If your water pump develops a leak or a squeaking noise then you need to replace your water pump. Here's how to do that.
Depending on the vehicle, water pumps can last a good long time. But when they fail, they are gone. The symptoms of a bad water pump will be extremely low coolant, high coolant temperature on the coolant gauge, overheating, a screeching noise coming from the engine, and a steady drip of coolant from the underside of the water pump. A big puddle of coolant under the engine is also a sign that your water pump is bad. To replace it, remove any engine accessories or parts that are in your way. Drain the remainder of the coolant out of the radiator and radiator hoses. Begin unbolting the water pump itself. Be sure to have the correct water pump and gaskets on hand with blue engine sealant. Use a combination of blue sealant and the gaskets to get a good drip free seal on the new pump. Reinstall all the parts and accessories you removed in the beginning, top off the coolant, burp the coolant a few times to remove air pockets, and you are ready to go.
