Interestingly I’ve gone the other way - having owned an S1000XR since they first came out, I’ve moved to a 1300GS. Loved my XR, but the engine loved to rev and much of the enjoyment came at speeds beyond the legal limit. While the GS can be very quick, it doesn’t need to revved hard to be enjoyed.

"if you're not going to go off road why would you buy a GS?" It's a similar question that those who hate SUVs ask. In reality the GS is a terrible off road bike for all but the most capable riders. Both the GS and XR have always been road bikes - the GS prioritises comfort and two up ability and the XR prioritises performance. They're both great bikes, I look forward to buying a second hand one in 10 years!!

Yes good point and you could go a step further and say why have that instead of an s1000r? (apart from i suspect pillion comfort). I am not a good enough rider to exploit the difference in handling but personally i hate the beak thing. You could buy a decenf 2nd hand s1000 for 6-7k?

You can easily take the GS off-road in Europe and US as there’s many flattish dual-track and un-made roads to have a go at. Probably include Cumbria in that. For the average UK green lane I’d think there are more suitable bikes available.

On the subject of the GS never going off road & consequently the ridicule the GS rider sometimes gets? what about the the sports bike rider with race leathers & the hump backed jacket who never go on the track? The bottom line is you pay for what you like & like what you’ve got, everyone to their own. But I do like the new s1000XR. I test rode one a couple of years ago & the seat was a killer, looks like that’s been sorted out. Great review as always. Thanks.

Rode one of these back to back with the gs in 2022. Overall ergonomics were vaguely similar but don't let the basic physical appearance fool you. The gs has a more relaxed riding position and feels less busy while riding. The additional horse power doesn't mean much to an old gent like me.

I have a 23S 1000 XR never really noticed excessive vibrations. You know you’re right the motorcycle it’s in line for that does rev pretty nicely, but nothing uncomfortable or bothersome on long rides. That in-line for is just amazing. Nothing beats an in-line for for sound and pure enjoyment of the ride is an amazing bike and all the bikes are owned. It’s my favorite.

I completely agree with your observation about in line 4s, and is the reason I bought one, and also have a Z900RS… Now, the original exhaust sound on this S1000XR does not do justice to the engine (thanks Euro 5!!!) so that’s an adjustment needed right away (check pro-race). For long trips, I also recommend changing the visor (check MRA). These small adjustments go a long way in making it an almost perfect bike (there will never be such a thing as a perfect bike 😂)

As someone who considered both bikes I can tell you why I ended up with the 1300GS: -seat height. I have a 31” inseam and with the adaptive ride height and low seat get the GS down to an 800mm seat height. Considerably lower than the XR -weight distribution. The weight on the XR is higher than on the GS, and pulling it off the side stand makes it feel heavier than the GS. -vibrations. It’s still a vibey engine, certainly compared to the smoothness of the GS. -power. I just don’t need more power than the 1300GS, and the extra 25hp are up high in a place where I seldom tend to go. I’ll take the torque. -looks. Sorry, the GS is better looking to my eyes. The small front wheel with the tall bike looks awkward to me. -having said all this is, if I was a sport rider looking for comfort, then the XR would be very appealing. Good review, thank you.

I love the styling of the machine, perfect for me being 6 foot 3 I just feel in proportion with the bike and also very comfortable. I ride a MT09 SP and love the immediate pull when you twist the throttle. Something this bike lacks when I test rode it. You need to properly wind it up before you feel the full power and the theatre of noise which is superb. The GS has the benefit of the torque and having immediate usable power when you need it and also it’s shaft driven which is better for touring.

I test rode the 2023 S1000XR and the 1300GS. Both superb bikes. But I bought the XR. I loved the Jekyll and Hyde character of the bike - calm and civilised low in the RPM and a beast higher up. The GS feels too good. Too polished. It does everything and in a way I felt it was taking away from the riding experience. My dealer called it a bit soulless. With the XR I have to work more. It's not just chain maintenance. Shaft drive removes the bother of rear wheel alignment, which I have found to be a pain in the chopper, on both belt and chain drive motorcycles. Shaft drive deletes all that misery, for a small loss of power through the drivetrain on a vehicle that already is blessed with an excess of power to weight.

