Troublemaker on amateur radio

STORY: I was listening to these two guys in Massachusetts having a nice conversation, when all of a sudden, the guy with the southern accent comes in and starts swearing (illegal) and complaining about the guy's audio (which as you can hear, is perfectly fine), and that he's causing splattering further up the band.
After I stopped filming, other people proceeded to come in and let the protagonist know that there was nothing wrong with his audio. The protagonist's friend tuned up the band, and found the troublemaker on another frequency doing the same thing to another group of hams. Our protagonist gets the troublemaker's call sign and looks him up on the Internet, and finds that he's had several call signs, probably because he keeps ticking people off.
Don't be that kind of ham.

Let's be completely honest, audio compression/processing by it's very nature increases Intermediatory (off frequency) signal levels (splatter), propagation conditions, location/proximity and equipment can all contribute towards the problem however that doesn't mean we can/should verbally abuse other operators, the air waves belong to all and sometimes we just need to move frequency 👍

@@VTXHobbies well, that and the efficiency of the mode over ssb and fm, less bandwidth used, usually further distances, and you literally only listen to one tone, short or long, so no having to decipher pronunciations of the alphabet by literally thousands of cultures worldwide, CW is the same for everyone. Not to mention CW only rigs have an insanely low current draw, meaning a small battery can last a very long time for portable comms, as opposed to ssb or fm, which are power hungry modes.

When you have no real worries in life you find yourself on 80 meters complaining when things don't go your way. Splattering is often used as an excuse to complain and compare them to CB ops. Ham radios often include filters that work very well for this type of situation but some refuse to use them and if they can hear you they are offended and will non stop complain.

To my experienced ear his audio is clean with a bit of a peak around 1500-2000 hz. he is lighter on bass than the fellow complaining. But that's OK. On FM they call it pre emphasis. it makes for better S/N ratio. he mentioned 3/4 scale on ALC meter. to me he's hitting it a bit hard for a local ragchew, but perfect for DX! I don't hear any distortion, but I am listening to KZbin.

In the 80's we met up on 3915 every night and usually I ran 100 watts until the hogs started rooting in, I would kick on a home brew 4-1000A in a pressurized big Bud cabinet being shoved by a 10KVA transformer and oil filled caps. It would clear the area just either side of 3915. Some of these guys would just drift right on top of you and in a couple of minutes would drift on by, can you imaging have to follow that person to stay in the conversation. BTW; that amp was super clean.

I'm a retired RF engineer and I got into ham radio years ago thinking it would be "intelligent" and I quickly realized that license or not, it's almost like CB on some bands/modes.. many don't really understand the technology, many really don't know what the hell they're talking about half the time (but usually think they do), and then if you try to enlighten them because you know technically, they don't want to hear it; they'll argue with you, and some of them love to talk, have to be right, selfish with excessive bandwidth and power, and are bad at listening, so it's just a terrible forum to be involved with if you want to have any meaningful conversation.. Everyone isn't bad, but it's a long way from lots of good operators. They are a minority at this point.

I've heard lots of nasty stuff in that area of the band. There's a pirate in central CA that used to (maybe still does) record the vilest things an broadcast them 24/7. He did it for years. Amazing. I'm just a listener.

sorry but this is what happens when you loosen control { not needing to learn code } and you get everyone and their buddies becoming " hams ".
@themaritimegirl
@themaritimegirl 5 жыл бұрын
I disagree - you still have to learn all the other stuff, which includes safety and etiquette. Some of the nicest hams I've met are younger ones who didn't need to learn Morse. Also, the guy being rude in this video claims he's been on that frequency since the 70s, which means he *did* have to learn Morse.

Well he can claim anything he wants who's to know the truth. But the fact remains their are more a_ _ holes on the hf bands now than before they removed code from the exam. A great example is 7.200. Listen there for about a week and you will hear it for yourself. Fact is code made you learn something hard in order to get your ticket and therefore you appreciated that right to be called a "ham".

how did you get the audio level to show on the swr display without transmitting ?

@terrygunderson5681 7 жыл бұрын
Andhan Andhan it's not the audio level is the signal strength. you'll experience that in your car listening to your local radio station by driving 45 miles or so and passing under a bridge and the radio station gets "fuzzy"

This is good. Real conversations can be friendly and the opposite of friendly. Not a big fucking deal.

I've Been a ham for50 yrs now, and this has been going on that long to my knowledge. then and now? the best way to combat this is to ignore them completely. and most times they will go away. and get a fix on his position, and get a call. and turn him in to the FCC. But avoidance works well. this is not indicative of all amateur's. and luckily these guys are few.

I don understand who the troublemaker is. They are both in the wrong. The elderly gentleman is wrong fro thinking that he owns HAM radio. The younger guy is wrong for running as much power as he wants to. The "running as much power as I want" practice and mentality is against FCC regulations. You are only allowed to run the bare minimum needed to contact who you intend to contact. If you are trying to talk to someone in your same town, then 5 watts is all you need, and you should not exceed that.
