I keep looking up videos of this song and it’s never the same twice. The man finds a new hook each time.

You're so right about this. My favorite will always be his Muppet Show performance of it because I grew up with that one, but it's been so cool to hear all his other recordings.

The main thing I love about this YT channel is discovering performances I never saw. I honestly didn't know Leo Sayer wrote and performed this before Three Dog Night's version. I still love their take on the song, but Leo hit this out of the park- great voice, great theater.

I owned and loved the Three Dog Night version back then and it's still my favorite version. They changed the last line to "I must let the show go on". Leo hated that. Lol.

Silverbird (1973) and Just a Boy (1974) are two of my fave albums of all time. Sensational singer/songwriter styled albums (Sayer and Producer/Pianist David Courtney)

Wow! That is amazing! One: I did not know it was a Leo Sayer song! Two: His version is now my favorite version! This performance and staging must have been mind blowing back then. I really regret that it was broadcast on one of the nights that the little kid version of me failed to stay up past their bedtime! I imagine it would have had a big impact on me.

@ Shortly after posting this I searched out all live performances of this song and was reacquainted with his appearance on the muppets! I must have seen it (likely more than once) over the years and although it doesn’t have the same emotional impact as this midnight Special performance, it’s still great!

He wears the clown costume in both performances. The first time, he was introduced by Dr. Hook. This time, it's George Carlin.

The other performance is in the 50th episode of Midnight Special. Mr. Sugarman isolated that one too, so it's easy to find if you search for it.
