Josh Safdie stated that Connie does love his brother. Connie sees Nick as an extension on himself, much like Josh sees Benny as an extension of himself. One of the most telling moments of the movie is when Connie is walking Nick out, looks at the disabled man, and says "Is that what you think you are?" Because Connie sees Nick as an extension of himself his narcissism won't let him compare Nick to this other man. There is a similar scene when Ray tries to relate to him and Connie outs himself as having a superiority complex. As Josh once put it "Connie is the star of his own world." Connie seems to either be shielding himself from the truth about himself or just is completely incapable of seeing it... until his final scene perhaps?

Thats exactly it. The entire movie is of him trying to do good in his point of view. Its when he locks eyes with the girl when shes being put in the squad car, he reflects on himself the way shes looking at him. Its when he starts to project at Ray is when the audience sees how he is afraid of realizing hes a monster. The death of Ray serves as the final sign that he is incapable of doing good. The squad car scene shows that theres only one way to show that theres good in him, and thats to save his brother by confessing.

I'm curious about what the color hot pink symbolizes in the movie. It's the color of the powder that exploded after the robbery, it's on the sweater that ray is wearing ...it shows up many times and it's even in a subtle way a part of the logo for the movie. When the letters from"good and time" come together it creates a hot pink color for just half a second. I think there is something there. I have theories but I'd love to know what others think

I can’t come up with any particular theory as to why hot pink was such a pertinent and reappearing color, but it definitely played a part in setting the vivid, thrilling nature of the movie. Hot pink, and all the other vibrant colors brought out the potential that lies in New York’s rich deep atmosphere.

Good Time is way better than Uncut Gems. Uncut Gems is over bloated with multiple pointless and over extended scenes like the whole Weeknd subplot. The ending is also weak leaving a bunch of loose ends and feeling forced. They set up certain things like one of his co workers quitting, or one of his kids finding out he’s unfaithful, and they don’t do anything with it. It also doesn’t have the emotional impact of good time. I still like Uncut Gems but Good Time is significantly better.

I’ve finished the movie, and I can confirm that after ray falls off you could see connies guilt and how much he’s ruined peoples life for example if he left him in the hospital he would’ve been alive and if his brother was taking therapy and leading a normal life he would have gotten better, Connie wanted a good life and he had a good intention for his brother but he did it the wrong way, rip ray, he never deserved to die, he should’ve stayed in jail. And I really felt bad for the brother, and Connie, he realizes how much he’s ruined peoples lives including the cop, and it really sucks, overall this movie is a 10/10. Definetly recommend and most of you will cry at the end.

My take on the ending is that Connie and Ray were the same, but Connie didn't want to see that. He was deluding himself along with everyone else. When Ray dies, it's like that illusion of being something greater died with him. It all hits him in the cop car, but it's a bit late by that point lol. I think it's ok to have sympathy for him, you can see the beginning of the pain of realization on his face

This is a great analysis. I think that Connie BELIEVES he really loves his brother, but his actions show the opposite. I think if they would have gotten away and gotten a little house in the woods, Connie would have been horrible to him after awhile. They would have been in physical fights. I think Connie WANTS to love his brother and protect him, but he is too narcissistic and addicted to chaos to be able to stay in a little house in the woods and truly give Nick a good life.

I also think it could be something along the lines of, they didn’t have good parents, Connie wants to try and be a good “parent” to Nicky, but he has no clue what the realities of that would entail. I also think maybe he’s done this before, promised his brother he would save him and ended up making everything worse.

Super great analysis, you made a compelling case and used evidence to back up your claims. I personally fall somewhere in the middle. I for sure agree with you that Connie defiantly manipulated his brother's mental disability for his own personal gain and took for granted his brother. You were right - there is a carelessness in how he just abandons Nick. However, I think Connie's manipulative behavior stems from a fight-for-flight attitude, and that he actually loves his brother. He goes to some pretty insane extremes to try and get Nick back, and I don't think he would do that if he was purely a manipulation tool. I think Connie's sin was selfishness - he disregarded what was good for brother emotionally and mentally and placed his own needs and desires as the priority. I can speak to this experience personally - I have Asperger's and have two parents that love tf out me, but they have defiantly been guilty of manipulating me for their own personal benefit. Thankfully, unlike Connie, they are consistently growing and I am so proud of them. Great video, gonna share this with some friends.

the brother is not receiving "a form of mental health therapy" from a psychologist. he just answers a questionnaire to get categorized. you can't tell if the future treatment would be of help. because this system is deeply flawed too and far from "an environment that is overall healthy".

