I know you have a small home, but what is you est. sq footage do you have with a basement (do you use a garage or basement or other for storage). I too have a smaller home, but not garage or basement. I have very little storage. I also have an older home so bathrooms and closets are also smaller.

Decluttering is tiring for me. All the choices are mentally and physically tiring. I'm on round one for purging and I'm realizing it will take more rounds to let more of my things go. My goal is to have a simple home by the end of this year. I just love your channel and home, so inspiring!

With you on this one! I set a timer for 15 minutes or give myself a target of 15 items - sometimes I go over, sometimes I don't, but it helps to set a limit so it doesn't feel too overwhelming ❤

It is tiring for most of the people. I heard somewhere that it's like a muscle, you need to exercise, and like with every exercise - it's best to start small, and build up from there. So, first start by something that you are not emotionally attached, something that's easy for you to decide upon... And take your time, it's a process, most of us have been doing it for years step by step, drawer by drawer, box by box... Don't ever be hard on yourself for not doing enough, but remember to be proud of yourself for doing however much you are able to do!

I love to journal. I have old journals that I enjoy looking back in and see where I was, what I dealt with, growth in my life, etc. I journal in bed. I love books and yes, some are older. I read in bed. To me, this is relaxing! I need this. Also, always keep an extra sheet set. You cannot always wash and dry them immediately. For example: our granddaughter took a nap in our bed. She is two and her pull up leaked through on our bedding. We don’t have a dryer to use currently and hang our clothes to dry.

I agree on the sheets, I don't need a spare set for every bed in our house (we are a family of 9) but I do keep a spare set in each bed size for accidents. Same with a few extra blankets.

Our bedroom is literally a bedroom. It's as long as our bed, built on a platform with 6 drawers per side. Closets are on each side. A huge window is in the foot wall bringing in a beautiful scene of the mountains in the distance and stars at night. So our bedroom is definitely a peaceful place. I love that sitting area in your room.

For recipes, I bought 1 blank cookbook. I have had it for years and it’s only about 1/4 full. If I find a recipe that I love and find myself using over and over again and would want to be able to share with others one day I write it in. I know a computer could do the same but I love having that one physical spiral book to pull out. Got rid of all the other cookbooks I had. Don’t miss them at all and my cookbook is now where it belongs, in the kitchen.

You might need a nightstand when you get older. My nightstand drawer holds my bite splint, a few throat lozenges, lip balm, Tums, reading glasses, tissues, one book, a reading light and Alexa who serves as a clock and alarm. Most of this gets stashed in the top drawer.

I agree too! Minimalist isn't just about having LESS, it's about eliminating things that you don't find useful, and therefore don't "need". For me, I only have one nightstand because I have that surface as a place to put my cat's heated bed so it can look out the window, as well as space underneath to hold my books and medications etc. But we didn't need that second nightstand so we eliminated that. So the room is a little bit more open. It's all about whatever works for each of us and it's not about living with the most Spartan number of items in your home so that you look like you don't have anything! It's literally about what works for you and adds value and ease to your life instead of becoming a burden and just living and working around excess things that are in your way. ☺️

I also hate overhead lighting. I have torchieres with metal (opaque) shades so the light is never glaring because it is indirct light which is rreflected off the walls and ceiling (and the special plugs with a clicker to turn each one independently on/off. Also yellow light is very depressing for me so I only use 4500K to 5000K lightbulbs which are a true white light (you can find them now inexpensively at Home Depot and other major stores - just check the K number on the package).

I AGREE! I have practiced "Controlled Purchasing" for many years! Budget wise we put NECCESSITY at the top of our List! We do shop on Amazon, bc the site offers things that we need, but aren't always available in Local Stores! We are both in our middle 70s & have certain dietary & supply needs that are available on that Site! During the Pandemic lockdown, we couldn't get the things we needed, so we began to use Subscribe & Save & have EVERYTHING we use Regularly Delivered every month! We can compare prices & quality & it's easy for us to make good choices to fit our needs! No more running around Town to the different Stores & not being able to find what we need! It's Exhausting! We store the items in our very organized Pantry or Garage! There's a place for everything! Then we buy fresh/frozen foods weekly & bring them home, wash & cut up then store in the refrigerator or freezer! Like you mentioned, we don't have TVs or desk top computers & sleep better for it! Our Home is Peaceful bc we don't have all the Intrusive Noise of the News/Shows from the Outside World! We have Cell Phones only & have all our Books, Movies, Weather, Interesting Shows etc on them! The biggest thing is to Take Control of Our Lives & YES Definately Aim for PEACE!

