I have taken several tours of the A. Smith Bowman distillery and have spoken in depth with many on their staff. I love their whiskeys. Some fun facts: while BT does the first distillation, a second is done at Bowman using one specific still; the mash bill is neither BT 1 or 2, but Bowman’s own; the Bowman Small Batch is generally aged 8 years, the Port finish is aged 6 years, and the John J. Bowman Single Barrel is 11-12 years; BT will make in one day what Bowman does in a year. Bowman also produces Virginia Gentleman, and despite being an 80 proofer, is fairly decent.

I did a similar tasting recently with Blanton’s single barrel, Blantons gold, John J Bowman, and Rock Hill Farms. Rock Hill took the overall win for me, but John J Bowman is easily the best bang for the buck.

I got to my state’s allocated release a little late and the cashier was like oh no you’re a little late we already sold out of blantons! They still had half a case of John J Bowman left so I grabbed one of them and was thanking the people who picked Blantons for the name recognition not knowing what they were leaving behind for me. Blows my mind when they do a drop and people who have been waiting in line for 2 hours just leave empty handed once the cashiers announce they’re out of Blantons 🤡

Not surprised that the Blanton's came in third. A couple weekends ago I happened to pick up a regular Blanton's at MSRP - the first in about five years. I cracked it and I can say it was completely underwhelming, not much of a nose and a pretty run-of-the-mill pallet. It's not bad, but it's not even close to great. As for a Triple Bass recommendation, how about a Stagg vs. an ECBP vs. a JD SBBP? I think that would be interesting. Cheers!

They've been varying a bit more lately unfortunately. I've had newer Blanton's (dumped feb 2024) that taste like a creamy chocolate orange, and some other newer bottles that lack much of anything nuanced overall.

A fantastic idea for a triple. I have had John J Bowman at the too of my buy list when I am in Maryland. I am fortunate to have 2 clear and green labels (unopened). My excuse, still working through a vertical tasting of ECBPs (B521-B522) which I enjoyed in February 2023. I also have an open ECBP A123. I comment to state that I went to Frankfort Kentucky last September and procured 2 EH Taylor small batch bottles, 1 of which is a hitter, the other not so much. Smart to put them in black glasses.... I did a blind a while back between Weller 12 and Weller Special Reserve... and as soon as my wife placed the snifters in front of me, I immediately knew which was which 😂 Before I watch your reveal, I'm going to guess 1. Blanton's, 2. E.H. Taylor, 3. Bowman. Let's see how I did... Wow! I couldn't have been further off! 🤭 But I shouldn't be too surprised. I have had E.H. Taylor, and I dug it. I've had Bowman, and I was not impressed... have not had Blanton's Gold, but would have expected it to finish 1 or 2.

I've never had a Blantons Gold, but between my EHT SiB and JJB, I also would give the EHT a slight edge. That being said, boy do I love my JJB, and luckily it shows up semi regularly here in VA. I always pick one up if I see it.

Just got John Bowman at a limited availability event in Virginia, which I chose over EH Taylor and Blantons (not a Blantons fan and already have a bottle of Taylor on the shelf). Happy to come across this review.

Great show as always! Unfortunately, when we arrive at any bourbon shelf, the likelihood of having a choice between all three of these offerings will be slim to none. However, it does show that some offerings, even those that lack the hype, really shouldn't be ignored! I found a bottle of Benchmark Full Proof at the bottom of a shelf on a few occasions, and now affectionately refer to it as being Buffalo Trace on steroids! When these opportunities present theirselves, how can anyone go wrong! Once again, great show, and Cheers!

Great vid. Jason. As you intoduced this line-up and described the nose/palate it totally lived with my experience with them although never had Blanton's Gold (only SiB and SFTB). My EHT SiB is really enjoyable - sweet, cherry but also oak. JJB has always been a solid pour and hold its own in a line-up. Only Blanton's that has impressed me is SFTB but havent put it up against EHT BP, although that might be a good battle.

I started my journal chasing Blantons and Taylor before trying Bowman’s and for me Bowman’s is by far my favorite. Good thing is I’m about 10 miles from the distillery so it’s obtainable for me as well!

