Yamaha has taken the wraps off the second motorcycle to bear the Tracer badge in the 2019 Yamaha Tracer 900 GT.
Using the same base chassis and motor as the hugely successful MT-09 range, the Tracer GT gets a whole host of upgrades like fully adjustable front suspension, a TFT dash, taller screen, new rider and passenger seat and footpegs, new side cases, bodywork, heated grips and cruise control, with an MSRP of $12,999.
A correction: In the video, we say the rear footpegs are welded to the subframe. They are actually bolted and can be removed.

Nice to see the concept of "touring" bikes dropping back from the 40-year cc wars that took us to 1000, then 1100, then 1200, 1500, 1800. I can attest to 750cc or even 650cc taking you very smartly all over North America without ever feeling too small.

Nice Ride. Ive had 3 cyl Triumphs for awhile and love 'em. I'll let them sort it out a little more(it seems well sorted already!) and offer a different color. Black sucks for a touring bike, as does purple wheels. The looks of the bike is nice, they got away from the Jetson's look so many bikes have now. That should help it appeal to us older riders.

Nice review. I own a 2017 fj. Great bike, especially since I've added a Sargent seat, taller windshield, GPS, Givi 40 litre top case, frame slider, Clearwater aux light.. I don't like blue wheels, but when It comes time to buy a new bike, I can live with them. There is nothing this bike cannot do well - commute, lane split, twisties, touring. My first post break in ride was from Hollywood, CA to Beaver, Utah. Very comfortable, but I had to eventually swap out the stock seat. Easily cruised at 90 mph. Demoed the FJR but it wasn't for me. Much less torque than the fj, heavier, comfortable to the point where I would be in danger of falling asleep on long rides. But it's still a good bike and has a loyal following.

You know, regular tear drop turn signals have always been the best. They are gorgeous. And regular, man sized mufflers have always been beautiful, and part of the overall look of a motorcycle. The modern styling is level 10 cringe. I can't even express it in words. Kawasaki's bikes have become so ugly, they are actually disgusting. They have the flat, low profile, triangle shaped turn signals, that nobody ever wanted, and they look so wretched, they ruin the entire motorcycle. And then Yamaha with their super tiny headlights. I don't think any man on Earth wants tiny headlights (???). Or tiny mufflers. Do men like tiny mufflers? No. Nobody likes non-symmetrical, blob shaped mufflers. I'm still waiting for the 1999 Yamaha R1 styling to come back again. It will come back... And when it comes back, people will be pissed that they sold their 1999.

Appreciate your solid review and I'm dying to test ride one. Seems silly to buy any new bike without some kind of test ride, but unfortunately, many US Yamaha dealers worry that test rides adds too many miles to their bikes. Catch 22? OBTW I like the blue wheels!

Sometimes there are Yamaha demo days and you can test ride one. I just did that two weeks ago and I was ready to get the bike until my test ride. For some reason I was expecting the bike to have more torque (just like the FZ09) and it wasn't there and yes I tried all three driving modes. So everything about the bike is great except the torque part. Maybe my expectations are high since I currently have the 1290 SuperDuke (that's up for sale) I don't know.

Really good and reliable bike however there are 2 major cost cutting measures by Yamaha. One, stock tires are terrible and I replaced mine with Pilot Road 5 within 100 miles. Two, the chain is very cheap and unlikely to last even 10k miles. Unaware of this flaw I was forced to replace chain and sprockets. Top of the line DID chain with new sprockets will double the life of the original set. Overall an excellent bike with well integrated options like the plug and play heated grips. While the Tracer is likely more comfortable for a pillion rider than a GSXR and Yamaha lowered the pillion pegs this year I'm still not convinced this is a two up motorcycle unless she's an itty bitty thing. My 2C.

Best backdrop to a motorcycle review ever. I've ridden one, it's a great bike. If your tall like me that screen on any setting creates wind noise and buffeting. Would I swop my MT10 for one? Wouldn't be as exciting to ride but I would save a fortune in fuel.

