Brilliant animals. They’re the true apex predators of the ocean. There’s a video on KZbin of Orcas killing a Tiger shark and it’s crazy, the way they dwarf the shark.

Exactly - depends on if the pod is resident or transient … You can tell these are transient by the size of the pod they travel in and it looks to be females and young which is typical of transient pods

I love your videos and look forward to new ones. I was born in Tofino and I tried to living in Winnipeg when I was 19. Six months in and after one of the coldest winters I watched a special on Vancouver Island, I cried. I was back on the Island the following week. The first thing I did was go to the beach and I was home. It's been 40 years and I've never lived more than 10 minutes from the ocean and when I need to recharge I walk on the beach. It's part of my soul.

Something to share: I live directly on the Gulf of Mexico in SW Florida. "Our" dolphins have developed a fishing "technique" that's both amazing and ingenious. (especially when the snook are running) We have a sandbar running parallel to the beach which, depending on the tide, is anywhere from 4.5'-6' deep. The dolphin chase then PIN the fish to the floor of the sand bar with their SNOUTS! (I kid you not!) They literally stand on their heads, tails flopping out of the water and crush the life out of their prey before nom, nom, chomp, chomp. (the first time I watched this behavior from my balcony, I thought I'd drunk too much Chardonnay...lol) Absolutely amazing and incredibly cool.

Orcas are amazing, they are my favorite animal. So intelligent and so beautiful. I know they don't attack humans, but man, I don't think there is animal that could kill you in more ways than orcas. Drowning, tail, teeth... Just beautiful and dreadful in the same time.

What I find very interesting is that there are *ZERO* recorded attacks on humans by Orcas in the wild. On the other hand, there have been several recorded instances of Orcas in captivity *KILLING* humans.

Their ability vs their inclination definitely varies. Orcas have mistaken people for their food source the way Great Whites have, but not as often.

This has been documented a lot - key thing here is stress … Social disruption and the inability to escape with other orca is a recipe for disaster … I’d advise you watch Blackfish if you get the chance

Part of it is due to how the orcas are moved around. often captivity pods are a mix of pods from the pacific and atlantic, which have different speech patterns and cultural ways. coupled with many of them not knowing or being raised alongside their mothers and they get aggressive.

Undoubtedly orca have killed humans in the wild - people have been co-existing (and competing with and probably hunting them at times) with these apex predators since the first hominids learned food could be obtained from the sea. We will never know just how many, the circumstances, etc because it is lost to prehistory. It may happen again one day, though maybe due to territoriality, memory of previous aggression by humans, etc rather than a predatory attack. Considering that practically every other medium-large organism is potential food for various populations, it is a (somewhat) curious phenomena that humans have yet to be documented as such... Many years ago I used to imagine that orcas had somehow transmitted the information down through the generations that we were too dangerous to kill (having witnessed whaling for centuries) but I do doubt its anything that fascinating.

Baja has been on my travel list since 1990 but I didn't get the chance to vacation there. Interesting footage and subject. I’ve noticed a lot of footage and reports of late regarding Orca’s ramming boats, biting off rudders and even sinking some small boats. One theory being that they are spreading a message to each other to attack boats due to orcas being damaged by boats and fishing lines 🤷🏻‍♀️ I wouldn’t discount anything any more! I see salmons doing this (jumping out of water) around the harbour of Vancouver, BC, Canada. Sea fleas and lice attach themselves to the fish and annoy the poop out of them so they jump out of the water using the impact to rid themselves of the nuisances.

The pod of Orca are feeding on the dolphin, it would be a waste of energy resources to tow around a prey item aimlessly. Orca do now possess shearing teeth like sharks, they require team work to tear large prey apart in palatable pieces.
