2018 Yamaha Tracer 900GT Review: Yamaha have taken the already good Tracer 900 and made a number of changes to the bike, seemingly following customer feedback. The GT version of the bike is a more sport touring version of the machine with better screen, uprated suspension, heated grips as standard, a new riding position and TFT screen...but do these changes make it a better bike? I waited two years for this bike to arrive, bought the Raven Black for me it's the best-looking one. Regarding all the negative comments, for the price show me something better, It's light, fast, great touring, & lots of extras that are standard. David newman if you need an electric screen buy a car. You didn't mention that the suspension is fully adjustable, that alone is a 1000 euro upgrade. Some guy mentioned the side panniers didn't take a full face helmet, this bike is for riding not for storing helmets. fill the panniers with camping gear & do what it's designed for. It gives me a big smile every time I ride this bike, hello, isn't that what it's all about. The slight vibration on the pegs reminds me that I'm on a motorbike. Best regards, Frank.

Frank Stocker an electric screen would be ideal for touring. Keep it low in the summer so the wind cools you down and high in winter when it pissing it down and freezing........ wasn't an negative comment. Love the bike, just an idea.

Frank Stocker test rode one today. In US they retail for $12990. Imho this is the best all around motorcycle for the money in any category. Simply amazing. I currently own a FJR and a cb1000r. Looks like the FJR may be getting traded in soon.

Lovely bike but not very pillion friendly when you consider the carrying capacity is 180kg. For what is billed as a touring bike it doesn't leave much room for luggage.

First big run for the 900GT, Bath to RAF Cosford to see the Tornado fly past. Very comfortable, very fast, there and back in seven hours, one stop for fuel, 30minutes at Cosford , see the Tonkas and go home. Very good day! Very good motorcycle.

I had a ride of the same year Tracer 900, but the non-GT version, (in the same beautiful (to my eyes) kind of Singer-Porsche grey colour) and I was surprised by how bad the suspension was, even jumping off a '98 VFR (which aren't exactly known for great suspension). Glad you mentioned it in the review. I hope to have a ride on the GT soon, but I wouldn't even think about buying the non-GT version.

Great review, I have the same bike and have done nearly 3000 miles across Europe last week, amazing machine. Vibration happens around 5000 revs but it doesn't bother me that much to be honest, and yes, that screen is noisy!

Great review as always. Have the test ridden the GT and really wanted to like the bike. The vibes are a deal breaker, I could feel them through the footrest as well as the bars. The bike is good but was underwhelmed coming from a 1200GS which is to be expected. Good value and I am sure they will sell well.

great review as always. I have a 66 plate which I use mainly for commuting. Thinking of upgrading to the GT version. Quick shifter and a more comfortable seat a big bonus. I have been told the handlebars are slightly narrower than my version. Tank size is the same at 18 ltrs though. Mt09 is 14 I think from memory

Road one today they're very good have the essential gadgets and could easily do the Alps, just need slightly taller screen im 6tt. Amazed with the grunt like a twin but spools up quicker cruises well in excess of 70 sits easier at speed than the GS. Quick shifter great away from the lights and tight bends. Brakes spot on front disk totally adequate rear ok. Hmmm nice bike who needs 1200 this thing flys

Thinking of upgrading maybe, to one of these. I have the 2017 Tracer and love it. An absolute pleasure to ride and perfect for New Zealand roads. I was going to mention the tank size, but i see someone already has. I have put the Yamaha grip warmers on mine, so the only thing missing is cruise control! All bikes these days ought to have at least grip warmers and all tourers should include cruise control as standard. Keep up the great reviews.

Bought a tracer 900 GT last week. First bike in over 3 years. Your reviews have helped me enormously over the last 9 months. Just when I thought I'm on top of my game, this comes along and completely messes up all my opinions, resulting in a complete rethink. After a long drought on desirable options in the market, manufacturers seem to have listened intensely to what people want and are in the process of rolling those out. I've been waiting for this review, brilliant as usual. I currently have a 2016 Versys 1k (and a Z900rs but let's forget about that one.ahah) and this bike has really caught my eye as a potential replacement. The only problem I can think of is that's it's more a case of want vs need in my situation.lol cruise control is a + but smaller side bags (can fit a full face each side on the Versys) and no default top box might be a negative

Had mine now in the black colour option about three weeks and love it. I test drove the Tiger Xca and Xrt but also the BMW GSA and opted for this over them all based upon value for money, handling and engine performance for everyday riding. I get the colour schemes are not everyone’s cup of tea but i find them modern looking and eye catching. The screen is however, I have to say, not very good and could be better. Also think a heated seat should have been included. Other than that it’s a brilliant bike that is real value for money....I love it. Adjust the suspension to suit you and it transforms the handling so it’s worth putting the effort in to find your ideal settings!!! Great review by the way!!

Almost went the mt way myself until i found a man to reduce safely the gs's handlebar width. On that note possibly add widest point measurements for those of us that have to negotiate a narrow garden entrance etc? If Yamaha add a shaft drive to this machine i think it would clean up the adventure market,great review as ever.

Great review. I need to point out, though, that you mentioned 3 times the bigger tank. That's incorrect, all Tracers have always had this exact tank: 18L. Nothing has changed on any versions in that respect since its launch in 2015. I know, I've owned a 2015 and just traded for the '18 GT.

