Kay's missed high-five moment....

Accountability feels like an attack when you’re not ready to change your behavior to improve your relationship or marriage. This was a great interview. Me and my wife pulled gems 💎 from this convo. Respect ✊🏽

Omg!! I love this particular show!! It gives me so much hope!! It’s only when you are transparent and mature and happy and whole with yourself that you can have these particular conversations with your spouse or significant other. Actually, I like all of your podcasts or shows 😁

This is a really good gem. I'm 53mins in and the convo about wanting vs needing help needs its own video. I often say understanding you can "be" independent is much different than trying to be "alone" and not know it. Relationships must have a give and take to make each person feel as if they contribute and not a burden, when you mentality is I can do all this by myself, you're trying to prove something to "you" and not necessarily the partner but at what cost

Re: Devale's question @ 35:00 - In my experience it's been the opposite. I'm able to process issues & concerns expressed by my partner, but then when I share an issue they (majority of men I've dated) react defensively. So I would say it's an individual case by case thing, not gender. Although a woman, I resonate the most with Devale. I wonder how many men resonate more with Khadeen & Melissa, etc. I think the combination of our personalities, trauma, coping mechanisms and attachment styles have a lot to do with it. The openness of this conversation is really beautiful. This is real life. Everyone on the planet has issues and your vulnerability in sharing where you're at in navigating & working through yours is a gift for those of us on the same journey. Thank you all. #BlackLove #youlovetoseeit
