Great video. I've been doing brakes for 30+ years. The only suggestion I have is to use a RUBBER MALLET on the centre hub, to make sure it doesn't get dented. Regarding torquing the wheel nuts, the Nissan Micra is 83 ft/lbs, and please make sure you RETORQUE the wheel nuts after 50-100 km.

PSA : rear drum brakes are no joke. I recommend you outsource this job that is generally due at 90K for hard drivers & 125K for gentle drivers. I studied several KZbin videos. I downloaded the service manual. I bought specialty drum brake tools. I was just going to clean & regrease where the pads contact the back plate. Seemed like a straightforward procedure with my KZbin knowledge & couple pages of service manual exploded PDF's. What took 5 minutes on a KZbin toke over an hour on one drum for me ( I've done struts, front brakes, radiator swaps, alternator swaps before, so I'm not a beginner) I studied the picture I took of the ," before ." I after struggling for an hour, I finally reassembled and doubled checked my assembly. Well after taking a short test drive, and not having resistance from my console area parking brake handle, I open the drum again. Turns out, in my 10+ attempts at finessing the springs and position of pads & levers, I discovered that somehow the parking brake cable came off from it's attachment point and got sheared off. So now I created a $350 premature rear brake job for myself. Lesson learned .

A brake service such as this (disassembly, cleaning & adjusting) is often overlooked / not done / not wanted by customers. It can keep things quiet and you can usually spot things (like a missing rotor) that need attention before they affect other brake components.

nic, good vidio, I would put the big spring in first when going back together, than you can put small spring in with out using free driver, also the dust cap comes off better if you use driver between lip and cap and work your way around cap.once when cap gets put back on use small dab of rtv sealer to keep moister out of axle nut area.

I drive a manual 2015 Nissan Micra S 1.6L. About 85,000Km plus mileage The emergency brake lever is getting too high when I pull it up after parking the car. Therefore, it is probably time to replace the rear brake shoes. Replaced the front brake pads summer time last year but now, it is making a metal screeching noise only when I turn right. When I replaced the original front brake pads, the inside surface of the disk brake or brake rotor was rusty on some area and shiny on some area. The outside surface on both left and right disk brakes were shiny. So, I think the rotors need to be replaced plus new front brake pads. Your video is the best out there so far when replacing the rear brake shoes: 1. Torque specification is 90 lb ft for the rear hub nut and is 85 lb ft for the wheel lug nuts; 2. 6-point re-lubrication contact area using Ceramic Extreme; 3. Brake cleaner to clean the inside of the rear backing plate; 4. Safety first: use a jack to secure the car from moving, and tire chuck on the front wheel. I'm a bit embarrass to ask but is it okay to use a Nissan Versa Note hub nut and wheel lug nut torque specs to a Micra. Thx much

From what i hear the micra and note are the same car so the torque specs should be fine.

What I've learned... The hub nut and cap are considered single use only by Nissan... I used a putty knife to wedge one loose (after putting a hole in the other). I used black RTV to seal the puncture. I reused the covers. I didn't adjust the drums well enough and the parking brake doesn't hold well. I've got a neurological condition, my adjustments weren't good. The instruction is to spin it hard and it should only do one rotation before stopping. I'll use blue Loctite on the 30mm hub bolt (out of Loctite's recommended size for use) and reuse the bolt as I've got to open it all back up again and start tightening that adjustable thing with the star wheel again. The hub nut on the 2015 torque is *177 ft lbs*! There are free images of the manual out there but I'm afraid to post the links because of all the Google and KZbin automated strike stuff.. The bleeder valve on the rear is 7mm!!! The front is 11mm if I recall correctly. Stupid a** design! On top of all that it needs to be a thin profile 7 mm. Unlike the one in the front that you can use a standard thickness wrench, this stupid bleeder valve is like for a Barbie car. Miniature. In exchanging the brake fluid, I tried to use a vacuum pump alone but had the best success with a combination of pedal pumping and vacuum. Because the brake fluid reservoir is very hard to get to, I would highly recommend the heavy use of newspaper around the right side of the engine compartment so that no brake fluid drips on something sensitive or on the car's exterior. Might I add that the brake fluid reservoir is also much more opaque than, say a Toyota. It is much harder to tell the level even with illumination from behind. At least with clean fluid. Nissan's design of the rear hub and drum brake system is absolute garbage! I have done tons of drum brakes although the car is in trucks were from the 1990s. This has got to take the cake for the worst engineering. I think they hired Yugoslavian refugees to design it... Sorry, that's an insult to the people that made the Yugo. An engineering monument compared to the Versa Note. Don't forget to Google your year make and model to see if you've been included in the class action lawsuits over the Jatco transmission. Nissan screwed themselves out of at least three car sales from my family alone. If the Note was a better built car, we would be buying more of them. Especially with younger drivers, I would prefer that they drive something new, yet cheaper than say a Prius...

Have you changed the drums on these yet? I had to swap out a bearing and the drums were heavily scored. Those need to be replaced but I'm wondering if the ABS tone ring can be reused since it's marked as "don't reuse" in the factory service manual. Those are dealership only parts and about $100 each so I'm trying to avoid buying them.

@chriswarren16184 жыл бұрын
Thanks fo a very good Video, BUT I wish to point out the following improvements, to make reassembly so much easier: 1.... To remove and replace the Parking Brake Cable, compress the outer 'spring' of the cable to expose the inner, which can be removed/replaced on the brake shoe lever end. You can use you fingers to compress the outer 'spring'. 2. On replacement of the Brake Shoes, your method of engaging the bottom short spring first, does not work. The top spring and Parking Brake Adjuster should be inserted first and this is easy. Locate the brake shoe lugs onto the piston ends. Then it is easy to engage the lower short spring and the brake shoe lower ends into their locations. 3. On the iterative adjustment of the Handbrake adjuster, if you go too far, it is possible to back off the adjuster by temporarily lifting the sprung ratchet piece, located behind the adjustment wheel of the Parking Brake adjuster, with finger or flat screwdriver. 4. The second shoe, spring clip is quite difficult to compress, a film of grease on on pin and spring clip help this process. Ensure the pin is wire brushed and smooth and clean as possible. Takes a few attempts to engage spring clip, but is possible. 5. I recommend a thin film of grease on the shoe lugs, where they locate onto pistons and bottom locations. 6. When the job is complete, remove with liquid soap/rinse/dry, any grease deposits on the brake shoe faces and the 'active' shiny inner surface of the Brake Drum.
