Here at 3:00 the way he's describing it is how people described being thrown by O-Sensei, they didn't feel it or even know how they were thrown. I think when Adam says "e" he means "Yi" or intent... so it's like "mind throwing..." Bruce Frantzis describes his master in China actually moving him by mind control. 6:13 At this point where Adam does two iriminage Aikido techniques in a row I just realized that O-Sensei was hiding Tai Chi inside Aikido (or inside Daito Ryu)... and he never revealed that secret. My Aikido teacher always recommended we learn Tai Chi and even taught it... and other teachers have shown me how the Tai Chi moves are the Aikido techniques... And then you have Gozo Shioda's son describing Aikido as "a match in a flash" just how Adam is describing martial fa jin.

Before you read on I have to say that I am biased because I am following Sifu Mizner’s system. However, in my opinion this is one of the best all round demonstrations and explanations of Yang style tai chi you’ll find anywhere. The martial man is no fool. Very experienced in many martial arts yet is manipulated my Sifu Mizner’s internal energy. This is one of my favourite KZbin videos. I’m so blessed to be a Discover Tai Chi student. 🙏🙇‍♂️🙏

Tao Te Ching - Lao Tzu - chapter 41 The wise student hears of the Tao and practises it diligently. The average student hears of the Tao and gives it thought now and again. The foolish student hears of the Tao and laughs aloud. If there were no laughter, the Tao would not be what it is. Hence it is said: The bright path seems dim; Going forward seems like retreat; The easy way seems hard; The highest Virtue seems empty; Great purity seems sullied; A wealth of Virtue seems inadequate; The strength of Virtue seems frail; Real Virtue seems unreal; The perfect square has no corners; Great talents ripen late; The highest notes are hard to hear; The greatest form has no shape. The Tao is hidden and without name. The Tao alone nourishes and brings everything to fulfillment.

I'd like to add something here that I hope will help clarify something to those who are willing actually to learn what is going on here. There are reasons that Tai Chi is not (in this era) known as a fighting art: One reason is that the majority of those who learn Tai Chi have no interest in fighting; rather, they are drawn to some of the other attractive elements of the art such as exercise, health, harmonizing the body, etc. Another reason is that unlike external martial arts, the accumulation of fighting skill is NOT linear, or continuous. Let me explain. When one studies Karate, for example, kicks, punches, and blocks are learned immediately, and sparring practice starts either right away, or quite soon in training. If one puts any time into practice, the kicks, punches, and blocks become gradually more precise, quick, and complex; and the sparring becomes more effective. But in the study of an internal art such as Tai Chi, there is a lot which must first be done BEFORE any sort of applications or sparring starts. Why? Because if one starts with applications and sparring at once, the force will be the "stupid" force, or Li, to which Shifu Mizner refers in the video. That's a BAD habit, and completely contrary to internal principles; and as we all know, bad habits are hard to break. The solution, then, is the proper study of Tai Chi in which first loosening and relaxing of the body is practiced, followed by the study of forms. This continues on for a good deal of time (depending on the student), after which push hands starts, to train sensitivity. But as Shifu Adam explains so well above, the danger here is not to resort to stupid force, as one often sees in even international competition. Rather, it is to train Ting Jin (listening) and Fa Jin (exploding internal force). Now, I have to emphasize, it takes several years of hard training in forms and push hands before one starts to understand and use this smart force--it isn't, by the way, only simple physics (again, as Mizner demonstrates). Then, and only then--after several years--can one only START to do fighting applications and sparing in and honest, internal way. There simply aren't many teachers out there in the West who even did this internal fight training, themselves; so they don't have the ability, of course, to teach fighting. There are more in the East, but still, not nearly so much. I should just add that I am neither a student of Mizner, nor have I ever met or corresponded with him. I don't even have the same lineage. (He is Yang style through Cheng Man-Ching, and I am Yang through Yang Shou-chung, and Chen through Chen Fa-Ke.
@taiji1478
@taiji1478 6 жыл бұрын
Go to Chenjiagou or Daqingshan, spend 1-3 months learning Yilu, learn tuishou as you go. Train with people who are stronger than you. The applications present themselves during pushhands and you can learn them right away. Especially if you seek out and find other attendees that like to play rough. It's not as complex as you make it out to be. If you are a rank beginner with little or no prior experience, you will miss a lot of things, sure. But if you come from any martial art background, especially judo and wrestling, but even karate, you have a better chance at getting it. Many of the best players in internal martial arts cross-trained a variety of other fighting arts before learning taiji, and that is (one of the reasons) why taiji is the advanced degree. It's not arcane magic that requires years of structured, programmed learning before you begin to comprehend it. I would think a "Chen through Chen Fa Ke" would understand that, frankly.

Hi, thank you for this. Very helpful. I am a westener living in Hong Kong and am fortunate to train and practice with some people who know internal arts to the same if not higher level. Truly it is not easy to learn even with good instruction. Adam is not a magician, but you need to learn with and from someone who knows such things. its not a set of instructions or techniques. Its the cultivation of a feeling. That is my current understanding.

