Ever wonder if it's possible to REALLY stay clean living in a van? Think maybe that hygiene in a van isn't possible? What with periods, finding a place to shower, and more, being a female living in a van is admittedly difficult. But I'm going to show you my hacks for those big questions you might have to make sure I'm a clean green machine even while living in a van down by the river! (hehe)

The fact you wear white leggings on your period is amazing! You’ve reach a whole new level of period master. If there was black belts you’d have one

I have a few points. •I love you. •Pee funnel straight to the ground is ignorant. It is public urination and not sanitary. The pee funnel should go to your gray water. No question. Ours is routed to the gray water and it doesn’t increase the amount of times we have to drain the gray water. Please, help us all and route the pee funnel to a holding tank to be dumped at a later time in stead of a Walmart parking lot or across our windshields on the Interstate. Thanks in advance, Your fellow Vanlifers (and everyone else)
@thematneys
@thematneys 6 жыл бұрын
Haha appreciate your thoughts. That's why I said we don't use it usually on concrete (I think I left that in the video?). It's more great for when we're parking on gravel or in nature, etc. Never thought about having it route to our grey water - have you ever struggled with the smell?
@adriennetwenty-seven3018
@adriennetwenty-seven3018 6 жыл бұрын
Minimal Millennials No smell at all. We also flush the funnel line with cleaner and a little water. 😊 I get a little worked up with this issue. Seen too many Vanlifers show their systems (both gray water and other) without the strict disclaimer that they don’t dump just anywhere. You did state you are conscience of the surroundings when using it. I just wanted to be sure that all the viewers understand the responsibility of it all. ❤️

I initially agreed with you, Adrienne, but then I started thinking of all the men who pee wherever they want (a little hyperbolic, but you get my point) along the sides of roads/parks/parking lots.... I think the pee funnel is a great idea as long as it's used respectfully and not where people would potentially be walking any time soon.

eh, having your pee going into your grey water makes it black water right? Pee bucket and dump it at the toilets is what we do.

Something that has made my period so much more enjoyable in a van is pairing my diva cup with period underwear! Catches all the sneaky leaks and so easy to not have to worry about overnight! I currently use modibodi!

They are much cheaper and more sustainable than pads/tampons! I only bought two pairs of modibodi's underwear so I use one pair for a whole day, wash that pair and put on the other pair while it's drying. I am able to switch back and forth between those two through my whole cycle which lasts about a week. It's truly a life changer.

I like you guys but your urine disposal method bothers me. You can't say you guys aren't the types to go the extra mile to do it right: you converted a van into a home and live in it... that's the very definition of "We don't half ass it." Vanlifers have a hard enough time fighting the stigma of the life. Refusing to dump waste properly adds fodder to what the detractors say. Route that tube to a gallon jug that has a cup of water and a few healthy spritzes of an organic cleaning solution sprayed into it. That it should manage the smell. A vacuum-sealing wine-bottle stopper that could be repurposed to close off the pee bottle (essentially an attachment between your tube and the bottle will close it off so you don't smell it). Then dispose of the contents properly.

As for pits, I make my own all natural deodorant, obliviously it’s not antiperspirant soooo with my deodorant I have a small spray bottle of ACV that I put on real quick pre-deodorant IF I’m not putting deodorant on right after the shower, works really well to cut through the little bit of bacteria that might be there just so it doesn’t manifest through my deodorant :). I live in my van as well and have a pretty similar shower/gym set up as you guys do, plus it motivates me to go to the gym more because I’m there every other day or so anyway!

Sorry, I have to add my 2 cents! If you love the idea of going natural, grab a natural sea sponge from a home supply store. Cut it into rounded chunks, dampen it to soften, and use that in place of a diva cup! You still have to rinse, but it can be washed with feminine wash and thrown away after a time. Game changer!

Having to drive around desperately searching for a filthy truck stop restroom whenever I need to take a pee, especially while on my period, ESPECIALLY in a state with a ridiculously high level of humidity even when it’s cold out, is my idea of a literal nightmare, so props to you for somehow being OK with it. What a trooper! Wish I were that low-maintenance. Btw, since you are so open about this stuff, I was curious why you made a point of surreptitiously concealing a hygiene product in your clothes on your way to the washroom? As long as some women act like we are weird human-doll hybrids who have no body functions, others will end up feeling like they have to do the same. Let’s not be ashamed of whatever we plan to do on the toilet and stop acting like we’re just going to stand there and giggle. Periods are just another normal, natural, totally socially acceptable part of being a person born with a vagina! While I’m not saying you have to run around free-bleeding, I still think you should always be proud of yourself for being the living, breathing miracle that is a human who can still grow other humans.

