I found your other laundry video shortly after we lost our eight year old son tragically two years ago. I am still doing this system today. It has been a blessing to me to have one more thing in my life simplified. We only have what we need, I do one load of laundry every day, I don't have piles of laundry. I just have simple wicker shelves in the laundry room nothing fancy I toss each persons laundry on a shelf they grab it up and take care of it. I appreciate this system more than you will ever know. Going through something like we did put me in a mental fog for months having this system is a blessing. THANK YOU for touching my life when I really needed it most!

Laundry is my favourite chore. Living in a warm climate my routine is quite different as we do not use the dryer but hang outside on the clothesline. I agree we only have the dirty clothes in the laundry. Routine: I wash first thing in the morning and as I hang the items on the line I have different spots on the line for different family members, which is my first sort. At the end of the day when I remove from the line I then put each person’s like items together (all hubby’s t-shirts come off at the same time). I also fold as I remove from the line. The basket is then full of sorted folded clothing or linen and I walk through the house putting the items away and return the basket to the laundry. I have always found the whole process to be very mindful (before mindfulness was a thing) and the joy of going out in the sunshine, hearing the birds etc. Favourite chore.

Solution for socks: My mother-in-law told me she bought all plain black crew socks for her boys (and picked one single brand) and I adopted this. It was a game changer! Absolutely no sorting because the socks are all identical and they are tossed in a bin 👏👏I used to have a hard time with all of the patterned dress socks my husband wore to work. The patterns were subtle, it was hard to tell navy from black etc., which made sorting a nightmare! This was my biggest laundry whoa LOL There are some white socks, too. But same idea...all one brand, same style, bin method!

I am an empty nester. I have two hampers in my closet...One for dark and one for light clothes. They are on wheels so when one gets full I wheel it to the laundry room and do that load. We've been using this system for years and never lose socks and don't have a huge pile up of laundry. I also have a laundry bag that hangs in my closet for delicate items. It has been a lifesaver. We also do not have many undergarments, so we have to do laundry at least once a week. When the kids were still at home, they started doing their own laundry in middle school and were completely responsible for doing it by high school in preparation for college and beyond. If a soccer uniform didn't get washed, they had to wear it dirty. It taught them how to plan ahead. I did help out from time to time because sometimes life gets crazy and a little help from mom is not so bad occasionally. Thanks Dawn for the encouragement to keep the inventory down. That really does make a difference.

I did the same with my kids. I don’t know exactly when I started them on their own laundry, it’s been so long ago. I’m thinking about 7-8 yrs old. My step daughter came into my life when she was 5 or 6 & she needed some learning & trust time. I do remember though not long after being in the school system, if they can learn & do in school, they can learn & do in the home. They were doing their own laundry early & their bedroom could be trashed all week but come the weekend it was spotless & they did all of that at early ages. Their bathroom soon followed with the silver even left shining. They only needed a few lessons & they were off to the races. Of course it didn’t hurt that the younger wanted to be as old or at least think he was, the older was. One happy mama. 👌

My husband does not like the no-fold idea. He is a perfectionist at heart, and can't stand the thought of unfolded things sitting in the drawers. So, staying on top of the laundry day-by-day is the answer for us. Otherwise we are folding for hours and I'm not doing that anymore! (: Thanks for the awesome tips! Just finished minimizing the kids' clothes and organizing their "future" boxes. It feels good to make the box the bad guy because we are not letting the clothing grow beyond that boundary. I rarely comment on videos - but I've been following you for a few years now. Just wanted to say a huge "thank you!" for your advice with laundry. It was a sore spot in my home management. My husband is gracious and got used to the two of us having a "folding party" as he called it - where we'd fold multiple loads of laundry after the kids went to bed. I didn't have a problem washing or drying - just getting it all folded. Then you come, my internet best friend, and say, "don't fold it." Ding, ding, ding! Light bulb moment. One of my frustrations with folding is that the clothes never stay folded in the kids' drawers. So now I don't fold it. I make sure everything is right side out and make a pile for each kid. They come get their pile and put them away. If they choose to fold, they can. I fold mine and my husband's and put them away - straight from the dryer. Thank you, thank you, thank you! It's such a "small thing" but removed a huge daily stress point from my life.

