I don't remember this being a hit for Dan, but it is a very well-known song by the Cascades in 1962 when it went to #3 on Billboard's Top 100 and #1 on the Easy Listening chart. It was written by one of the Cascades and is frequently played on classic or 60's radio stations. When you are in the mood for some pre-Beatles music, you might like this song.

This is a lovely cover of the 1962 hit by The Cascades (with a little quote from "Rain" by The Beatles at the end), but covers rarely show what an artist is all about. (This was the last single Dan ever released; it didn't make the main Billboard chart.) What would be more on point is Dan's *own* work, such as his biggest hit "Longer" or "Hard to Say" or "Run for the Roses". That last one is now the official song of the Kentucky Derby, so you'll get a chance to hear it next Saturday. Also, Dan's collaboration with Tim Weisberg, "The Power of Gold" should not be missed.

It bugs me when they react to remakes when the originals are usually so much better. It's not their fault, so much as the people recommending songs without telling them. I mean, who are these people they're taking their requests from?!

The original of this was written and recorded by the Cascades. It's more up-tempo and a classic example of the one-hit wonder. At the end there he was singing part of "Rain" a Beatles track by John Lennon. It was the first major track to use backwards tracking of the tape.

I’ve been a HUGE Dan fan ever since Souvenirs came out, which is actually his second album… the first one is Home Free and is very different, but I love it… Joe Walsh produced the Souvenirs album, and played on it, along with other great musicians… I first heard of Dan when Walsh introduced him on a Friday night concert show on TV and I believe they played Part of the Plan… I’ve seen him perform live at least 7 times, and 2 of them were solo concerts with Dan playing guitar or piano… My favorite album is Netherlands, by FAR, because it sounds like it was the peak of his writing…every song is amazing… But my second favorite is Twin Sons of Different Mothers, with jazz flute player, Tim Weisberg, who is also amazing… that concert tour was incredible… Dan is largely unknown or forgotten and that is a big loss in the music scene… He’s a great writer, singer, and guitarist and pianist… VERY underrated…he was only 56 when he died of prostrate cancer…

A little bit of trivia for the Dan Fans...he wrote three songs that were recorded by the country rock band Fool's Gold: "Choices," co-written by T. Kelly and D. Henson, "Old Tennessee," and "Love Me Through And Through." And for a really great collaboration album, Dan's album "Twin Sons Of Different Mothers" with Tim Weisberg. Thanks for reviewing ROTR.

Dan's music did well on the charts and he had 16 top 40 songs on the US Adult Contemporary Charts. There were many other songs that I sure thought should have been released as singles: To the Morning, Wysteria, Morning Sky (could have been a great bluegrass hit), Comes and Goes, Give Me Some Time, Since You've Asked (a great cover of the Judy Collins tune), Along the Road, Only the Heart May Know (a great duet with Emmy Lou Harris), Tuscon, AZ (Gazette) (a long tune telling a tragic story with some amazing guitar work), Believe In Me, Go Down Easy, Seeing You Again (my personal favorite), Sunlight (a cover of a Jesse Colin YOung song from '76), and Song Bird (with Tim Weisberg). Dan was an amazing writer, musician, and singer. I got to see him in concert 3 times and 2 of them were just him solo (including one in his home town of Peoria, IL.

Dan had so many wonderful songs. I’d love to see y’all react to “The Reach” (my personal favorite) or “Netherlands” (Amber will LOVE it….orchestra!)

Oh if Amber likes orchestral stuff, the whole Nether Lands album merits a listen. Dan had something like a twenty piece orchestra in the studio for that project...

The Cascades original went to #3 on Billboard in 1963 and was #4 overall for the year (lots of great songs in '63), iconic and great sounding song. The original featured thunder and rain effects and use of a celeste and a guy's conversation with the rain after his girl left him. A little bit of The Beatles song Rain is covered (one of Ringo's favorite drum pieces). :)

Here are some of his songs to dive into...."Longer", "Same Old Lang Syne", "Run For The Roses". My personal favorites are....."Believe In Me", "Only The Heart May Know"(with Emmy Lou Harris) and "Ghosts", this song is very intense, but I love it.

He wrote some very heartfelt, emotional music. Missing You is a personal favorite of mine. It really resonates with those times we are away from loved ones and just want to be back home.

Dudes, I love how many different artists and types of music you get into. For me, if you want the quintessential Dan Fogelberg experience, it is "Leader of the Band". One of the most moving songs ever recorded, it is a tribute to his father. Trust me, it is worth your time. A second to that is "Longer", a love ballad which is insanely beautiful.

Love that you listened to Dan. He was an amazing musician, songwriter and singer. His albums are beautiful, start to finish. Yes, he was very creative and experimented with a variety of sounds. Saw him live many times. Gone way too soon due cancer.

It's almost Derby time. You should have done Run For the Roses. Seems like I always hear that song somewhere around the first Saturday in May, when they actually do the run for roses at Churchill Downs in Louisville.

You absolutely need to listen to “There’s a Place in the World for a Gambler”, “Nether Lands”, “Longer” and “Power of Gold”. All fantastic songs by one of the best (and most underrated) singer-songwriters.

Dan Fogelberg was the songwriters songwriter. His love songs had depth of feeling. He could write descriptively about places and people, from soft ballads to rockers. He could sing, play guitar, and the piano. He was so talented that the EAGLES tried to convince him to join the band.