Banditmanuk Is it though? I know the MT10 is 'faster' but my experiences with inline 4's have never been what I would call exciting. Is the cross plane tech on that motor really got that much character? I've ridden the likes of the BMW XR, CB1000R etc and I hated them, too smooth and nothing low down like a triple or a twin. Would you say that the MT10 is a better B road bike then?
@Banditmanuk
@Banditmanuk 6 жыл бұрын
will M I've owned standard inline 4s and I know what your getting at, my Versys 1000 lacked character and low down punch. Had a Multistrada 1200 v twin loads of low down grunt but lumpy (and unreliable) also owned a Speed Triple 1050, great engine. Non of those bikes or the Yam Triple come close to the midrange punch and high rev insanity that is the CP4 crossplane engine. Never owned a bike that lifts the front wheel off the throttle in 3rd and 4th like the MT10.

Hi Ive just purchased a Tracer 900 Gt after test riding loads of bikes and I am very please with the ride and how the bike feels, it was important to me to make sure my wife and I were comfortable riding on the bike as we have hit the dreaded middle age bracket, and this bike seem to fit everything we were looking for, I purchase a 2018 model which was second hand and had 2500 miles on the clock for 8.5k and it had a top box fitted which we were looking for. We love the ride but on our first ride out to Bridlington Uk while turning right at a couple of roundabouts we heard something scrap the floor, after arriving at brid I noticed the main stand or center stand had touch down which alarm me ! I have been riding all my life and have been with my wife since 1989 and I had a GPZ600R and I never touch the main stand on that bike, but I have never touch anything other my boot or foot peg which in my eyes is fine,. Now I know you are going to say I had the rear suspension set too soft or my wife and I are fatties ! but know Ill stop you there No the suspension was set too hard because my wife commented on the ride out was hard and bumpy and NO we are not fatties !!! Im 13 stone and my wife is 10. Anyway I adjusted the preload 2 clicks back for the ride home which seemed to smooth out the ride home for my wife :-) BUT as I turned right across the main road the main stand hit down big time this time and even I saw the sparks !! When I got home I inspected the damage which looked like I have taken the corner of the main stand foot off (I later found that I only scraped off small amount) Now In my head whether I have the suspension set hard or soft I SHOULD NEVER GROUND THE MAIN STAND ON THE FLOOR ! This should be designed to took away neatly under the bike and the first thing that should hit the floor when cornering fast or slow with your pillion on (FAT or Thin) should be the foot peg ! The Tracer 900 GT even comes with extra long points under the foot peg ! I have inspected the main stand design and I can see where I can improve the ride height on this, where the rubber stop hits the bracket when the stand is in the folded up position I can see there is plenty more room for the stand to fold up even further than Yamaha have designed it. So I am going to change the height of the stop bracket on the main stand, Oh by the way I am a Fabricator/welder so this will be easy for me to do, just by reducing the small bracket I can make the bike safer to ride !! This is not just me who has hit the main stand because I have been on Tracer 900 Gt forums and there are other people who have had the same problem who cut the rubber stop down in half to help stop grounding the main stand ! The whole thing is a beautiful masterpiece. Especially the dual headlights. But then there's that "muffler" thingy on the side. Who signs the "final" approval in engineering at these comapnies. Who put the vertical louvers on the ZX-14 that make it look like a 1980's bike? Who decided that slash cut blob shaped mufflers were ok? Who decided that countershaft sensors should determine speed, and always be 7 mph too high? Why do motorcycles not have a rear wheel speed sensor, so you can change your gearing? Why do modern bikes not have an overdrive? Why do modern bikes turn 5,500 rpms at 75mph, when there is absolutely no load on the engine? Why do they keep adding more power, whilst never increasing the final drive gear ratio? The engineers need to chime in NOW, and explain their extreme myopia (negligence).

This one doesn't need Ohlins suspension, unless you're doing track days with it. I test rode one last weekend (they are on the Yamaha demo trucks in the US now *wink wink*) and the suspension felt rock solid leaned over and the ride quality was still excellent not super stiff like the FJ-09 was or the Versys is. Still an Akra exhaust would do wonders for the sound. A remap is no longer needed for throttle response, it is absolutely butter smooth even in A mode, the old jerky throttle is gone (remap might still free up a little power).

