Fun fact in regards to hops: Slovenia is the world’s leading producer of hops per capita. Annual hops production is 1.2 kg per capita. Czech Republic is second with 0.73 kg per capita. All other countries are far behind. 95% of hops is exported - statistically, every 12th pint of beer worldwide is made of Slovenian hops.

Hey! Love the series, hope to see more soon (made the exact same trip from Maribor to the Austrian border last summer, it was lovely indeed). Concerning the inconsistencies at the borders - the southern Slovenian border is also the outermost border of the Schengen area, which is why the checks and barbed wire are in place (have been for well over four years now - since that migrant wave in late 2015, when we found ourselves at the forefront of those events). The northern border (i.e. between Slovenia and Austria) is in Schengen where thorough checks are no longer deemed necessary. And yep, as has been pointed out before, those crops are indeed hops - they are cultivated all over that part of the country :) Cheers!

A bit cold the coming days with light frost during the night. No riding until all the salt on the roads is washed away by decent rain showers. No, it doesn’t look like the Netherlands; totally different types of houses , streets and trees. I always went to the Alpes in summers for nice walking tours in the mountains. The highest point I ever reached was at the Kleine Matterhorn at 3883m. I can recommend special summer leather clothing with mesh panels for the wind to blow through. Much much cooler than textile clothing with all ventilation zips open. I’ve got a set from Revvit. It also has rain prove liner and zip in vest to keep you warm when needed. White lines with no gaps means forbidden to overtake. The western Alps in France are also very green; the reason is a lot of rain I noticed.
