I was there and this is my story growing up as a teenager on the southside of Chicago. I still have my fake ID from 63rd & Halstead in the train station. I started spinning wax in 1983 and I bought music from Jimmy's on 87th & Ashland, Imports and JR's in Evergreen Plaza Mall from Juan Tovar and Armando who made the Land of Confusion track. On almost every block it was 2 or 3 dj's and everybody was highly competitive and serious about the craft. What really made the music huge was the neighborhood basement parties, back then you could find 3 or 4 parties going on in most neighborhoods on the southside and 100 to 200 people would show up and pay $1 to get in. The only thing that was not talked about was the House fashion it was very big back then. We partied at other clubs like the Hummingbird,Sheba,Rinkzone, Chicago State,Bismarck Pavilion with Lil Louis during the holidays and the downtown hotel party's. And the other radio stations that never gets mentioned is WKKC with Walter"Get Down" Brown, Bobby "Q" Bobby, Shelton "Spinning" Reese and Pink House and WNUR with T Sha Blee. I still have all of my wax that was talked about in this documentary and it brings back a lot of great memories watching this and it's good to see old friends and a lot of guys I have gotten a chance to meet during those times.

Adam Wilkins I wish I could tell you more about it. Unfortunately I can't remember the name of the clothes back then. I was a dj and the dancers and dance groups was into the fashion. If you look at the clip of the local news footage House Mania of the Charlie Club in this documentary you can see how everyone was dressed. If you look at Lil Louis,Ten City or JM Silk's album covers you would get a pretty good idea of some of the House fashion back then. Hopefully someone that was around who lived in Chicago back then will leave a comment and tell you more.

A steady high hat, a pulsing base line, a house diva vocalizing, an erratic lead taking you up, down, through and beyond- always yearning for more.

What a beautiful, beautiful depiction of a slice of history that I was fortunate to be around and immersed in.........albeit as a clubber in my native Manchester. I am sat here experiencing all manner of emotions, but mostly pride for how these pioneers grabbed hold of something and launched it into the stratosphere. I remember seeing that news clip on ABC 7 with Joan Episido woth the big hair at the 10:50 mark as a preteen or teenager in the 80s. I grew up on House and still listen to it. Even what it morphed into now Juke Music and Foot Work music! Jam Master Farley will always be my favorite!

man, I gotta say this an awesome video and seeing old dj's and producers that built house music sit at a diner and talk of their past about how they built house music. that is awesome! I'm a nobody but I am a dj who has played a long ass time and house music and love it and still love it to this day. But i know someday i'm gonna sit at a diner with old dj and producer friends and talk of our past, that's a damn good feeling. I hope all is still alive and well and keep on house in.

I feel like anyone here trying to argue that this documentary should have given credit to all sorts of electronic european music, or this and that or whatever has completly missed the point of house music. House is not just a music genre. House music is an experience. Real house music was and is defined by all night long parties with grand sound systems and togetherness. The birth of house wasnt just a new genre it was a revolution for the human experience. Tangerine dream and kraftwerk may have pioneered such use of electronic instruments but they bare no relation to the house music experience

House to me is an extension of R n B Motown dance grooves pioneered many years earlier. Me and friends dj'd in early 1970s NY all night underground clubs.... that party movement just got bigger and bigger as time went on! What changed where the drugs and the electronics.

House & Techno has become so diverse and sophisticated, for me the greatest genres ever to materialise and evolve such a broad spectrum of different sounds , reverb dissonance, production techniques, vocal ranges , musical arrangements, chords is covered by these 2 genres, love the soul and emotion covered by House&Techno, ranging from the euphoria of house and also many techno tracks to the futuristic, dystopian feel created by techno many covering important political messages, the music has become a bohemian almost art like movement, pushing our musical limits further and further , for me the most cutting edge creative and innovative music on the planet.

My Ethiopian 32 year old girlfriend never knew house and techno music was discovered by African Americans back in the 80's until I showed her this documentary . She thought was it purely white peoples music ....I don't blame her for saying that shes into american hip-hop but just goes to show that those pioneers don't get enough props....I'm an 80's child in Sydney and house music blew up big time with the large dance acid parties....best time to be a teenager with discovering new music. Still see the music evolving with new genres and past genres easy to find on youtube and other means.

Watching this documentary really gave me an appreciation of house music even more so. Being only 26 years of age i grew up listening to many genres of music. My pops owned a music store when I was growing up. I got alot of exposure to music as a kid. With that being said, i knew what freestyle was growing up and somewhat in a way what house music was. It wasn't until recently when I went to EDC last year in vegas did i really get a grip on future, progressive, deep, and acid house. Factory 93 stage keeps those deep house vibes alive at festivals. But one thing is certain house music is a universal language spoken and understood by all, because not one man owns house. That is all. 😵

There was a loft in Boston too. Same kind of story. A door in an alley. Now gone and replaced with non-descript condos. I first went back in 1990 give or take a year. I remember going there on new years eve several years in a row; pretty sure '91, '92 and '93. DJ Jason Mouse and Overload played upstairs where I always hung out. There was nothing else like it anywhere. Pure dancing. All night long. Midnight to 6AM. I am grateful to have experienced and enjoyed such a phenomenon.

Not just HBCUs, In the early 80s, it was the college scene period. My oldest sister got me into a Chicago college party in 1981. I heard 'is it all over my face, Let's go dancing and all the music that predated Chicago recordings. The foundation was laid. Years later, the campuses of Carbondale and Champaign, were invaded with House Music. lol I wasn't a student, but I partied at both.

I used to listen to Jazzy M (based in West Croydon) on LWR. He also had Chicago djs broadcasting live from Chicago via a telephone link live over London. It was late 85 or very early 86. His Chicago contact was a guy called Rob Olson who also released a compilation album. At the time many of these tracks were pre-release and unavailable anywhere.

Wow, part two is also great. I'm still looking for a Ron Hardy version of 'Love can't turn around' where the singer just dishes out insults like 'You shirt is pink, your armpits stink, why don't you turn around?' and 'Your face looks kinda sad, your breath smells kinda bad why don't you turn around?'. Yes the club scene help the movement, but lets not forget around mid-80's WBMX 102.7 change format on Friday & Saturday nights from 10pm.-4am with Friday Night Jams & Saturday Nite Live Ain't No Jive Dance Party. A radio station where local DJs played their mixes, known as HOT MIX. A place that gave urban/suburban young adults an experience to listen to underground dance music.

Do not forget that house music hit it big in South Africa during the apartheid era. Clubs like status with DJ Boogie Harry. Was a way where we could boogie away from the evil of apartheid. we even use clubs to pursue awareness against apartheid. in south Africa Guys like Frankie Knuckles and Silk were big. Miss 80's dance music.