Downside is, the lower pannier support is attached to that bracket, so you will need to put the passenger pegs back on when you attach the panniers. Probably not a problem for many. I do plan to get one and will run with the panniers off most of the time. I do hit the passenger pegs with my heels as I ride with the balls of my feet on the pegs, but it is only a minor annoyance and not a deal breaker (there are worse bikes out there for that, the Z900 and Ninja 1k come to mind)

How on earth can Yamaha call this a sport touring bike if you can't use the 3 piece luggage at the same time?!?!?

Mohd Jazme nope sorry. I don’t know of any bike in the sport touring category who’s manufacturer says you can’t use all three FACTORY hard bags in conjunction with one another. Also it’s because it would overload the subframe. Yamaha’s words, not mine. Has nothing to do with aerodynamics.

I have the older version, the fj-09. Any long trip I go on I have all three pieces on mine and I have larger 50l top case. Never had any issue even with a passenger on. Had it at top speed and was as smooth as with no luggage.

STIjojoSTI yes you can, the pegs aren’t quite as comfortable to stand on as an adventure bike due to them not having the wide pegs with the rubber on them. I’m 6’2 and I’m still able stand on it. Hope this helps

So my FJR 1300 has 22 liter bags and they will fit a full faced helmet, I was told you can't fit one in the 900 GT and they are 22 liter capacity, what gives???
@jurgentreue1200
@jurgentreue1200 6 жыл бұрын
It depends which panniers are fitted. I watched a British review of the GT and the panniers wouldn't fit a full face helmet. The pannier lids were flat. The panniers in this review are more like the FJR pannier with the lids being slightly domed and look a bit bigger.
@cyclenews
@cyclenews 6 жыл бұрын
They are quite skinny and long, so even though they have the same capacity, they aren't wide enough for a full-size helmet.
@boo-boo511
@boo-boo511 6 жыл бұрын
They are the same pannier to the FJR but there are different lids available, even for FJR. The larger FJR lid, convex, gives 30 litres. The flatter lid which is used on Tracer gives 20 litres in EU spec. Guess Yamaha think it looks sportier? There may be another reason - the payload of the Tracer is on the low side. Maybe they don't want too much weight on subframe fully loaded?

Sorry but I don't agree. I have had shaft drive and belt drive bikes and the belt drive is better in my opinion. The shaft drive of my Kawasaki leaked at the final drive and the universal joint had to be replaced at the transmission coupling. In 30,000 kms on my belt drive Yamaha no issues whatsoever, not even an adjustment needed.

Shaft drive would make it as heavy as the Tenere and would up the cost making it not so budget friendly anymore. Also it does have a centre stand making chain service a lot easier.

For as long as I can understand, car manufacturers and motorcycle companies alike have advertised models as being 1 year ahead of the year of its actual release. Some of it deals with model liquidation; selling models released as 2019 in 2018 makes the product seem more valuable and more valuable than the previous models. The human philosophy that is intertwined with sales and manufacturing is the root cause. People react differently and therefore purchase differently. Items are advertised as $19.99 rather than $20.00 because that 1 cent difference has a substantial effect on people's valuing of a product. It isn't intended to make sense to the consumer but rather makes sense for the producer.

Love triples but the leg and foot position seem too far back. Maybe just looks that way. I like a more forward position especially for long hauls. Where the hell can u put hwy pegs much less a full engine guard? Frame sliders? Really? Come on This is not a true sport adventure bike. More like a one day trip and home.

Why don't Americans talk about what the wind blast is like without a helmet? I despise a visor on my face unless I'm racing. If i'm cruising, its either half helmet or neither (state depending). Nothing will make me hate a bike more than one that blasts directed air right at my face. ....I was about to trade my Tiger 800 right after I bought it because of the shat windscreen; but then I found out about Madstad - problem solved.
