I tried too years ago on some frames. The problem was that, while strong, it's not flexible and it tends to crack and break off with flexing movements that are typical of putting glasses on and off.

@@ozne_2358 You can strengthen it by using a piece of cotton fabric or some yarn. As you said, once the super glue dries, it gets a little brittle. When you use it with cotton, you can get a very strong structure.

this is common for filling chips on granite/marble counters. Use a sharp box cutter blade to smooth it flush with the counter. It dries translucent so it typically picks up the color of the counter. This trick saved me on more than one project.

So, I know how to easily remove screws of different metals. From aluminum to titanium. That screw was replaced, and that super glue trick doesn't work. Drill bigger size and put small portion of wood glue and a peg. 5. Use corrent size of screw and counter sink it properly or use a peg to hide the hole and the screw. Will also leave a nice finish. In summary - typical "Life hacks"...

Try superglue on ground up styrofoam or by dripping it onto the Styrofoam and using the melted drippings as a filler/glue. Or superglue and cigarette ashes. Or cotton. Or steel wool threads and glue dripped onto styrofoam so it melts the styrofoam into a liquid and using the liquid drippings to fill cracks/. And for extra sturdy and strong plastic…add steel wool fibers. The baking soda is good but styrofoam is even better. With steel wool fibers it’s extremely solid and sturdy.

Apparently super glue and powdered graphite (sandpaper against a carpenters pencil lead) will form much stronger bonds than with baking soda which is pretty impressive. Persumably the same would be true for granulated charcoal and super glue as the carbon bonds to super glue shold be the same. Charcoal is more expensive than baking soda, butnot so bad at 5 or 10 lb containers.

I've seen it done with a few foodstuffs, usually breakfast cereals like wheat biscuits. I've used SG and flour to shore up pulled-through screw holes. Is baking soda inherently better in some way? Is there an optimum filling medium, or does it not matter so much because the glue is doing all the work?
@jamesmaybury7452
@jamesmaybury7452 Жыл бұрын
@@Grandude77 there does seem to be a chemical reaction with baking powder but I think the graphite is just a filler, what Carlos de says about the carbon bonds may be true which is why it is so strong. I know the SG (cyanoacrylate) sets with moisture and certainly damping wood before going works well, do it in advance and wipe it to encourage the glue penetration, but I don’t know the chemistry. Note that some activators will speed up the reaction but reduce strength as demonstrated on another video I saw.

Lol this is how mechanics repair chips or minor cracks on helicopter rotors. Super glue and caustic. Cure, sand repeat. Then buff the defect area. It's stronger that almost any rotor material, as welds are supposed to be stronger than the joined peices.

I think, because in many countries Super Glue is kind of expensive. Super Glue is an amazing glue and adding baking soda makes it very useful for some purposes, but again: the glue is pricey. Probably there are similar products from China that are a lot cheaper, as far as I know.

There are a large number of brands of super glue that have different properties. Yes, in gram quantities, the way most people buy it, it’s very expensive. But while a bottle is pretty expensive, it’s much cheaper per ounce than those tiny consumer packaged quantities where the package and container costs half of the total cost.

The brand glue like Loctite is quite expensive but you can find the off brands for about 1/10 of the price around stores here in Sweden at least and it works fine, i use it all the time. I have never used super glue like in the video though.

@@Stefan- there are so many slightly different types of it that I just use specific types for whatever I’m doing. I find that there are differences in performance between them. I don’t mind the expense, you just need a few drops at the most for any project. I’ve tried no bane products and some don’t work well.w

@@melgross The ones that i have used works about as well as the brand glues but cost 1/10 of the price, i have also used super glue profesionally for many years earlier in manufacturing of electronics and perhaps more in the assembly of the plastic casings of electronic products, i mean working on glueing these things for days on end. We bought super glue by the litre at that small company. By all means use what you want, but i havent really noticed any difference. There may be specific materials that you may need specific types of glue for but then the standard brand glue wont work either.

I once accidentally made a knife cut of 3/4" on my hand and after cleaning it and waited few minutes to stop bleeding, i quickly covered it with crazy glue and added very little amounts of baking soda to dry it out, i added the baking soda very slowly to avoid that dangerous high temperature of the reaction. That patch lasted attached to skin the enough time to heal, many days. ,

Baking soda does not "dry it out", rather, it is a catalyst that accelerates the polymerization of cyanoacrylate.

@@thomasmaughan4798 I meant, the glue evaporates so it looks like drying, but not sure, that smoke that you can see with the reaction, does it have particles that come from the glue or the baking soda? Maybe both idk.

@@cerduteter6786 Crazy glue includes solvents. The baking soda produces an exothermic reaction, which is to say, it gets hot. So there's going to be vapors.

I wonder if you used an airbrush to spray on the glue and then some sort of powder spray gun to spray on the powder to build up layers. Just a thought.

The way I've done it to replace bits of things that have broken off, is to apply a layer of glue, then some baking soda, then some more glue and then some more soda until it reaches the desired thickness, then sand and form it into the correct shape.