I was thinking "You don't have a laundry basket??? Whaaat?" 😲😲 I have 3! Then I remembered you just put your washing straight in the dryer after washing. In Australia, especially in warm areas many people don't even own dryers. If you do have one you use it as necessary maybe a few times a year. People who live in apartments will use them if they dont have the hanging space and those in really cold climates but most just hang it out on the line and let the air and sun do their thing! It certainly makes it a longer process but it is what we are all used to doing here. The main thing is to just fold or hang (who has time to iron😂) and put it away straight away once you get it off the line and put the basket away before it gathers stuff. We are a family of 5 and I definitely feel like all I do is laundry but doing a load every day helps. At least our machine is automatic, my mum had a manual machine when I was young and her mum used a hand washing board!

Having less to manage is definitely the KEY! It makes dealing with laundry so much easier. I have to go out to the laundromat to do my laundry. I am a senior with a bad hip, living on the second floor, so I must carry the laundry from home to car to laundromat and back again. I have pared my wardrobe down so that two weeks works perfectly for me. This allows me to have two or three full loads without it being too heavy to carry up and down the stairs.

I like designing small but efficient houses for fun, and my favorite thing I've come up with is to have a larger room with a washer, dryer, and sinks in it, then off the main area are several tiny rooms that are basically stalls: two toilet rooms, a shower room, and a bathtub room.

This video has solidified two points that I have been contemplating regarding laundry. A) cut down on the number of items that can be used each week (especially flannels/wash cloths/face washers) B) not having a set laundry day for the week. Minimizing the number of items will assist me in not over loading the washing machine so clothes etc. might be better washed. I am going to place the extra items i.e. flannels, kitchen t-towels etc. in a storage container in the landing so they are available if I need to replace an item but they are not straining our limited storage space or adding to the weekly laundry.

I am single but still had laundry issues. After working on decluttering, I changed how I do laundry. I used to do laundry on Sunday afternoon or evening whenever I ran out of things to wear. Most of the clean laundry would just get piled on my dresser because I was too tired to deal with it. Things would “go missing” or if I could find what I was looking for it was a wrinkled mess. I now do laundry every week on Saturday mornings. Doing laundry every week makes less laundry, and doing it Saturday morning ensures I have the energy to put the little bit of laundry I do have away. It has been awesome!

Great ideas until you have to use the laundromat vs laundry at home. I have found a system to work but it is not easy no matter when you have to go outside to do laundry vs having the washer/dryer in home. I agree too much inventory and not only capsule wardrobe and how many towels ect do you really need? My husband bless his heart does the laundry once a week and if i have to do it, then it's 2-3 times a week. I also do some hand laundry for special items and do them daily to stay on top of laundry. The best secret I can share is never let it sit in a basket when it comes out of dryer its folded including when at laundrymat, I get it home and put it away! Love to hear other ideas from people who have to do laundry outside the home? love your channel and suggestions....Thanks much

Great tips! The main one is having less clothes and towels. You might consider having your kids wash their own clothes. I waited too long before I had my girls do their own laundry. It was like pulling teeth but finally they were doing their own clothes when in high school junior or senior. I should have had them doing their own laundry in 3rd or 4th grade.

