One thing none of these videos warn you about is the fumes when super glue and bicarbonate are mixed. First time I did it they nearly knocked me out. Do it outdoors or in a very well-ventilated area and wear a mask.

There's no reaction. That smoke is just normal for "super glue" when it's hardening. That's the normal glue curing reaction.
@Dranok1 Жыл бұрын
@@suprememasteroftheuniverse "That smoke" (there is no smoke, no combustion is taking place so no products of combustion are present, it's fumes, as the OP said, from the purely chemical reaction of the curing process) "is just normal for super glue" (which is why the instructions for use tell you to work in a well-ventilated area, like the OP said). "That's the normal glue curing reaction." Quite correct, and perfectly in support of the OP's statement of warning, so why did you start your response with the blatantly incorrect "There's no reaction." It makes the rest of your statement redundant in a daft way: "I can't make up my mind which is correct, the voices are telling me two contradictory facts but they are always true so I believe what they say to me..." Excessive fumes can be quite debilitating for some -- they especially create an acidic reaction to tears, like when you cut onions but worse, and if you breathe them in you can be in a world of pain for a short time. Cyanoacrylate deposition in a fume cabinet is a classic way of lifting evidence off delicate surfaces, for instance, showing how much fumes can be released, and there's even various shots of fumes in this video :-) The OP simply gave a very wise warning _from direct personal experience_ given the abnormal amount of super glue used in these methods, so why go and make yourself look like a fool? I'm sure you're not really...

I’ve been doing this for years now and it is a miracle. Anything superglue sticks to having baking soda strengthens it ten fold. Two things you must remember, 1) you can’t paint over it and for a finish look it is very difficult to make it look clean and 2) this one is very VERY IMPORTANT, DO NOT GET IT ON YOUR SKIN!!! I can’t stress this enough, it will burn you and nearly impossible to get off without taking skin with it!!

Mixture of super glue and baking soda can create a waterproof seal. When combined, super glue (cyanoacrylate adhesive) and baking soda undergo a chemical reaction that results in a durable and hard substance. Super glue works perfectly on skin. It really should be called skin glue.

@@testodude works perfectly on dry or dryish skin. It's actually slightly soluble in water, so fingers stuck together can be separated by using a blunt instrument such as the handle of a spoon to gradually prise them apart under running water. It's a slow job, typically ten to twenty minutes, but preferable to paying doctor's bills. Even better if available is to use the solvents designed to remove super glue. Fun fact: Police teams attending protests where the protesters have glued their hands to fixed objects now take the solvent with them as a matter of standard operating procedure, reducing the effectiveness of the protest tactic.

If you ground paper almost to dust and mixed it with paste to form a pizza dough-like mass, shaped it into a desired shape and then dried it, you had a very light and incredibly stable mass.

Thanks for the tip. I think in the case of araldite the flour is only acting as a physical powder not reacting chemically. That is like the way glass fibres add strength to the very similar two component resin used in construction of canoes for example. The glass does not react with the resin, but the physics of having different materials closely bonded makes the composite stronger than either of its components. Also think about that's what the gravel does in concrete. The flour is (I think) acting as pebbles but on a much smaller scale. If I am right, then any powder (talc, coal dust, etc) would work. Using iron fillings you might be able to cast a "plastic" object that reacts to magnets. Not tried any of the above, but some You-Tuber might like to play with these ideas. Thanks for the suggestion of using flour: that had never occurred to me

@@trueriver1950 I have also mixed 2-component epoxy resin with flour on my model aircraft. You can also use it to make molds and glue plywood frames into plastic hulls. It is much cheaper than superglue in my country. Flour produces a finer mixture than, for example, glass powder or iron oxide.

Any idea what the setting time is for the glue/baking soda mix? Is there a bit of working time to fill a 1/8” gap?