Taking a picture of the room you want to declutter helps you see what you might want to get rid of or at least relocate. I wanted to upload a photo of my bedroom to try out some new paint colors, and I couldn't believe how cluttered it looked. I thought I had minimal stuff in there. Does the camera add clutter like it adds pounds?

Everything else was cleaned out and donated. All we have is a sitting are with sofa and chair, bed and two small nightstands. Best decision ever! Thanks for raising this topic, Dawn. Totally agree with you on night tables. I have a little shelf for my glasses and phone. My lamp is wall mounted. Our bedroom has very little furniture since we don't spend time there except at nighttime. I don't need a chair, since I don't read or rest there. I have a dresser for clothes, a hanging mirror cabinet that holds jewelry and accessories (now mostly empty). No junk, no clutter -- thanks to following your philosophy.

I’m setting up a new bedroom for me and am concentrating what’s going in there rather than what I’m taking out as I’d completely emptied the room as it used to be a sewing room. Painting it and hanging gorgeous curtains has made it a totally new room. It’s going to be calm, only have what it needs to make me happy and is practical and show my personality. I took out the wardrobe doors and all but 2 shelves so the dresser could go in there and I could have some art above it. ❤

If you have decluttered and really are short a closet or a room to make your house function-our house is small with no basement, tiny attic, no garage, and almost no storage- and you have any yard and your locality allows it, you can make a huge difference with a shed. They are a few thousand dollars to hire done, and check if there are rules to follow for size, height, and base, etc. Do not do it to keep a bunch of stuff you do not use, but if you need a quiet space for work, smelly crafts, or to store camping equipment that simply will not fit in your home but you do use, it is a great option. If you are in an apartment or hoa you will have to double down on minimuzing belongings and making space multitask. An example is after I simplified my clothes and shoes, I was able to store my important document boxes inside my closet instead of stacked on the floor. I do have to have my office in the corner of my small bedroom but it is no longer cluttered. Like Dawn says, stores are for storage for things you might need someday but do not use now. Her tips work for any setup, outbuildings or not.

I decluttered my bedroom a few years ago. It was the best decision to not have any electronics in the room, no books other than my bible, clearing off and placing the dresser in the closet after reducing clothing inventory, clearing off the nightstand of everything but two plants and not storing anything under the bed or anything on the floor. I also reduced my bedding to one set of really good sheets (which I wash and just put back on the bed), a weighted blanket and one comforter. My bedroom is truly a haven when I go to bed now.

We have 7 ppl in 1100 sq ft so our bedroom quickly became the catch all over the last 17 years. We’ve finally decided we are ready to have a peaceful welcoming space and willing to purge purge purge to make it happen! This was very encouraging and insightful.

Got a Helix Dusk through your link for our coastal home. My burly husband loves it! He says he no longer feels like he's being pushed and falling off the bed from the hump in the middle. Thank you! I no longer use the 9 drawer dresser in our bedroom and have moved that contents into a shelf/basket system in my closet so that's about to go to the driveway with a FREE sign on it. Recommendations please for something on that wall so it doesn't look so naked. A large horizontal mirror or leave it blank and learn to become used to that naked peace? BTW, that's a great idea for a video: How to adapt to blank spaces.

I'm moving soon and have decided that the 'master bedroom' will be the smallest bedroom in this 4-bedroom house! It is so small that there is, literally, only enough space on one wall for the bed and two nightstands (definitely need nightstands! Like, where do you put your cup of tea if you can't sleep and you decide to read a book in bed? :-). On the only other available wall will be an antique radio that has been in the family for decades that I can't part with. There is no room for bureaus or other furniture for clothes. And, you know what - I'm fine with that. I have decided that all of my master bedroom furniture will go into the 'true' master bedroom - which will be the guest room - and all my clothes (not much) actually, will be there. I can go upstairs whenever I need clothes - otherwise a few small totes in the closet will be fine for most days (probably use the closet as a linen closet for vacuums and such - which are too big to fit in the true linen closet). None of my guests ever stay long enough to need to put clothes in a bureau (but if they did, I have enough drawers to leave one empty for them). And lastly, I am so looking forward to having that radio as a tv stand! I've never had a tv in the bedroom - so this will be new! I actually hate watching tv - so much so that every time I turn it on it is because I know it will put me to sleep out of sheer boredom. I can zonk out in the recliner in minutes if I put the tv on with a timer set to 30 minutes. :-) So why choose the smallest room in the house for my bedroom? Well, since I only go in there to sleep - why do I need so much room when my eyes are closed 99% of the time that I am there. And secondly, it has a huge window overlooking a lake surrounded by woods - now that's worth waking up to. :-)