@@TheMisfitPond fair enough. but i perceived the first scene completely differently. what if nick seems so desperate because he knows exactly what is coming? we don't know if he's been through all of this before. probably since childhood. in different institutions. his condition is not temporarily. i understand your view of connie and basically agree. he endangers his brother and everyone around him. his repertoire in self regulation and problem solving is very narrow and deadly ruthless. and he is surrounded by people, who don't get him and aren't able to oppose him properly.

I can’t figure out how the cops managed to track Connie down in the end. The poor security guard they arrested thinking he was a bum had been force fed enough acid to be out for at least an entire day, and he did not have his wallet or ID for the cops to identify him, let alone find his apartment building-which they’d have no reason to do. Was it the girl? Was she brought back to her grandma’s house, without her grandmas car, and forced to spill the truth of how (and by whom) it got on the other side of town? “They left me alone in the car outside this amusement park. I got out to look at the lights when they turned on, and that’s when the cops pulled me away. One of the guys came out dressed as a security guard and pretended he didn’t know me”. Would that have been interesting enough to the cops for them to go back and investigate the security guard’s quarters? Did they then, upon finding it empty, contact the owners of the park to find out who the real security guard is supposed to be, to be given a name, which they looked up, to find that that person’s appearance matched the fucked up guy they arrested earlier? Did they then find his address and go there to investigate? Where they arrested Connie out front? Sounds like a process that would take a lot longer to complete than the few hours that pass before Connie gets arrested. Also, by then, the police presence is so heavy out front that the audience is meant to see that the cops had finally tracked CONNIE down. And weren’t there to investigate some random, low-priority trespassing/impersonating crook

@linkmeuplink 4 жыл бұрын
This is actually a pretty good question. I was wondering the same thing. I mean, I could imagine that the cops would've been able to investigate all that information but not within one day. I would imagine the most viable way was through the girl spilling the bean on Connie and Ray.
@DelScully
@DelScully 4 жыл бұрын
@@linkmeuplink It'd be pretty simple for the girl to just say how she knew the guy and his "brother" and I'd hope any sound of mind cop would be able to put two and two together, then get ahold of the company that the security guard works for. Another interesting thing to note is what we see in the music video for the Pure and the Damned. I believe the footage in it is from a deleted dream sequence which seems to show Nick and Connie on the farm that they talked about and from the looks of it Nick is finding it hard to cope and Connie seems to be shouting at him as well. Guess it goes to show that even if Connie achieved what he had promised Nick it still wouldn’t be the right place for them.

Great analysis. This film does not get enough praise. GOOD TIME might be funniest movie of 2017. Disguised as a gritty urban crime thriller like The Town or Paul Walker’s Running Scared meets Of Mice and Men, at one point you start to think it’s like a Coen brothers film ie Raising Arizona or Fargo. After many examples Murphy’s Law and “well, it can’t get any worse” moments, you realize it’s a KEYSTONE COMEDY, more Money Pit, Funny Farm, or Adventures in Babysitting. Loved it. Better than Gems.

Yes is the short answer. He does love him. I think Connie sees it as the only pure thing in his messed up life. I'm guessing that because the word pure is emphasized in the song over the last scene. That's where the I am better than you line comes from I think. Connie is a f**k up though, a man who can barely help himself, let alone his special needs brother. Seeing what happens to Ray makes him realise this, which is why he fesses up, takes full responsibility and frees Nick up to attend the care hospital. It's not an ideal life, but it's the best possible life for Nick. He'll be cared for and a life safe from harm, the sort of harm being with Connie will bring him, is the least he deserves.

