God I loved this show, I was probably only about 10 as well, I think Channel 4 had only been going a few years, I heard that Gary Olson who played Jimmy had sadly died a while ago, he went on to star in the BBC 1 sitcom drivel 'Two Point Four' kids. 'Prospects' reminded me of 'Minder' except with younger protagonists and I've just discovered it was made by Euston Films who made the classics 'Minder' and 'The Sweeney'. I wish we could have more great shows like this again.

I hadn't heard of this show until last year when I looked into Gary Olsen's filmography, and I watched the whole series on my week off from work for my birthday, it's going to be a birthday tradition I uphold from now on too! Fantastic show and brilliant cast and theme tune too.

I remember seeing the Prospects Album in 'Our Price' records in the late 80's, I wish I had bought it then, can't seem to get it anywhere now and they should release the series on DVD, thanks for posting, Prospects was a very good insight into London life during the 80's, RIP Gary Olsen.

It was made by Euston Films, the film arm of the then London ITV company Thames Television, for Channel 4. The first series was a big success for C4 and repeated on ITV to even bigger success. Thames commissioned a second series, this time to shown on ITV, but at the last minute changed their minds and no more were ever made.

@MistaSid I'm almost certain it was called "Going Out" it was about small rival gangs of lads and lasses who had just left school and were on the dole,killing time and getting up to mischief as we did in those days... Late 70's and/or early 80's at a guess. A couple of the actors went on to things like "The Bill" and cameo roles in "Minder" among other things.

Love of the Common People was not written by Paul Young. He just covered it. Pretty much all of Paul Young's hits were covers. "Common People" was written by John Hurley, who recorded it in the early 70s.

Great theme, and a great show well worth revisiting. You should find cheap unauthorized copies on eBay - no harm, as it won't be repeated or released on DVD, so no one is losing out by you buying an 'illegal' copy.

There was also one called " Going Out" about a bunch of kids just left school and on the dole. One actor went into the bill in later years and one appeared in Minder but thier names escape me ....... It wasn't Mungo Jerry but it was Ray Dorset who is the lead singer and frontman of Mungo Jerry. He did this one with Made In England. But seeing as this post is from two years ago you've probably found that out by now lol.

It was in both. Originally CH4, and repeated on ITV due to it's popularity on CH4, and Thames TV having had a hand in it. Didn't perform as well on ITV, resulting in only one season.