I'm not surprised on the winner and its showing up in SoCal for $75, I just picked up a bottle at TW. I really do like the sweetness of Blanton's Gold though. I bought the John J Bowman years ago when it was the old bottle, it was good. It had alot of cherry and reminded me of Blanton's SB. Great Video as always.

i have a pretty good collection, ~150 bottles. i have a few EH single barrels, but i have only opened 1 of them (store pick) and that 1 is by far my favorite bottle. i have every non BTAC buffalo trace bottle, and it isn't even close to the EH. i also have a 139 proof stagg store pick that is damn near the same liquid just 39 proof higher and the EH is so much more drinker friendly. i have also been hoarding bowman single barrels for the last few years, solid solid bottle!! bowman is my daily go to, but it is by far the easiest to come by where i live.

Oh this is a great comparison!! Recently picked up the John J Bowman Single Barrel (the previous bottling label that is clear, not green) and it's a tasty pour! Also easier to find at a better price here in Northeastern NJ/NYC, than the other two (EH Taylor and Blanton's Gold)🥃🥃🥃

Bowman is my hometown distillery and they’re fantastic people. They make several distilled products but beyond their bourbon, which I prefer to most anything at the price, their Tinkerman’s gin comes in three flavors, Citrus Supreme, Curiously Bright & Complex, and Sweet Spice. All three are fantastic. I like the Citrus neat and Curiously for a clean, delicate gin & tonic. Their Mary Hite Bowman bourbon cream (with caramel…) is decadent neat, in coffee, or over ice cream.

Been drinking bowman’s since buffalo trace products are so hard to find. Eagle rare is my favorite. They’ve come out with a blend called travelers. Very interesting and easy to get.

I don’t get it from every John J Bowman I’ve had, but some of them have a strong grape candy note (to my palate at least) that I’ve only rly gotten from Stagg releases, particularly 22B

I blinded JJB ,Blantons & Blantons Gold last weekend. Imo JJB was very similar to Blantons Gold. The heat was even and the palate very similar. Regular Blantons had way less heat and more cream.

The port-finished Bowman is very good. It came from an allocated experiment they did several years ago that went over well so they made it a regular release.

I really am not a giant of either Blantons or Eagle Rare. John J. Is harder to come by in my area than EH single. EH is always buttery smooth, especially their barrel proof. Honestly, I'm a larger fan of the stuff that has cherry and pepper notes. Stagg Jr. batch 23a has my attention recently, especially considering I have three bottles, one at a markup, one for retail and the third for free from my guitar instructor. If you really want to try something massively delicious and way out of the ordinary, get a Doc Swinson Bossa Nova Amburana from Canterbury Liquors in CT. It's like delicious bourbon with a desert twist. Single handedly the most impressive Amburana finished bourbon I've had in my life. I live in SC, and it is absolutely worth the trip to go there. Trust me. Irene is the bees knees.

Sorry but I’ve had Blanton’s and Blanton’s gold and neither of them are worth the hunt over EH Taylor small batch or single barrel. I’ve also put EH Taylor Single Barrel over Elmer T Lee. So I’ll keep searching for more Taylor over them. Great comparison video.

Being that you seem to go for the higher gravity and less sweet bourbons/whiskeys, I wasnt surprised to see Blantons coming in last. However, For me, I do enjoy more of a sweeter variety with a bit of baking spice etc. As far as proof goes..anything from 90 to 115 are perfect for me.

Bowman is my hometown distillery. It’s a big (open) secret that they work with Buffalo Trace distillate. But which one? Two different theories. First, some say they just get MB1 and further distill it (when done, triple distilled) and then age it using a unique barrel size and orientation. Smaller barrels stored on their side in a giant brick rickhouse (a repurposed building) near the Rappahannock River. The other theory, the one I think is most credible, is that Buffalo Trace provides Bowman with a proprietary blend of MB1 and MB2, and then they process and age it in their unique fashion. Jason detected a bit more rye in JJB, which provides further evidence that there’s probably some MB2 in there. FWIW. 😊 🇺🇸

I live less than an hour from Bowman distillery and I've been trying to get a bottle of John J Bowman for over a year. It's harder to get than some Buffalo Trace products.