Totally with you on a load a day, wash almost everything together, and fold as little as possible! I don’t have space for a hammer or basket in the laundry room, though (weird laundry room basically a hallway set-up), so I have a hamper in each room. My hack, though, is that I only wash clothes from one hamper/room per day. Kids each have one day a week, three days spread throughout the week for me and my husband. That way, I only have to put clothes away in one room when I’m done, which I am much more likely to do! Love your channel! I’ve been watching you for about a month now and have really enjoyed your videos but THIS one-THIS is the one that has made the biggest difference so far! I have a HUGE laundry room 12x14 and it’s always been full of both dirty and clean laundry, ugh. I watched this video and after washing, folding and putting away mountains of laundry, I started your process. Now I have just two dirty clothes baskets, one for lights and one for darks. Some days just one gets washed and some days both. When the three of us sit down to watch tv together after dinner, the basket comes out, we all fold for 5 minutes and that’s it! Everyone puts their own stuff away in their closet before bed. OMG! Even my 13 year old son says he likes it and it’s easy! Whaaaat??? This has been going on for a week (took me 2 weeks to get the laundry done LOL) and it’s so simple! So, now we notice how many clothes we have and now that all the laundry is done each day, we just don’t need that many...time to go through our closets next!

I am so grateful.I watched this Video!!! This video has helped me change my home!!! I did not adopt your system, but implemented parts of it and thought about where the breakdown was happening in my home, and it only took me about a day to come up with a new system that works for ME! That was about 4 months ago, and my laundry has gotten out of control only once, since then! And even then, having a functional system in place made it relatively quick and easy to recover. I used to only get my laundry "under control" about once a month maybe. I have also gotten behind another couple of times, but behind no longer equals out of control, because in my new system , everything is still in it's place when I am behind, and not all over my house. It helps too, that I had already been decluttering clothes since I had discovered your videos last winter. But even with clothes decluttered, my old laundry habits were not working for me. Before, I used to constantly be upset at myself thinking I wasn't enough to keep up with my laundry no matter how hard I worked. I suppose I used to work for (and fail) my old laundry "system", but now my new system works for me!!!

It’s doable for the rest of us too Melissa, it’s just about building a routine. I tend to put a load in the washing machine as soon as I get home from work and it’s finished washing just after dinner. I then fold and put away the previous day’s load, which is generally dry by then. Last I hang the load I’ve just washed. I don’t own a dryer, but this would still work if you did. I wash a load of towels and a load of sheets on the weekend, so the after work loads are for school clothes, work clothes, sports clothes, etc.

@@kyliemoloney3218 oh I’ve got routines! I’m good!! I’m just saying in general. When I look back over the last several years when I would go straight from work to one or more kids activities and get home to then do dinner, it wasn’t feasible to do laundry daily unless I wanted it to sit in the washing machine overnight. Plus I am a fold directly from the dryer and put away type of person, so laundry sitting around is more stressful to me than anything. I had 4 kids in 27 months that are now teenagers who do their own laundry. And have always worked full time. So trust me, I have always had routines!!! I am speaking from the experience of being, for example, on maternity leave and being home all day everyday. Much easier to get laundry done daily from start to finish when you are steps from the laundry room all day!!

As soon as it's dry I'll hang them. 1 top/sweater on the hanger and a matching pair of shorts/ trousers on the same hanger. I also require mine to wear (if possible, not always with my son haha) to rewear clothes 2 days in a row; so new clothes MWF and then Sunday. This cut down significantly on the amount of dirty. Monday I wash sheets Tuesday I wash all our cleaning cloths, dish towels, and hand towels Wednesday I wash mine and my husband's clothes & and our 1 towel each Thursday I wash my Littles and their 1 towel each Friday my oldest washes her and her sister's clothes and 1 towel each Sat & Sun off (I actually get 3 days off now with my oldest helping!) Yup, I also don't sort by color etc. I wash everything in cold (except I do wash the cleaning cloths in hot). I found Planet detergent (case of 4 for $26, which lasts 3 months). It even works great for when I was doing cloth diapers. I also add 1/2 cup of baking soda (for whitening) and 1/2 cup of vinegar (for softening). I do need a better something for stains; I may need to give OxyClean another try.