Ehh, I both agree and disagree. The relationship between Connie and Nick reminded me a lot of Daniel and H.W.'s relationship from There Will Be Blood. Indeed, the relationship between the two is very toxic and destructive, but I found that Connie genuinely loves his brother and it's his only redeeming quality. I mean, for God's sake, the whole movie is about Connie attempting to bust Nick out of jail. Though unlike Daniel, who drives H.W. away and is rather pitiful by the end of There Will Be Blood, Connie selflessly takes responsibility for his actions and allows his brother to go free and has Good Time end in a rather bittersweet way. Much like with Daniel and H.W., Connie genuinely loves Nick, but his bad side often overpowers the good that's within him and creates a very toxic relationship. But that's my take.

I feel like this question misses the point of the movie. Connie is disgusting by how dehumanizing the treatment his brother is being subjected to is. He understands that his brother is handicapped, but he wants for them both to be able to live a life with some autonomy. Had connie looked the other way, he probably would have been able to achieve this for himself. He could have become a manager at a grocery store after some time, joined the military, or learned a trade, but he knew this would mean giving up his brother. It's not that he wants what's safest or most secure for his brother, he wants freedom for his brother because he loves and respects him. The last scene of the movie is the total negation of connie's desire. Nick is in a sterile room with other disabled people, playing a simple game totally mediated by the psychiatric staff. There's no fraternity, no freedom, and the input of the subject is totally inconsequential. If anything, it's taken into consideration for how they can better be managed. On a broader scale, the movie is about how Americans have ceded any control over our workplaces or any of the institutions governing our lives and have become alienated subjects to our rulers. Over the past fourty years we've gutted collective bargaining and are experiencing stagnant wages, skyrocketing rent, and the decline of welfare programs. That results in a massive loss of autonomy and induces a perceived reliance on those who own and manage our workplaces. The only time our desires matter is when we're being sold something. We are no longer brothers fighting for a life with dignity, but subjects being managed

See, this is precisely the reason why I wanted to address this question. I fully appreciate your nuanced take on this question regardless that I disagree with it. Really what makes me fully disregard the notion that Connie “loves and respects” him, is the fact that he manipulates his brother and also makes him serve as an accomplice to a bank robbery. It’s incredibly difficult to make the case that Connie respects and loves him when we see what Connie has done to him. Sure we see Connie do a lot of bad things to try and bail him out the entire film, but the motive is certainly unclear... when we see nick in the psychiatric social program at the end of the film, it’s like hes imprisoned there. It’s just a place he can go to from time to time where he can relate to others and gain a clearer headspace and perspective. It’s certainly therapeutic and there’s nothing wrong with what is going on there.

@@TheMisfitPond it's been a little while since I've seen the movie, but isn't there a scene before the robbery where connie is asking nick why he lets the psychiatrist condescend to him? Connie is impulsive and delusional to think that a single bank robbery could support him and his brother evading from the police forever. And he is manipulating his brother into the robbery, but why would he try to break him out for the rest of the movie if his brother's freedom weren't the most important thing to him? I feel like the Safedies are never trying to argue that connie is right, or even a good brother, but that he's acting on an impulse towards freedom. Everything that follows the robbery is about how impossible it is to wrestle freedom from these policing institutions. And nick's life would be more complicated than just a permanent resident at that psych ward, but would he ever be able to work a job that would allow him to pay rent. NYC rent? His life would still be precarious and totally dependent on the State.
@TheMisfitPond
@TheMisfitPond 4 жыл бұрын
Matthew Adams I think that’s an interesting point about freedom. But Connie asking nick why he lets the psychiatrist condescend is another form of manipulation. Nobody was condescending anybody and Connie wants nick to think that everyone including the system is out to get him and doesn’t care about him which is not really the case. Someone like nick does need help from the system especially when people around him like Connie have been misleading him and manipulating him his whole life. The environment present in the end of the film was perfectly healthy and therapeutic for someone like nick. And like I stated in the video, Connie could’ve just wanted to break him out because he wants nick to continue to have the illusion that everyone hates him and he’s the only one that cares about him so he can continue to manipulate him. Nick has a sense of mental freedom in that social program he’s in at the end of the film