What I didn't like was the bike made me feel really hot, the heat seems to flow right up you. It was a a fairly hot day 23C. I did find it a bit vibey maybe that would be more tiresome at longer rides. I found the seat holds your bum different, like on a chair which made it feel more comfortable than it should be as it's so thin. Not sure how this would feel after 2 hours in the saddle. Another great review. There is a lot to like about this bike. For me the GS would be the one I would pick. At 64 the lower center of gravity is a +. The other thing I look for in a touring bike is the range. Most of the riders I know on 1 liter sport touring bikes start looking for a gas station at 150 miles. Having a 200+ range gives more choices when planning my trips. I live in the Western US, and I have done trips where you need at least 200 miles of range. I had the 2020 model before my current one, and indeed, there were more vibrations around 4,000 RPM. These vibrations have vanished from my current bike. In 2023 I was 100% sure to get the M1000XR, but now that the complete specs are out, there are 5 things missing, where each one is a deal breaker to me. If it stops raining (here in Belgium since October 2023), I am going to consider getting the latest S1000XR (M Package) with those nifty new rims and the 200mm tyres.

Great review dude.. must say this is a handsome looking bike.. still a GS for me though if I was in the market an ADV style bike 😊 Pete 👍👍

Give me a GSA with excellent fuel economy and range, shaft drive convenience, torquey power delivery and unobtrusive noise at motorway speeds any day of the week! I’m sure the XR is a great Sunday bike but I’m not convinced it would out trump a GSA on a tour of Europe?? 🤔

It's definitely a better looking bike than the new GS. For touring, wouldn't a twin be better? I'd have a 1200 or 1250GS over this I reckon. Thanks again.

I test ride the last one after owning a s1000r. Expected similiar experience but more comfort. After 5 mins of riding it I took it back. The vibes and the seat were terrible. Sounds like they have sorted it now so not surprised it will get good reviews now

I own an S1000R and wondered if the XR is enough of an improvement to upgrade.

Looks alot like the old Triumph Tiger Sport 1050. Now that was a lovely machine! I'm sure this is too. But an inline4? No thank you. 5000rpm at 70m/h? Makes me stressed! Cheers!

Whilst I like the idea of extra "oomph" would I swap the para/tele lever suspension and shaft drive of my GS? I don't think so.....

Great review as always! I had one of the first ones and sold it fairly quickly after my hand went numb after 50 miles and getting 38mpg !! not good for touring ,glad they seemed to have fixed the vibe thing ., A better choice than the 1300GS which I do NOT like the looks of . Like all BMW's now getting pricey so I've recently ,after 20 years of loyalty, gone away from the brand and gone Yamaha Tracer 9GT+. which I love ,I don't need 170 bhp . I know you love a triple! so could you try to get one to review please Andy, i would be interested in your view as it's changed quite a bit.

I love my current XR. I did think about trading it in for the M1000XR. Then I realized most of the extra power of that shiftcam motor is above 10k which for street use is pretty unusable.....If you plan on keeping your license and staying out of jail that is.

I have a 2020 XR. So for long rides the stock seat sucks, it dug into the back of my legs at the three hour point it was painful. If the seat design is the same that would be a no go.

If you’re an all year round biker, the GS is better because of the shaft drive and telelever. However, if when I come to swap out my RT in a year’s time, the 1300GSA isn’t around, I’m likely to buy a 1250GSA.

Wasn't happy with the clutch on my original S1000XR, cable and none adjustable I believe; hopefully that’s improved on this model. Stuck in huge queue at Silverstone ended up with arm pump😂

Signal lights and brake lights......Look pretty tiny. How are they for being visible in daylight? Got rear ended once. Rather not repeat it. Did you take notice of the fuel consumption. Thinking of range on a tank at reasonable speeds.

Another option to the GS is the RS, people seem to hate on that bike

Excellent review Andy . I don’t think the GS and the XR are in the same catchment area. The XR doesn’t offer the technology the GS has . The range is a lot less on the XR, being a much thirstier beast . A bit of an odd ball bike and residuals reflect this when compared to the GS .

I do quite like the BMW S1000XR... I miss in the line 4 smoothness. I also much prefer the symmetrical front end on this. I'll probably never get one though as I love my GSA telelever and the GSA ride position is relaxed and comfy, even more so with my rises with pullback and the SW Motech lowered pegs. My GSA also has the shaft drive as opposed to the S1000XR chain drive.

What is it with GS owners and shaft drive? It’s heavy (and more unsprung weight), has more driveline lash, sucks up more power than a chain, if it has an issue or fails on a trip you’re screwed and the maintenance on modern chains is next to nothing. There’s a good reason there are so few shaft drive bikes nowadays.

Morning Andy, as much as I love bikes like yourself I also love aviation after spending 43 years in the industry so I'm craving another aviation vid from you. Any chance of doing one or three soon ? 👍🛩

Cracking review, as ever. Tempting, but I fear it would constantly be encouraging me to ride a little beyond my capabilities and, perhaps even the speed limit.
