Its in 7/8 time. Count to 7, not 4. 4 Would be eight 8th notes.

I’m always amazed no one talks about the time signature for this song. It’s what gives it the groove that it has. The main riff just wouldn’t be the same in 4/4.

Jerry Cantrell actually STRUMS the heavy palm muted first riff. He doesn't do the obvious metal thing with all down strokes. There's a killer live video of this song from '93 and the music video to check with. It actually makes keeping time with the 7/4 rhythm WAY easier. I couldn't believe it when I saw it.

I played drums for couple years and this helps so much in feeling the rhythm! I don't have a problem with understanding the odd time signatures (like Tool for example) but I struggle with grabbing chords:/