I love martial arts. I practice every day, including Tai Ji. My perspective is as follows. For those of you who do not train soft arts, taking blows with a stiff frame is punishing. When you practice a soft art, your reaction to surface tension is to go with it. Yielding with any point in the body. If some one pushes, after breaking your root, instead of falling down to the ground, you would simply begin to walk backwards using the force they gave you. Now if some one did that to you 2000 times, your ability to yield a greater force of push would look like a long walk back wards. This is of course, after root has been broken or in this case sung. Thank you for doing this interview. I believe having these conversations is really great for all of the division and pride within the world of martial arts. Many people are looking for different things in the martial arts, when we want others to see what we see, we begin to use martial arts as a tool of conformity. I am grateful that someone with as much Kung Fu as Adam shares openly with others. Often the same attitude of conformity leads to teachers making excuses for not using students they have trained to show their skill. I would love to do a documentary on modern martial arts. Present day. I envy your work and hope to one day do something as special as this.

I got it! Extricating yourself from mysterious hands can only happen through very small gaps. Any intention to escape is instantly detected. Any wrong angle leads to a small adjustment closing the gaps even further, like a constrictor squeezing out air or a BJJ'er working towards a lock or choke hold. Success however depends very much on approach which is why he rather goes for the pull-push when he didn't manage to seize. So, a big part of the art is to manipulate your approach to get you in a seizable posture, hence the focus on first touch. Yin and yang won't do as an explanation for zhong ding, though. It does help to have a good appetite.

Adam's wisdom and humor cracks me up.. he is right on many levels and can smile within, all while maintaining integrity. Its like the oracle of Tai Chi speaking through him .. Adam mentions that for the principles of Tai Chi to work properly the shape opens to allow it .. you can not put the structure of other arts into that of Tai Chi or force Tai Chi to work within other structures. My Wing Chun Sifu once told me that one of his long time student's left and trained Tai Chi for a few years and came back to visit. My Sifu noticed that the student's Wing Chun was a lot worse.. so I guess if you go on the Tai Chi path you need to get to "smart hands" and then go beyond that. Of course the student's hybrid Wing Chun/Tai Chi structure was not correct for that type of use anymore, and this just goes to prove Adam's point. Wing Chun mostly works its version of smart hands, of using structure, there are some masters who have developed an internal side of WC but I suppose as it becomes more internal than external then the principles themselves or use of sung will change the outward appearance to that of Tai Chi.

I have a few questions for @THE MARTIAL MAN, I read your article on themartialman.com/how-does-it-feel-to-cross-hands-with-adam-mizner/, and I am curious about the way you were pushing Mr Mizner. Was it a jerky, quick push, as if to push someone away as far as you can, or were you pushing him slowly as to just move him from his position? And in which direction were you applying the force, towards the ground or towards the back of Mr Mizner? Because I am simply dumbstruck by the way you were unable to push back a sitting man with his legs dangling in the air.

THE MARTIAL MAN Dear sir, please invite a skeptical martial artist with you on your trips, a respectful martial artist who will apply only as much pressure as allowed by you to be respectful of the situation and level of aggression demonstrated, but adequate to be part of an independent pressure test. If you are then willing to include these pressure tests in your videos, I think they would make your video encounters a lot more credible. I mean this in a good way. And I mean the person you take along must be a genuine skeptic who is not easily suggestible, but one who is respectful.

The best way to generate your chi is to be calm and be one with the action and let it naturaly flow with out forcing it. If you force the fart or turd it will block the chi and demage your internal and externaly, but when you are calm, don't force it, then your chi increases and you will become one with the action and one with the universal force.

But Taijiquan is not the only internal martial art that uses qi in this way. What about Martial Qigong.
@THEMARTIALMAN
@THEMARTIALMAN 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, you are correct that Taijiquan is not the art to use Qi. However, the way it is demonstrated in this video is specific to Yang style Taijiquan. Which method or style are you referring to when you referenced "Martial Qigong"?

8 gates? Can we hear more about it?
@joshpickles9022
@joshpickles9022 5 жыл бұрын
The 8 Gates are the energies or jins that make up tai ji Quan. Peng, lu, ji, an (ward off, roll back, press and push) are the first four and the easiest to grasp. The jins are learned as 8 postures and variations on those whic is what the slow form is. Over time the jins are refined more and more and the movements made smaller and smaller to enable the student to ultimately use those techniques internally without moving externally. The 8 Gates or jins / energies cover all forms of defence and attack and once mastered make you invulnerable (in theory). Hope this helps and feel free to ask more questions. I love sharing about tai ji Quan.

I don't think it's beer. I suspect it's a lot of fast food or highly processed food, which contains a lot of sugar. This kind of diet causes fatty liver. A bad diet can't be out trained. I'm not implying that this detracts from Adam's tai chi skills, but he will eventually get sick unless he changes his diet.

I call it force redirection and absorption, a manipulation of the spiral and toroidal forces in yin yang manipulation. The higher level is force transformation. Transforming one force into another force. A rooting power is transformed into an unrooting power and vice a versa. The next level, I would imagine, would be recombinatio of yin and yang into Wu. Meaning, there is no longer Opposition of Forces, Vectors, or anything. The moment white touches black, they become Wu. The moment black touches white, it becomes Wu. The moment negative hits positive energy, they become Wu and the Wu is thus directed by the Divine Will, not by the structure or mass of this dimension. Adam Mizner level of skill and mastery is very well done in the fundamental principles. Without matching that skill, it won't matter what techniques I use against him as the Wu and the yin yang manipulation, renders techniques meaningless.