I’ve never quite understood why people don’t build a toilet and shower in a converted van - especially if you have a large/long wheelbased van like a Sprinter (yes I do know they also come in none long wheelbase). Why haven’t you made a toilet and shower - even a composting toilet would do.
@thematneys
@thematneys 6 жыл бұрын
We definitely thought about it, but in such a small space, EVERYTHING is close to your food. So we just didn't feel comfortable with the cleanliness of having a toilet in our build. We might one day add an enclosed area with a shower and toilet, but that would mean we'd need to carry more water, etc. It's just more of a hassle.

She was seriously gifted as she could piss with perfect accuracy into a small plastic butter dish and then seal it with a lid. She would do this in the middle of the night out of a dead sleep in the dark. She would also do it in the moving van going down the road and never spill a drop lol. If we re-did our build, I definitely might think about it. The only thing that keeps us from it is the maintenance required. Not only would we need to keep it extra clean (as it would be close to all of our food and sleeping area), but we'd have to carry a LOT more water which would be added weight. Good luck on your build! And I'm glad you enjoyed the video :)

I saw a van build where they had a fold-up kiddie pool that they put on the floor and a few hooks on the ceiling for the shower curtain. The kitchen sink faucet had a long hose attached and they used that to shower with, just hung it over the curtain. Such a simple idea and easy to keep clean. Wouldn't take up any floor space since you only pull it out when you need it. Wouldn't be too expensive to implement if you wanted to.

How often do you shower? What if there isn't a PF near by? I saw Bec say that they don't necessarily shower everyday... so I'm wondering about those of us with greasier skin who MUST shower on the daily? Love your content. Planning a Southern Utah canyon hiking trip in a campervan that I am so stoked about!

We definitely don't shower every day - I would say probably 2 or 3 times a week. Christian used to be one of those people who needed to shower every day, but once he moved into the van and was forced out of that habit, he found that he no longer needed to! I've found that over-washing anything - skin, hair, etc. - can make our bodies over-produce oils. So it's a bit of a transition to stop showering every day, but I do think it's possible for any human body to get into a new rhythm!

Thnks for the great video. I live in Cape Town South Africa and we currently experience water shortage. And trust me...we get by with showering 3 times a week max. If need be we do a bucket body wash. Works great for everyone👍👍

I follow many van/bus dwellers on YT and it is extremely obvious which ones take hygiene more serious than others. Greasy, un-kept hair is absolutely disgusting and you can only imagine what they smell like and their van/bus smells like. Yuk!

Haha sometimes people are just more comfortable that way! We try to stay as clean as we can both in hygiene and in our home but sometimes getting out into (dirty) nature keeps us a little bit more grounded :)

I think it also has a lot to do with the way people are raised. I've taken in many, many troubled youth of all shapes, sizes, color and race into my house to raise for a period of time and it is obvious which ones were raised with hygiene as more of a priority. Different strokes...

Why didn’t you post this on your personal channel?

It was an epic debate between the two of us, haha. But honestly my channel is a lower priority and with Christian working fulltime, I only have so much time to make videos, and since I wanted to make this video, I decided to put it here haha.

Why do you need to rinse your divacup every time you need to pee? I just empty mine in the morning and in the evening and it works perfectly :D Love your videos so much! I’m usually a silent viewer but I’ve watched all of your videos. Have a beautiful day.

I have a heavier flow than average. For two days of my period, I need to empty it probably 2-3 times per day. I know, horrible, haha.

I applaud your candid moments for sure, but... How do you rinse that Diva Cup out? In a public restroom sink that someone may come behind you and wash their hands? I just hope you take some sanitary measures since you couldn’t picture it for us to see. Benefit of the doubt right here...🙏🏻

Colleen Mercer Rinsing a diva cup in a public single-stall restroom is no different than doing it in your own bathroom sink. At home I make sure I rinse the sink out after I put my cup back in, and in public restrooms it's the same thing. People don't wash their hands by rubbing them all over the sink, so as long as everything has been rinsed down, it's as sanitary and safe as a public restroom can get!

We definitely thought about it hard! We just didn't want to have a toilet unless it was in an enclosed area for cleanliness, and our layout decision didn't really allow for that. Plus, after living on the road for a year, we knew that we'd be okay!