It's easier to minimize when you have a home. I live with my son since my husband died and I had multiple heart attacks. I have a large bedroom. That's it. It's nice. It has been necessary to get rid of most of my stuff, but I still have a lot for just one room. It's hard to get down to the bare minimum. There are so many memories attached to so many things. Things from shopping trips with my daughter before she passed away in 2023. Pictures of her and my oldest son, who also passed away in 2023. Things that I remember buying when we were all together. Things I remember wearing when we were together.

We do not have nightstands in our bedroom. Years ago when we used to, the drawers just filled up with junk and the table tops had to constantly be organized and cleared off. The way we have our bed now, no room for nightstands, so we removed them. It has been a number of years, and we never missed them.

We are self employed and had a desk in our room, and I mentioned in my KZbin video (as I moved the desk to our already cluttered master closet) The stacks of paper and work load silently screamed their to do’s at me. It had to go. I also eliminated all under bed storage, for myself and all 5 kids. Slow progress, but I have begun to challenge everything, and be ruthless to the unnecessaries in my life, THANKS TO YOU! Thank you for your inspiration!

We are on our 6th (maybe 7th) year of decluttering. I used the strategy of starting small and holding what was accomplished before advancing to new areas. This way I was always able to feel my efforts weren't wasted (like back in the days of stuff-shuffling). My bedroom is where I started, because I wanted a haven in the chaos. This is especially important when some of the decluttering decision-making started bringing fatigue. I go through every room in my home every year, but now my bedroom takes a few hours at the most. The biggest change is the mind set shift where we declutter as we go along and things don't pile up quite like they used to. Trading stuff for peace is real!!!!

When I go in to take a break, I need to leave my phone in another room so I’m not distracted with phone clutter! 😂 My girls need to watch BC they have decluttered a ton! But are adding too many decorations...making it re-cluttered. They, 14 and 11, have been inspired by you to declutter and it can be hard for me seeing things go. I’m going thru my closet getting rid of more books...and journals. I’m hoping to catch my hubby at the right time to go thru his shoes. Thanks for all you do! I love you!

I'd love to have a bedroom. We moved into a one bedroom mobile home that needed work 2 years ago. Bed is still in living room. I'd love to actually have a dresser. My clothes are tucked away all over the house. It's worse than living out of a suitcase. The ceiling has been replaced now and we are about to close it up but the floor needs to still be done. Husband has taken a job out of town so there's no hope of having a bedroom in sight. So, don't pitty me everyone, instead go and make your sanctuary! Take your space back for me. ❤

Dear Dawn, I could not agree more! We highly simplified our bedroom and it feels so good to enter and have absolutely no to dos waiting for me other than to go to sleep or read a couple of pages from the one book each my husband and i are allowed to have in there. It is so worth protecting the peace of the space and when it comes to stuff trickling in and slowly filling the corners, it is a breeze to kick it all out, because I know what I'm gaining in return!

Live in a one bedroom flat with my toddler. We both have single beds, a huge TV, a shelf and tiny built in closet in an awkward 10 by 10 space. We share the bedroom until hes old enough to need or want his own room then I will be sleeping in the lounge. If I owned this space AND had money, it would look so different. But thats not the case currently. So I will sleep on the floor until we do.