I think Connie loved his brother but showed it in a fucked up way All the stuff he said to him was positive reinforcement to show his brother he (nick) matters and that he (Connie) cares about him However because Connie is crooked as shit. He thinks no one else is worthy of taking care of Nick. That’s why he beefs the shrink and their grandmother Now at the same time it’s possible that he cared about his brother but never loved him. Only saw him as muscle that can be controlled and a fall guy that will always take the heat for Connie. But I disagree with this because of the ending. I don’t believe there’s any way to interpret the shrink’s statement in a way that confirms Connie never had any love for his brother, but there’s definitely leeway on his background When the shrink says “what your brother did was a good thing” shows 1 of 2 things. Either Connie always loved Nick and really wanted to give Nick a good life and thought he was the only one who could do that. Until he failed, realized how many lives he ruined in one night, and realized he’s the fuck up, not Ray Or 2. Connie did love Nick, but most of what he said was manipulative bullshit and he never cared about anything other than his goal, which would in turn benefit Nick, but it was more of a happy outcome Seeing Ray die because of Connie’s fuck ups makes him either go from the good guy doing bad things finally coming clean. Or the bad guy doing bad things for morally questionable reasons finally coming clean Edit. I don’t think Connie is an adrenaline junkie. I don’t think he’s done anything this extreme. I think it’s more likely he’s just an entitled cunt who manipulates people into doing what he wants and this is the only time he’s faced consequences. Overall I still think he cares about Nick. I think there’s way more evidence to show that. But because he thinks he’s better than everyone, he thinks no one is capable of doing right by Nick. And the intro scene is showing exactly that. And taking him along on the robbery is another example of it because he doesn’t trust anyone to take care of Nick

I have mental disabilities so I might be biased but I didint think of the end scene as optimistic at All I need to watch the movie more times to properly analyse & I might be projecting but it felt degrading to me for Nick & everyone else there I felt the same way about the first scene but I think that could be my problem any Would like to know if others thought it was a good/happy or even slightly optimistic ending?

I feel refn would be more stylistic in cinematic shots and cinematography, storys grounded in realism but shot more cinematic, while safdie brothers style mo like droppin you right inside a gritty world , idk i think the way they shoot looks more grim and real like you are on the street with them , while with refn u know ur watching a “film”. While good time and uncut gems feel like were watching these characters in the streets in person.

@@jro713 yes I know what you're saying. Safdie Brothers use the documentary style cinematography, where the editing is very fast paced, and they use the handheld shaky camera, to give the viewer a realistic gritty feel. while Refn uses a more traditional steady camera, where he mostly takes shots from left or right side. which gives the viewer a more cinematic surreal feel.. though it's funny because in his early movies like Pusher or Bleeder, he did used the documentary a lot. it shows that Refn has changed his direction style over the years

Just watched the movie like 10 minutes ago. I think Connie might've admitted that he was the mastermind behind all of it and that his brother is mentally handicapped and was dragged into it so he wouldn't face jail time.

there is a movie similar to this. in the sense its indie, and involves brothers conflicting with each other. its called Jungleland. i really wonder what your take on Stanley Kaminsky would be and if he cares about his brother Lion. the ending was really emotional the same way Good Time's was.

I think Connie is evil and manipulates his brother but I also believe he loves him still if he truly didn’t love him I don’t think he would risk his safety and freedom to help him and in the car I think he realizes that he would have gotten his brother killed if he got him out and starts to realize the monster he truly is

I think Connie was sexually abusing and totally controlling Nick for years and his efforts to keep them "together" were simply gambits to keep that going. Connie is a world class manipulator. I don't see how there's any way that chronic manipulation would stop at his brother. Especially when involves putting him in such precarious situations. Also the symbolism of dogs in the movie comes into play perhaps. There was a scene that was cut where Pattinson was giving a handjob to the big dog in the security guard's apartment. (Sorry if you mention it in the video). Maybe that was supposed to reflect Connie's obsession with not just power and manipulation but also sex abuse. Just a theory.
