Dear Math Sorcerer, I have been following your advice and studied like crazy for my graduate-level Linear Algebra class. I studied every homework problem, worksheet problem, exam question, etc. until I could do them cold, and knew all the definitions thoroughly. If you are struggling with every homework assignment-this is normal! Wrestle the bear until it’s down but if you’re getting burned out from thinking about a problem, take a break. I usually go for a walk or listen to a podcast, to give my brain a break. Typically I’ll be able to figure out the missing pieces by putting the problem down and coming back to it later.

Hi Math Sorcerer, I wanted to say thank you for helping me get through the spring semester. I decided to take Real Analysis after taking an intro to proofs course back in the fall and oh man was this class HARD. Some of your proof videos helped but it was more of your motivational videos that got me through. Videos where the main message was to acknowledge the difficulty of Mathematics but enjoy it all to the fullest. You helped me spark a new love I didn't know I had for math :) You have become like an "unofficial" mentor so I thank you for your inspiration!

Excellent advice! I would add that students who are having difficulty deciding between mathematics and another major might want to consider a double major. Although it took me an extra year to complete (5 years as an undergraduate), double majoring in pure mathematics and computer science turned out to be a good choice for me.

I'm glad to hear you respect maths degrees and get goose bumps when you see it on someones resume. I've never even been asked what I studied at university in a job interview ! (But I'm from Australia, maybe thats why). My advice to Marissa (which you touched on) - be that annoying student, visit the profs office and ask questions. That was essential to me completing my degree successfully.

Lol re: the "I got goosebumps about seeing a math degree" - I'm one class away from completing a math degree, specifically to pad my resume. I'm an old software engineer, and software is an ageist industry. I felt like I need something to make the resume pop. Every hiring manager I've ever worked with paused when they saw "math degree" on a resume, so I decided I needed one. Also, maybe it goes without saying, but yeah I sacrificed lots of time and Math Sorcerer lectures got me through...

Bonn (the university) is famous for mathematics! My favorite mathematician, Lisa Sauermann is a professor at Bonn. She does amazing work in extremal combinatorics

I guess in becoming an Accountant, I could say that I'd sacrificed myself to the Temple Of Mammon. However, I was fortunate enough to have worked in the days before computer accounting programs had really taken off, so I was working with raw data, compiling balance sheets, and income-and-expenditure accounts by employing double-entry bookkeeping, and then working out taxation matters from thick reference books. All by hand. It was great. I loved it. Some of the people were not too wonderful, but that's life.

I also started my accounting career many decades ago doing manual bookkeeping. That, plus math and early computer science classes, developed my knowledge about how to organize data--including how to use computer programs to do this--and thus benefited my entire accounting career. (That manual bookkeeping was fun for me, too. A good feeling when everything balanced out, or when I figured out why things weren't balancing. I liked most of the people I worked with, and for those other few, well as you said, that's life.)

Great and important video. I would add think carefully about you minor. Find out what are the best jobs for math majors. Take a few applied math courses depending on your goals. Take statistics and numerical analysis. Consider a minor in computer science unless you have some path in mind like teaching.

An encouragement to Marisa and all aspiring maths majors. I wish I was guided this way. I encourage you all to practice your mathematics as. aspiring tutors, it will be a wonderful start to practical placement or even work experience. Study during the week and if you can get hired on a Saturday or Sunday or Holiday period, then you might make some income. You r goal should be to reduce the maths disorder or dyscalculia. We need to all be numerates in this complex world.

I basically tell my students what's on the exam. I say things like this is an important example, you need to be able to do this to succeed in the next class in the sequence, and my personal favorite this would be a good exam question.

You said that Math enthusiasts are in the minority. But everything about the universe, everything about business etc., are about math, atleast to the degree needed. It's just that Calculus and above are used by math or physics geeks and other professionals that need modeling with mathematics.

Those are not really what math is. Advanced math is all about abstraction and rigor which has nothing to do with regular applications that elementary maths like calculus have so that's what he meant by that

Looking for advice for a unique situation. I am 50 years old and had to give up my career due to nerve damage. I have always wanted to learn math so now that I have time on my hands, I thought it would be a good thing to occupy my time with. Do you have any advice for someone who wants to do this for "fun"? Ohhh my case would be then totally different ... Got master degree in math without being motivated to do it. I would love to become a Doctor or Biologist, but my surroundings pushed me to do math. Okay. I had to change my mindset to achieve my master. Instead of drilling college math, I spent time to find the best method and strategy to learn it, and the more I went to a challenging math class the more I enjoyed it, simply because the method I found was 100% bullet proof. Now I help many students to build a strong math mindset based on conceptual understanding and computational hands-on by constantly displaying the usefulness of math in STEM fields and real life. Hope this could motivate unmotivated math students to to math.

Math is hard and most only consider arithmetic as the principal use of mathematics unless your area of study or work uses mathematics for either modeling or analysis. In any case mathematics is much more versatile than most know. Within the last 15-20 years there has been a rise in analysis in many areas (many which have made the casual person aware) that only used mathematics in a rudimentary way. We SHOULd have more math majors but it turns out that sub areas in other departments will continue to develop a practical side of mathematics (applied mathematics) and the maths majors will be relegated to those who are undecided in how they want to apply mathematics or are pure mathematicians. My prediction, much like there is a philosophical underpinning to all areas of study there will be a mathematical grounding as an approach to the subject as well.

Sometimes it just takes time (and practice) for things to click. Just don't blame yourself or mistake getting stuck for a bad sign. It happens to everyone at some point if they're lifelong learners, thinkers and problem-solvers.

DO NOT WRITE NOTES. It will interfere with your limited working memory and you will learn less in the lecture. Rather come with questions from your pre study and if you need the notes write non linear notes such as concept maps or mind maps. Alternatively, you are better of recording the lecture while paying attention without the distractions of note writing.
