A look at Zoukei-Mura's P-51D Mustang!!! This is a quick out of box review of most of the parts and instructions that come in the kit. We will also take a quick look at the supplemental book that you can also purchase. Lastly, I picked up a set of aftermarket decals for this build from ZM, too!

I have always wanted to build one of these. I once visited Zoukei Mura HQ in Kyoto, and they actually have a V-1650-7 engine on display there. Their staff told me they based their model on it, which really shows how dedicated to detail they are.

@@TheMidwestModelShop They also have a Wright R-1820 rotary engine from a B-17/DC-3, as well as propellers from an Fw190 and a Bf109 on display there. It's definitely worth a visit.

An admitted ZM fanboy here. I've got both 51 kits, because I wanted the earlier fillet less to build Hurry Home Honey of Peterson because I was lucky enough to meet and share a drink with him back in 92 when I was a young 26yo chasing WWII pilots. Built the Ta-152H as well(good kit) and met Walter Loos and Willie Reschke at the same weekend as Peterson. Their Raiden kit is a great build as well, and their F-4 series are great.

Thank you for the excellent review and sharing your own thoughts on the kit. I have the P-51K boxing with the RAF markings ... couldn’t resist the firewall scheme and sharksmouth!

Thanks for showing this. I grew up in Madison and now live in LA, but I was looking at this kit at House of Hobbies in Burbank and was totally amazed by the interior detail. I wanted to see how to expose it since the detail is so amazing.

That laminar Flow wing riveting is superb. Lovely kit.

Tamiya does make a 1/32 Mustang. It is a wonderful kit and has magnets so you can remove the engine cowls.

Is there an ability to use magnets to have various panels removable or can you only make it a static display with panels permanently removed?

It’s too early to say for sure. I just haven’t looked that closely at it. However, if I were to speculate, I would say yes, it is possible. Instead of gluing parts on, figure out where to put magnets and some metal strips for them to stick to.

Could the seams on the canopies be modeling something on the real canopies? Perhaps they were made of two parts.

What were the other P-51 brands that you’d purchased with this one? Were they all 1/32 ?

Did they give it the R.R. Merlin or an Allison?

The book says it’s a Packard V-1650-7 Engine. Designed by Rolls-Royce and licensed to Packard.

@@allanpeters Allison made a V12 for the war effort also. They had them in the Mustang before they changed over to the Merlin. And yes Packard got the contract to build the Merlin engine.
