This was super interesting. I love slivers and love to see where the idea came from. The fracturing of a god idea is interesting, but in my opinion the evolution of slivers to their habitat makes them more versatile that a single being that was split into parts. What I mean by that is that you can add new mechanics more easily to insects that a single god being and maintain the flavor of the slivers.

I like the Sliver God story arc. With a rework of the story, and Teferi's ability to time and universe travel, it would be possible to introduce/include the concept, maybe even having the God-source being a known entity, such as Nicol Bolas, and including a story arc where after enough knowledge and abilities, he could be reconstituted.

They could always do a set with the Astral Door being a secret history that some nefarious character is trying to reopen again by reforging and corrupting the god who destroyed it by gathering all of his "slivers" and maybe using Phyrexian oil to corrupt and control him. Could be interesting. Cool history lesson, Mike. Edit: I like the original lore. Makes sense why we call them "slivers."

This was awesome thanks purp. And thank you Sliverakul!!! For the whole mutation thing I wouldn't see it as that persay I see it as more that was just a small fraction of the heros power and the more sliver you have on board the closer you are to the godly being. Which is why once you let the sliver get that far you are screwed unless you figure out a way to board wipe

Reminds me of a race from Jack Chalker's "Well World", the Lamotien. Lamotien are little lumpy creatures that aren't all that smart or useful individually, but they can merge together in any number and mimic any other creature. They combine together to make up the mass of the creature they want to mimic, then shape-change the combined mass to take on the appearance and attributes of the mimicked creature. They also get smarter when combined, so they'd gather together to solve problems that required more intelligence.
@MadMattInc15 жыл бұрын
Even more interesting idea about the Slivers, if they were still part of a God. What if the slivers where trying to get back together, and not only would that be an issue with these little monsters getting bigger and bigger, but maybe the push for them to finally join together could fuck up the planes, hence why they need to be separated, and maybe in some cases, tamed.
@draxthemsklonst5 жыл бұрын
The starting premise of slivers is similar to the shardmind origin story in D&D. They are shards of a god that guarded or kept a door closed somehow, and it shattered. Now that I think about it, that premise is also in 40k's c'tan and Kaela Mensha Kaine: both shattered deity level beings of sorts.

Her cost to birth a sliver was changed to 2 because of an artefact that taught her how to love, "Heartstone". It made it so that the Queen can instantly create infinite slivers with only 1 mana. You do need gemhide and a haste sliver, but 4 cards to create infinite slivers isn't bad at all!

Honestly I feel with enough time and development a concept that lays on both original ideas would be great I mean the species can just be one made from the currupt remains of a god forever curse with existence but can never truly be whole. And the adaptations that promote there survival as a species further deviates from the original being that even if it ever become whole it will always be a husk of it's former self and a constant reminder of what happens to those who take cosmic law into there own hands

I vote marry the two. No reason that god being couldn't have been insectile, since it was called "The Controller". Actually I vote for even a hybrid god, insectile but still with an endoskeleton as well. And the Sliver queen is literally his spine and brain sheared away and in control as the largest part of him still intact. And the slivers it produces? Shards that break off as a result of the maimed form attempting to heal.

We still don’t know what plane they were taken from and their true origin in that sense. So they could always open it up to them being this fragmented god being that split into the Slivers

I think the god concept could still work even with slivers being insects. The god being has just only been able to reforge back to that point, and at least until now can evolve no further. The queen, overlord, legion and all the other legendary slivers could be the evolution moving forward back to the reforming of the god, but the damage is still far to severe to fix yet

If the slivers are the ultimate evolutionary force, born from a god, and able to inhabit incorporeal, magical planes… could they not be one of the most powerful forces in all of the Magic universe? Could they not, in theory, reach a critical mass able to defeat gods and beings such as the eldrazi?

Still waiting for 3 colored slivers...as for the lore i always conceptualized like the starcraft Zerg, tyranids from Warhammer, or the aliens that appear in edge of tommorrow. I think the idea of the Fragmented God is crazy interesting, but in reality doesn't it dwarf Nichol Bolas, God Eternals, and PlanesWalkers immensely ? PlanesWalkers in general are absurdly powerful by a common humans standards. Then comparing PWs to this said 'being' that has single cards that rival Bolas, Ugin, Sorin, ect.... Makes the multiverse convoluted. There's infinite Universes, and infinite abilities, and by the way one Universe has a God that was killed somehow (?????) and one of his/her thousands of parts could kill Bolas, who enslaved other God Eternals easily, but this guy could kill him without thinking with a just one Sliver.... It's just convoluted, but it could be amazing flavor. If WotC wanted OP OP flavor.

Even if they had the same exact effects I still hate the god-being fragment idea. It's a different feel. Slivers are an unstoppable (but in the lore, very stoppable, apparently), force of nature that mutates and adapts to their environment like the zerg or tyranids. I don't want to go on an adventure to find the fragments of some dude.
