PSYCHO - STUART PEARCE - FOOTBALL STORIES • PSYCHO | STUART PEARCE...
Brian Howard Clough, OBE 21 March 1935 -- 20 September 2004 was an English footballer and football manager.
As a player Clough was a prolific goalscorer with Middlesbrough and Sunderland, scoring 251 league goals from 274 starts. He also won two England caps, both in 1959. Clough retired from playing at the age of 29, after sustaining anterior cruciate ligament damage. He remains one of the Football League's highest goalscorers.
In 1965, Clough took the manager's job at Fourth Division Hartlepools United and appointed Peter Taylor as his assistant, the start of an enduring partnership that would bring them success at numerous clubs over the next two decades. In 1967 the duo moved on to Second Division Derby County. In 1968--69, Derby were promoted as Second Division champions. Three years later, Derby were crowned champions of England for the first time in the club's history. In 1973 they reached the semi-finals of the European Cup. However, by this point Clough's relationship with chairman Sam Longson had deteriorated, and he and Taylor resigned.
This was followed by an eight-month spell in charge of Third Division Brighton & Hove Albion, before Clough returned north in the summer of 1974 to become manager of Leeds United -- a surprise appointment given his previous outspoken criticism of the Leeds players and their manager Don Revie. He was sacked after 44 days in the job.
Within months Clough had joined Second Division Nottingham Forest, re-uniting with Taylor in 1976. In 1977, Forest were promoted to the top flight and the following season won the league title (the first in the club's history), making Clough one of four managers to have won the English league with two different clubs. Forest also won two consecutive European Cups (in 1979 and 1980) and two League Cups (1978 and 1979) before Taylor retired in 1982. Clough stayed on as Forest manager for another decade and won two more League Cups (1989 and 1990), but could not emulate his earlier successes. Forest were relegated from the Premier League in 1993, after which Clough retired from football.
Charismatic, outspoken and often controversial, Clough is considered one of the great managers of the English game. His achievements with Derby and Forest, two struggling provincial clubs with little prior history of success, are rated amongst the greatest in football history.His teams were also noted for playing attractive football and for their good sportsmanship.Despite applying several times and being a popular choice for the job, he was never appointed England manager, and has been dubbed the "greatest manager England never had".

I met Brian Clough at Old Trafford during a reserves game. I was scared, he had that reputation of clipping fans around the head but my dad was adamant I go and ask for his autograph. I was only 9. He didn't only give me his autograph, he sat me next to him and started asking me about my favourite players and talking me through the game - a true gentleman - a true legend. (oh and he agreed that Bryan Robson was a great choice for favourite player)

Bobby Robson was FC Porto's manager for two and a half seasons, winning us two portuguese league titles and one cup. And he achieved all of this playing an entertaining attacking football never seen before or since. He's the right man to introduce us to another legendary manager, the one and only Brian Clough. Nice documentary. Cheers from portugal. RIP both Brian and Bobby.

He is someone I never tire of watching, listening too or reading about, I admire the Man & the story of Brian Clough as a Spurs supporter who grew up during his career as a Manager. There is no doubt he suffered when his dear old pal Peter Taylor died, they may not have spoken for many years but their love for each other was still there for sure, on hearing the sad news of Peters death, Brian wept uncontrollably it is said, I imagine it hit him hard & he would regret he had not spoken again to a dear friend & never will again...

I've been a Manchester United supporter since 1963 and have seen the ups and downs. The one man I wanted to see replace Matt Busby when he retired was Brian Clough. The one man I wanted to see manage England was also Brian Clough. He was call 'old big 'ed' and rightly so, but Cloughie backed up his words always and never pulled a punch. His record with both Derby and Forest stands as a testament to his genius. There will never be another one like him.

Probably not, but Clough did that with almost all of his team. Next documentary would be been about ; Jose Mourinho | The Greatest Manager Portugal Never Had I definitely feel like Portugal football nation team will be regret the same situation as Clough for England as Mourinho never had a chance to try to coaching Portugal after all the job he done with Porto that literally had 80% of homegrown portuguese player to won UCL

So true, if Mourinho was the special one then Cloughie was the extra special one. Would have helped England win a number of big trophies, as would have Jose with Portugal. Relief for Zagalo at last.

Remember all Brian cloughs success stories had a man called Peter Taylor in them,, Taylor told clough not to go to Leeds United and didn't go with him, and just looked what happened, clough was the front man, and was brilliant at all that media stuff, but Taylor was the brains, and advised clough in many things

I am a hard core soccer fan but only for USMNT and a 20 year vet US Army. don't expect anything to get better for my team or country but it would have really made my day to make the WC, Brian Clough always used to make me feel a bit better lol because of his never give up attitude, hope the best English National team in 2018. I've always felt deeply sorry for Brian Clough. I don't think he ever had a moment of peace and contentment in his entire life. No achievement could ever be great enough to fill whatever emotional void he suffered from, to satisfy his desperate need for validation. I think he is the most forlorn, lonely "famous" man I've ever heard of.

WildwoodClaire1 Very interesting analysis indeed. What factors do you believe created the personna you describe. He describes his early family life as being happy, he had a stable marriage and seems to have enjoyed fatherhood. As a footballer he was an achiever. Thanks.

I'm not British but as a die-hard British football league and Man United fan since I was born in the mid-60s I have to admit that Brian Clough was and still is the best football manager ever. I am very confident to say that had he stayed at Derby County they would have won the European Cup and had he became England manager they would have won the World Cup a second time for England. He is by all means the Muhammad Ali and Pele of football managers.

I personally think it was Nottingham Forest, coming from obscurity to win the league, & the European Cup in consecutive year's. Absofuckinlutely amazing, from a Manchester United fan. RIP Brian Clough, genuine genius. 🙏

Cloughie was a great manager, probably the greatest club manager of them all. But I wonder whether he would have made a good national team manager. He was brilliant at taking smaller unfashionable clubs with lesser known players to extraordinary heights. With a bigger club and well-established big-name players, it was a different story. Witness what happened at Leeds United. True, it was a crazy appointment after all his comments about Leeds. And as national manager he would have been dealing almost exclusively with big-name established players.
@andrewphippsphillips1455
@andrewphippsphillips1455 11 ай бұрын
What Brian, Wor Bobby & Lawrie Mac did back then was put "unfashionable" sides like Nottingham Forest, Ipswich Town & Southampton firmly on the footballing map without needing millions (or hundreds of thousands in those days) with the right blend of experience & youth. To a lesser extent, Lyall, Toshack, Taylor & Pleat did similar work with West Ham, Swansea City, Watford & Luton Town but at a far low key level. Nobody could take a team from the second tier & make them European Kings twice in as many seasons within that time frame. Its taken Guardiola billions of investment, several attempts and then buying a massive 6-7foot unstoppable troll to get the one so far. What's more Cloughie always gave you that optimism that you might get to the City Ground and at least nick something, where facing City seems like an inevitability you'll lose, which has taken the fun out of the sport now (its not even sporting when you are up against a 20billion pound starting XI with a low budget) Worst thing about today's game is that he warned people it would be a bad idea to allow a small group to begin moving clear (financially) of the rest & the failed ESL proved that. Now, there are no more Forests, Ipswiches and Southamptons mixing it with the "elites" anymore 😞 At best, you could potentially say Brighton are holding a few teams down but its the same few winning everything now and killing what little interest or optimism there was....