Nice review thanks, I like the idea of the sportier ride of the GT and its relatively light weight, but I'm a bit concerned that it may feel cramped with a pillion. love my Super Tenere but there's no getting away from it being a big lump, and a little bit ponderous to ride, but being big it is luxuriously roomy (I'm 6,2") and it takes everything when touring including my wife with ease. You've persuaded me to book a test ride on the GT to check it out.

Another great review TMF. I am looking for a “do it all bike” and this one is on the shortlist. My wife likes to ride pillion and that area of the bike looks like it would meet with approval also. Andy hi, though I have left plenty of comments on your videos (all positive of course), I thought it right to say thanks on this review for all your hard work. You frequently say that there aren't really any poor bikes and we live in a 'golden age' and though it is true, it is also a little frustrating when us ordinary folk are trying to decide by narrow margins. However re-reviewing your Tracer review, you actually subtly identify all of the Tracers pros and cons perfectly. Restricted to a single bike that has to do a bit of everything as comfortably as possible, even with its lack of technology and dodgy quality in places, the Tracer 900GT was the only choice last year for me. The pros have exceeded all expectations and the cons all liveable or fixable for a small number of british pounds. Thanks again and keep up the great work (and yes you can add some more subtle humour like 'mmmm fitness fanatics ... excellent')

Been waiting for this review. I upgraded to the GT from my '15 Tracer and the difference is amazing. The longer swing arm makes a big difference to the handling. The stability of the bike is now spot on. I added some extra's, one which you will appreciate, I went for the heated comfort seat which is just over £350 (a bargain compared to your GS one) and the switch just slots into the spare socket next to the TFT screen so all neat and tidy. The TFT screen is brilliant and the way it switches at night time to all black with white writing is a nice touch. All in all I couldn't be happier. Its a perfect all rounder. I can get to my destination in comfort, unload the panniers and have some serious fun in the twisties when I get there. I don't think anything comes close to the spec for the price.

Thanks again for the nice review, TMF. People used to complain about the older Tracer being uncomfortable. Is this one more comfortable? I appreciate what Yamaha is doing for the market with this bike at a decent price and excellent specs. I'm pretty sure it'll make an excellent tourer. I honestly just so wish Kawasaki would make a bigger version of the Versys 650, though. The bike is really hard to beat in terms of comfort, customisation, low consumption and above all reliability.

Yep, 10 or 15 more HP on the Versys would be just perfect to cruise on the highway at midrange or for the occasional emergency acceleration when loaded with passenger and luggage.

Even though I prefer the triple, I'd be swayed to go with the Suzuki V-Strom 1000 with it's 20 liter fuel tank and better stock wind protection. Thank you TMF for another great review.

Love my 2016 900 tracer... original seat was dire and my "comfort" seat not that much better, have been all over the country on it and into London and back 5 days a week... It is a little on the sportier side for long journeys but cannot fault it with exception of the stock suspension which needs tweaking to get right. It's a bit skitish... Have mine in the best colour, silver and blue wheels lol. Led indicators, comfort seat, few bits and a full akro system.... sounds the bollocks.

All together a very nice review, thorough and informative. The rider is clearly experienced and points out both the pros and cons with solid conclusions. Perhaps, as a helpful suggestion, the rider should compare and contrast this bike to the BMW f900 XR, which in my estimation is it's closest competitor. All in all, a really top-notch review. It’s Blue, not purple! Having done some miles on mine I agree that the screen needs changing. I don’t seem to suffer the vibrations from the handlebars, but do from the foot pegs st higher speeds. Replacing the stock foot pegs with those from the FJR sorted this problem though. Good review, great bike!

Test rode one a couple of months ago, absolutely loved it, a big improvement over the 2017 Tracer 900 I rode last year. Nice that they trimmed down the bar width and those overly bulky hand guards. Sadly the wallet says no.

E.S. Slc After 5 months of ownership the only gripes I have are vibration from the engine through the handlebars, i might change the hand guards for bar end weights, I find the seat isn’t comfy, it’s high at the back and not well padded, the screen is useless. I’ve junked the original stock Dunlop’s for Bridgestone S22’s for some extra confidence. It’s definitely sporty and turns well and the engine is punchy and revvy. The speedo over reads and the fuel gauge seems to go from full to near empty in 10 miles or so. I might change the seat Otherwise I like it I had a Honda Fireblade RR4 before this Yam

Great review. I have had mine for a month and is a great bike. Screen is shocking and will be buying a puig screen on the 1st aug. If I was designing the bike I would have had hard buttons for the grips and the engine modes and traction in the menu.

I took the same exact model code for a test ride 2 weeks ago. All in all it is a terrific motorcycle. Three minor comments..... The signal switch is a bit hard to find while wearing gloves. I found the seat in the low position is a little too firm and tends to push me toward the gas tank. And according to the sticker on the gas tank you need to use a high octane premium fuel.

Personally I'd like to see a full sized electric screen, fairing between the screen and the tank (seems bit messy in that area) with mirrors mounted on the fairing. That would sort out my OCD out. Another great review mate 😎
