Had to chuckle when you said "This means war".....I HATE SQUIRRELS!!! Not enough that they tear up my potted plants, cut limbs for their nests along with chewing pinecones, leaving me with more work to do, but three days ago they chewed up my custom-made car cover, tore a big chunk out of it and chewed the flannel sheet under it. Have seen them, along with mockingbirds eating my tomatoes---I now pick the fruit earlier as you suggested. Always something. Give Dale an extra hug for being and extra good boy.

Western Oregon is turning into a desert with the drought season and I am learning about waffle gardening! In the evening water condenses onto rocks placed around the plant and then the water runs down the rocks and waters the plant. Found out about that accidentally when I noticed that the only plants that did well were either alongside the sidewalk or cement driveway or they had one of those square stepping stones beside them. Every other plant could not retain any moisture during the "no rain" half of the summer.

@@TheMillennialGardener we had torrential rainfall earlier in April and May. Probably the 2nd most I’ve seen since I’ve lived on my farm I bought in 1986. Normally all our grass is brown this time of year. It is very, very rare to see green grass in my sand. That early rain sure helped. Although I have some seedling trees dying. I’ve been so busy rebuilding after the tornado that I’m behind on my normal farm duties. It was the worst Texas tornado since 2015. It took the tops out of every tree in sight at the end of my dead end road.

Great idea to use the green organza bags! Sometimes the birds here have eaten through the white ones I used in previous years. Phoenix area, Zone 9B. I have also put shiny metal objects on my fig tree along with plastic snakes to help scare the birds away. Plus as with you, I often eat figs a day or two early. My Desert King breba crop is almost done, but the autumn crop begins to ripen in October. Looking forward to that. So are my dogs as they love to search for any figs that have fallen on the ground or are on the lower branches. Dale is such a good boy! I could never have trusted my dogs within reach of a steak.

The organza bags aren't 100%. Sometimes, things tear through them. However, they are 80-90%, and I'll take that. I don't mind sharing a little bit of the harvest with nature. When they take all of it from me, that's when I get upset 😅 I try to never eat figs early. Sometimes, I don't have a choice with our rains, but if I have dry weather, I let them hang as long as possible in my humidity. Underripe figs are underwhelming figs. When I cut my figs open, I want to see a pool of jelly. Dale is truly brilliant. He knows right from wrong, he knows what will get him in trouble and what won't...it's almost impossible to describe until you've seen him in action. He is a person. I always say, "We don't have a dog. We have a Dale."

I love that you vacuum the bugs up. I was considering doing that myself the other day. I am surprised you haven't had bird issues prior to now given the # of figs you have. I also am fighting birds. I've been using bird netting since I got my figs and it's fairly effective except when the trees get too big. I've had catbirds getting caught in the netting 3 times now this season. 2 are dead, the third somehow escaped, but thought it would be a goner too. I went around and found any and all gaps and closed them off. I am definitely cutting my figs down much lower this season than I did last season. It's been an absolute NIGHTMARE keeping them properly netted. To top it off, the tree has been aborting figs post-ripening (they start ripening, don't turn the right color and then rot off within a day or two). Some of them have good centers, but most do not. I suspect the hot weather and insufficient water is to blame. Irrigation system coming next week, but it's been stressful!

Sadly, we used to have these issues up here in the PNW. Now, we go from rain nearly every day to no rain for months. We're at the point with climate change where we have to plant things that are drought tolerant. We're on a well here and a couple of years ago, we had to conserve water while neighbors had to drill deeper. We only flushed toilets when it was full of paper or when you did #2. Fires are a constant threat. We can't even mow from late June to when the rains start again. Can't park anywhere there is dry grass or weeds. Can't use anything that will make a spark, and that makes it very difficult to grow anything. Sure, we can water drought tolerant plants until they can survive, but at what cost? Can we flush our toilets? These days we go with "if it's yellow, let it mellow. If it's brown, flush it down." In the PNW, are you kidding me? 20 years ago, it wasn't an issue anywhere other than the historically dry eastern Oregon in the high desert.

Dale really listens! My dog, 1, 2, 3. Well, it you stepped away from the plate, guess it's mine! 😃

we taught our German Shepherd Dog the same thing, and then taught him to 'be gentle'...if you hold a piece of steak in your hand and say 'be gentle', he will come and very gently and slowly nibble the piece of steak our of your hand, great video!

That's the same word we have to use with Dale. Otherwise, he sometimes gets to overzealous he'll take off a piece of your finger 😅 He gets so hyperfocused sometimes, you have to tap him to snap him out of it.

Worked on putting a new fuel line on my mini cultivator this morning, need to rehab a couple of my large raised beds. August first I will do a fall planting of zucchini, cucumbers and lettuce definitely Broccoli probably and the rest or all of the second bed will be garlic around the end of September or early October.

Nice! I hold off on garlic until November here to give it chill. It seems to work well.

I’ve used those little bags this year for my grapes and some large cluster of elderberry to keep the birds away.

Long time lurker but I find your videos have been so informative in helping me further pursue my little container garden here in AZ. I have barely gotten tomatoes and middling potatoes but I'm already eyeing fruit 😂. I see your love for figs and want to take a stab at one but don't know where to start. You have mentioned a few that taste like 'strawberry shortcake'. Is there a strawberry shortcake-like cultivar that you recommend for growing in AZ?

The lead footed bugs destroyed all of my tomatoe garden and started to spread.. i had to get rid of allnof the tomatoes and let the chickens eat some. Thanks for this video telling me why this happened.❤

Wow! Dale seems to have more self control than most adult humans, lol. He's so cute. It's extremely hot here in Southern California Zone 9B. We had a slow start to summer, so the plants took a while to start growing and now the heat is nearly unbearable so some of the plants are suffering because they aren't as big and strong as they should be at this time of the year. We have up a shade cloth, though, and that is helping. I want to start planning out the fall garden, but I can't even think of fall with this weather. 🥵 haha Thank you for these tips.
@patriciamiller19162 ай бұрын
I can't plant seeds as I have no place to put them...sad I know, right now our heat, as yours, will continue well into November. Going to pull tomato plants and cry doing it will amend soil and wait for maybe a few peppers to finish...maybe if the heat doesn't get them first. Love that dog!!!

Wow, Dale really listens. 😊 Yep, I’m planning my fall garden. I also have to start a new zucchini. I didn’t cover my blueberries and the birds ate most of them. I have green figs now. Last year it was so cool that I only got a few ripe ones and the rest stayed green. I hope to get some this year. I’m in Chicago

Dale is so smart. He *always listens,* but he chooses whether or not to obey. He knows 100% what will get him in trouble and what won't, so he constantly casually disobeys when he knows he won't get in trouble. He fully understands he'd be in trouble if he ate our dinner, so he won't do it. He is just brilliant. Green figs are usually less prone to bird damage, but the risk is never zero. Covering them is always a good idea.
