Yes! This is an authentic Greek Salad (Horiatiki). I spent two months backpacking through Greece - mainly the Greek Islands - as a young man and had a lot of horiatiki. I just shake my head when I go to a restaurant in the U.S. and their "Greek Salads" have lettuce and avocado in them. EDIT: I just had this for lunch with pita bread and hummus on the side. Absolutely delicious!

While I agree that authentic is nice its also welcoming when people re-imagine foods otherwise we wouldn't have the variety of restaurants and foods that we do. All cultures take a little bit of another and modify it to their liking and spices. I think the most important take away is to use fresh ingredients and really learn how to use fresh spices. I think we in America have never really appreciated the local farmers markets and specialty shops that create wonderful foods without all of the factory farming.

Agreed. Went to a supposed better Greek Restaurant in Tarpon Springs FL and their Greek Salad was lettuce on top of potato salad plus a few vegetables and dressing.

Many years ago when I was a teenager, I worked at a produce market owned by a Greek and Greek workers. At lunch, they’d prepare a giant Greek salad on huge tin trays. It included tomates , olives , cucumbers, feta, onions - no taking the bite out- what ever for????? vinegar, oil, and slices of French bread. We’d sop the bread into the delicious salad ! Wow. I’ll never forget. Meal fit for a king! BTW…lettuce???

Greeks prefer lettuce as a autonomous salad pairing with fresh onion ,dill weed, vinegar,salt and of course lots of olive oil .....but this is a matter of personal taste so you can try several combinations

Just a tip from a native.....as our grandparents taught us this saying -The skimpy puts the salt (so you can add if you like because you can't take it off afterwards) -The generous puts the olive oil (so you can dive the bread miam miam) -The crazy one mixes it (for very good mixing all the ingredients make the perfect aroma and flavour...do not serve in your plate unless it is mixed Very good) Pairing a perfectly with iced beer /wine Yia mas !

Yum. It’s hot, so dinner tonight! With some crusty bread, I think🤔. I don’t even have to worry about it, your recipes are ALWAYS spot on, always delicious. I just noticed what you do with your onions, I do that too! It really does make them not so strong, and in a salad👍. And of course, in molokia! Update. Great as always. Perfect for hot weather. And I like the big chunks. I wasn’t sure at first, but it works well. And less chopping! Thanks again for your recipes. Next, Harrisa chicken!

I love Traditional Greek salad. Not sure about lettuce though especially at a Mediterranean Restaurant. I’ve made it so many times, but It’s also ok to add or take away food you might like to make it your own. Feta cheese is always a favorite, but I’ve also used different olives and different hood cheeses. I do not like so much oil in my dressing and so I prefer it to have more vinegar. You can add endimines etc…Yum!
@pete9688 Жыл бұрын

I've made this though got (the same) "recipe" elsewhere. It's very good and people will be surprised at how good/easy it is. Btw, I know it's not traditional but I really dislike green pepper, so just use red (though come to think of it yellow might be nicer here for color, it's also less sweet).
