At 53 with no actual construction experience I’m starting out with a road crew. Ultimately I want to do heavy equipment operation. After 30 years in hospitality management I have no desire to return to that world after the pandemic. I’ve been doing painting and lots of handyman work the past 2 years and really like working in the skilled trades. I’m a little old to start off on the end of a shovel but I’m jumping right in there like I’m 25.

@@meomyo83 thanks for asking. The road crew didn’t pan out. But I’m working with a building supplies/lumberyard company now and it’s going great. I applied all the points from this video and I’m off to a great start. I’ve already been asked to do a lot of things outside the job I was hired for and impressed the bosses/ earned some respect from the crew. I could end up moving up in a small, established family company or stay in the yard, go union and make about the same money. Either way it’s an improvement on what I had.

I got myself into the construction industry as a generic laborer and I can't drive. The good thing is that the job doesn't require me to use a car, but, taking a 3 hour bus ride for 7am and 8am shift can take a toll with light equipment on rainy days. It really is hard work and all is possible to learn more at a low level. I took time off now, to rethink how long I could keep up that endurance because it comes with 7 hours of sleep and 15 hours of activity and 2 wasted hours waiting for buses and having it stopped to pick up other people when I'm scheduled to work. It's all normal aspect of hard work. At this point it's just location distance on bus travel and I really hate far away job sites. It feels a bit like military training, especially getting to work without a vehicle. I must return to work soon. Yikes

Everyone deserves at least enough to do more than just survive. That's a problem that'll ruin what many people think is a great society. Not to mention to make enough to survive, you probably have to work a lot and don't have time for taking classes and training. At some point, businesses will have to suck it up and hire people based on character, not on experience.

Advice: don't be lazy but also don't be a toohardworker. You need to know your limit. I got this advice from a 31yo with 15yrs experience. Also find a job that pays around 20 per hour. I'm making 18 per hour but I'm the rookie since my first week has barely started. They said $24-29 per hr but I'm just an assistant so it's 18. For college I want to go to finance so I guess I would recommend that. I'm 18 so idk if my advice is groundbreaking info haha just trying to help.

If your not 25 yet, you could look into Job Corps for construction trades. It’s a free government funded program for youths 16-24. Also If you live in a big metropolitan city, I would recommend searching for local pre-apprenticeship programs. The classes run anywhere between 4-5weeks to 3 months. Once you complete you should be any to get direct entry into the union of your choice.

I think everyone has ideas and opinions, advice, guidance etc., I'm 62 and still learning, that's why I'm listening to this video, but if you really want to learn the industry you learn it from the foundation up, not from the roof down, perhaps don't listen to me, I don't believe in shortcuts, those that started with a shovel know exactly what I'm talking about, today people don't want to do that, people want to take the shortcut, no matter what you read in any book, It will pale by comparison to field conditions.

Being 16 and trying to get into construction, or anything besides retail or food, is pretty difficult. Most of the construction jobs have liability issues, so they won't hire minors because it's more of a problem if you get injured or something along those lines. I got into it at 17 because my uncle flips houses and he hired me, not a traditional business but a mom and pop business deal. So with that there's no issue of requirements to be hired and etc. I'd suggest asking around to friends and family if there's somebody they know that needs help with there home renovations, small business owners that are like an older family member or friends family. Let me warn you though, it's tough on your body, but Damn is it better than most shit you are offered nowadays.