You soak them in your bathtub of extremely hot water with one packet for 6-8 hours. Then ring them out and take them to the washer to just do a rinse & spin. Works wonders! And i will love to have an indoor laundry room, ours is outside in the balcony and its the dustiest most grows thing ever, we rent our small apartment so changing it is not an option, but since its getting too small for a family of 5 in a tiny two bedroom apartment... we might be moving in 2021.... depending on the craziness thats going on in the world now... anyways.. love how the boys were shy and happy at the same time. Too cute!! 🥰 have a lovely day! 😘

We did a load a day until it broke and we upgraded to a large capacity. I enjoy the break, even if it’s just a day or two. My kids bring down their own hamper and they are pretty small (4 kids to 14-5). I sort it out and everyone puts away their own. I feels so much better split up. Kids do towels as a group on the weekend. If they don’t put away their clothes, I don’t wash their hamper clothes next round.

Me too.I love laundry and cooking. Don’t like the rest of the housework but would do laundry for everyone..totally uninterested in having no excess linen -I love it and I love to iron it!

I love folding and washing laundry too. Hate ironing, but love the results! Worth time spent.

I love laundry too. I am not big on ironing but we don't have much that has to be ironed anyway. I typically do one or two loads per day vs 1 -2 days of laundry. It makes my life easier that way for now when I can't get much done due to my son doing his school work in the room near our laundry closet.

It’s just me & am 74 but when Flylady said that she no longer folds her underwear.. game changer!!! I just stack them & place neatly in the drawer... sooo easy! I put the freshly washed under what’s already there & DONE!

I totally have two laundry baskets ready to be folded sitting 6 feet from me as I’m watching this! Ohhh, the shame! 🙈😂🙃

Love! Another thing I do is have my husband put his own pile away so it’s less overwhelming for me. We put away our own personal piles and that way everyone is contributing and honestly makes my life so much easier. He comes home and feels like he can tackle it because it’s only half a pile and not having to deal with all my clothing articles, and vice versa. :)

I implemented a rule at our house where clothes that aren’t in the laundry room hamper don’t get washed. I got so tired of carrying a heavy laundry basket from room to room gathering up clothes.

I never gathered clothes. My kids learned early on that if they wanted clean clothes, they had to put their dirty ones in the hamper in the laundry room. Same for my husband.

Shared laundry room in our building. My days are Tuesday and Friday. I wash towels with towels. Clothes with clothes, sorted by colors. I also fold or hang clothes as they come out of the dryer. I take care of my clothes. Never iron because of my system.

We keep the socks in a drawer by our entryway closet too! I have two stories so it works out great. I also recently bought a shoe rack for the entry closet instead of all the shoes dumped in a bin. Each family member gets a shelf and can keep only what shoes fit on it. The rest need to go in their rooms. So far it’s working out well.

Your system is definitely simpler than mine. I learned mine years ago, like 43 years ago, and colors did run etc. I have 3 baskets in the laundry room, a white one, a brown one and a tan one. My children learned at an early age to put white clothes in the white basket, etc. When the basket is full that is what the washer holds, so it is not a matter of deciding if I have enough dark clothes to run a load for example. I am a folder, and a hanger, so as they come out of the dryer I hang the clothes we wear up right away and keep tumbling so the others don't wrinkle. I used to fold the other things as I watched TV, but with a renovation in progress that isn't possible. I fold the rest as I wait for something else to dry or fold it on the bed upstairs.. Our laundry room is on the bottom floor with bedrooms on the top floor, but I get my steps in. I usually do 1 load a day, and sometimes I do all 3 in one day. Either way works, and at the end of the day it is all put away.

I have a dedicated day for laundry. For energy efficiency, I can't justify running the washer and dryer for a few clothes once a day.
@sherbear20164 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I grew up with my mom doing it twice a week, and she had 7 kids. We all knew that laundry days were Monday and Thursday. We all tried to help with it if we weren’t in school. She said the same thing about energy. That it’s much more energy efficient to run several loads in the dryer on one day while it was already heated up. Rather than heat it up every day for just one load. I do laundry just on Monday’s and it works out great! There are just two of us here now.

Use the small load feature on your washer. Hang dry.