Our built in wardrobe in our bedroom began to grow mould (external walls, poorly insulated house, very cold, wet winter = big mould issue due to cold bridging!) and it forced our hand to literally tear the room apart - something I had wanted to do for a while for aesthetic reasons but it was never top of the priority list… we decided not to put a wardrobe back in the room as three of the four walls in our bedroom are external walls and instead decided to make the room quite literally a bed-room… we decluttered those big wardrobes massively and moved our remaining clothes and shoes etc (less than 15% of what had been in the old wardrobe) into a new free standing wardrobe (on an internal wall!) in our spare bedroom and we also moved our bed side tables into the new wardrobe as small item storage. Now we just have a bed and a small dresser in our bedroom, that’s it! The dresser is where we keep our spare bed linens (we don’t own a tumble dryer so we have to have a spare set as we can’t get them dry in one day here in the north of Europe) and it also provides a flat surface for a small speaker (we love listening to music as we drift off to sleep) and an alarm clock. Above this dresser is a stunning photo canvas my husband took during a very special holiday. It’s my favourite room in our home and it is exactly what Dawn says, a sanctuary full of space and light with zero excess or clutter and I protect this space to ensure it stays like that. I’m now using this as the blue print for the rest of my house as I slowly peel back each layer of the clutter onion. While it was a huge pain to deal with the mould I honestly now think it was a blessing is disguise because we now have the most beautiful calm sanctuary bedroom and our quality of sleep is so much better. I know we are lucky to have a spare bedroom to allow us to do this but I just wanted to share this because I wholeheartedly agree with what Dawn is saying in this video. For reference we did this two years ago, so we’ve had this gorgeous minimal space for a while and I adore it.

I have always run an uncluttered, pared down home. Retired now. We have a buffet in our bedroom. It’s a handy place to store extra bedding we would need during a power outage. Along with emergency lighting and batteries, etc. because we have a pared down home, we have that space for what we know is important but does take up space. There are some things we all should have for emergencies. Keep the phone near you! In an emergency, you will need it! Just don’t pick it up before bed.

I think my bedroom as a place to sleep and relax. I don't put anything there that does not help to sleep or relax. My apartment is small so I decided to keep my linens and extra beddings in my bedroom. I use all of those or my guests uses. I also look that I don't have anything on dresser, so it is easy to clean. I have 1 dresser in my bedroom and 1 ottoman and inside of it I have all blankets (for guests and for winter). I have big pillows on the ottoman and I can sit there and read or look out of window. I have only 3 colors in my bedroom so it it calming. It helps that I think what is the purpose of this room. Everything what goes into the room has to go into the category of that room.

I feel your pain! I've learned not to declutter shared spaces in our home because my husband just buys twice as much new stuff to fill the space, so we end up with even more clutter than before, only its less useful (e.g. I got rid of 5 cookbooks that I did use and he bought 10 new ones that are not the kind of things we cook!) I've found the only solution for us is to have designated areas for his stuff and mine. So in our bedroom, his half of the room looks like a tornado hit it and mine is clutter free and calm - I just try not to look at his side of the room except when I'm cleaning. If you can have a room of your own, even if it's just a tiny boxroom, that's even better - just one spot in the house that you can keep clutter free makes all the difference.

I love your tips and encouragement. May I offer you some? Skip the watering globe. I use disposable watering globes for vacations (ie upcycled beverage bottles), but plant care can also be minimalized: Right soil, right light, correct watering. To water any plant: drench the soil thoroughly then let it dry (the right amount for your plant) before you water again. (And never let it sit in water.) Using a clear pot inside a decorative pot can be helpful, but you have my permission to skip the gadget and just water your plant. 😉

To weigh in on the dresser thing.... I'm terrible at keeping things neatly in drawers unless they are exactly the right depth for the job - everything usually ends up in a tangle. I also have limited space. I've given up in a dresser altogether. I have a sturdy clothes rail with room for shoes at the bottom and use one of those hanging pocket organisers for underwear etc. I put a pair of pants/ bra/pair of socks in each one, socks on one side, pants and bras on the other - everything stays neatly folded and organised. It's weird (maybe a bit 'kindergarten-y') but it works for me! And who's going to know?! 😂 I have all my jewellery, pairs of earrings, watch, and hair ties stored in the same way in a second hanging organiser with tiny pockets. I love it as I can see everything I need and I can't be trusted with open dishes or to use boxes with lids.😆

@roannadavis
@roannadavis 3 ай бұрын
Yes, instead of a wardrobe. I gave up with wardrobes as I can't get a decent one for my budget and the mdf ones seem too flimsy. Also, I'm bad with putting lids on things and remembering to close doors, so I got fed up of walking into them (I guess I'm distractable). The one rack holds all the clothes hung up (no drawers - I just hang extra pjs in sets on a coat hanger) - 1 pocket hanger for underwear and 1 for accessories. Shoes go on the metal rack at the bottom of the rail. The only trick is to get a 'heavy duty' clothes rack. I think mine was a Songmics. It was from Amazon. 👍
