Bullfrog meant something in the 90s as a Brit. There was a sense of national pride that one of the worlds most beloved game developers was a British studio. My dad was a superfan and bought the original Dungeon Keeper and Theme Hospital on his Windows 95 machine. Timeless games.

Such a great game - really what gaming used to be about.. creative, fun mechanics that just worked to make a gameplay loop that entertained you for hours whilst offering up a challenge if you looked for one. It's very funny that Frimley Park was consulted for Theme Hospital - it looks *exactly* like what a hospital in-game looks like, all boxy and sprawling, and largely on one or two levels. It is the perfect real life equivalent of Theme Hospital.

I played this game like forever when I was a teenager. We got hold of a copy inadvertently and just played that heck out of it and who knew that I would fell in love with it. Fast-forward to now, maybe 20 years or more, as a medical practitioner myself, seeing this and the newer Two Point Hospital...made nostalgia kicked in. I love the simple music and of course when you here "Doctor, attending Psychiatry please" and "Doctor needed in Slack Tongue clinic" XD XD. This game is already a timeless classic for me and still, if you can play this right now, it can still hold on to its own.

@@craigjohnson2301he made a lot of false promises and was outright deceptive about the features and mechanics of some of the games Lionhead were working on in partnership with Microsoft Xbox. The most notorious ones being features to be found in Fable 2 & 3 aswell as the capabilities of the Xbox Kinect and a game that was due to be released specifically for that. It's such a shame really, I think those actions were a death knell for Lionhead and the Fable games at the time, and despite their awesome and unique mechanics and character they were forever tarnished and unjustly judged based off of the actions of Peter, whose behaviour could only be described as that of a politician or snake oil salesman who defined the noughties as a time of disappointment in the games industry (worst of all it primarily affected those of us who had the most faith or were the truest fans of his achievemrnts with Bullfrog and Lionhead, and who caj be considered at the time as "true gamers"), in spite of its growth, innovation and success.

Great thankyou man. I had this on PC in the 90s, and playstation 1. This, dungeon keeper, and jazz jackrabbit 2 always have been, and will remain my 3 favourite games period. I've been gaming as a kid of 8 on my mums 486, and now still as an adult child of 39, on my own killer rig. The music of TH, the PA in it and DK, and massively the music, of jazz jackrabbit 2 have kept a burning nostalgia inside me that reduces me to tears even now..of time gone past, all kind of emotions. I miss Bullfrog massively. And the origianl Epic Mega Games. Sometimes i just want to go back to simpler times. I miss the 90s. I hate the world we world we now live in.. particularly England. Bit depressed and drunk.. sometimes this is all that keeps me going.

Really enjoyed this, nice work! As a big PC gamer in the 90s, I’m surprised I had never heard of nor played Theme Hospital. I think I just lumped it in with Two Point which now makes a lot more sense. 😅 I think the only thing I’d love to see in future videos is a little more visual flair, but regardless, the writing and delivery was still great and kept me hooked. Thanks for putting this together!

Great documentary for a fantastic game! Here's some interesting bits of trivia: Bullfrog originally wanted to have an Alien Invasion disaster which would introduce, according to UK GamesMaster magazine in October 1996: "Fleets of nasties to destroy, maim and pass around nasty rashes to the population". Evidently, this idea was scrapped for time, but the alien patients were kept in and appear during the final level as a Emergency event. There's a bunch of unused staff announcements and graphics relating to the event, suggesting that the aliens would infect your patents with Alien DNA and turn them into aliens that you would need to cure. There was also originally a "disease" called "Pregnant" ("Cause: Power cuts in urban areas. Symptoms: Faddish eating with consequent beer gut. Cure: Baby is removed in Operating Theatre, washed and presented to patient.") which was half-implemented before Bullfrog decided to move away from real-life conditions.

And I didn't play much of Dungeon Keeper, even though it was a great game, my brother loved it though. But I spent many hours on Theme Hospital. The part of the game I hate are the earthquakes that forever mess up your hospital. A hospital wanted a portion of the profits? Who the hell do they think they are? It's a public entity, they shouldn't be allowed to do that. I've got the original box with the green cross, I didn't see the star design until years later and just assumed it was the game + an expansion. Good video, I've subbed, nice work.

Awww yiss! Today the algorithm got the suggestion *exactly* right! Love this game. And I say that in the present tense having played it for 20 years. I'm glad you discussed the difficulty scale. Maybe I'm just getting old, or maybe older games were genuinely harder, but it seems to me like the first 2-3 levels were really easy. By levels 5-6 you're convinced you're losing badly and suddenly the level ends as you inadvertently meet your objectives. And then the last few levels you're a seasoned alcoholic swearing at a pretend hospital game.

The scroll gets stuck and auto-scrolls to one side and stays there. As a result, you have to reload the game in order to fix the problem. But at certain points in the game, the bug returns as soon as you have reloaded. Forcing you to restart the game either from a much earlier savegame or start from scratch.' - Nr.2. 'The door-bug! Every so often, the doors get stuck when there are a lot of people in the corridors or when one person is trying to enter a room while someone else is trying to exit said room. This more often than not makes the room unusable because you can not deconstruct it while there are people in the room. And it becomes a waste of space, having to construct a new room of the same type when space or lack thereof is already an issue.' - Nr.3. 'The earthquake/room-bug! Maybe this is an actual bug or simply a design limitation that they chose to ignore, but if there is some type of equipment in need of repair after an earthquake and the janitor can not reach the specific room/equipment in time. The room in question becomes unusable and a waste of space since there is no way of deconstructing said room if the broken equipment is just a pile of rubble and no longer serviceable. Especially on later levels, this becomes a really annoying issue when space is something that you can't afford to waste.' -----
